In Dead Space, players step into the role of engineer Isaac Clarke – an ordinary man on a seemingly routine mission to fix the communications systems aboard a deep space mining ship. He must fight through the dead silence and darkness of deep space to stay alive. [Electronic Arts]

Dead Space is a solid realization of several of our favorite gameplay mechanics in a way that we've only seen in blockbusters like BioShock, Half-Life and Resident Evil 4. Its quality is undeniable and we have no reservation in recommending its potent mix of panic-inducing plotline, furious action and deep customization.

It's easily the best survival horror game since the masterful "Resident Evil 4" and it sets the bar high for graphics, sound, and scares in its respective genre. Dead Space is an artistic nightmare clearly designed for survival horror fans by a passionate and dedicated team of like-minded gamers. Just be sure to play it with the lights on. [Dec 2008, p.90]

Overall, Dead Space is an extraordinary game with tons of shock value and action to whet any fan's appetite for some time, and with a campaign that lasts a steady 10-12 hours, that’s plenty of time to get lost aboard the Ishimura.

Dead Space is most frightening when you’re backed into a corner and fighting for your life in the darkness, and absolutely awe-inspiring during the quiet moments of solitude. From major elements like the HUD-less display and the believably intricate machinery to the simplicity of a forgotten magazine, the attention to detail is absolutely staggering.

This is the most fun I've had being scared in a video game since I first encountered the 'dog scene' in Resident Evil. The game is very pretty, draws you in with it's sound, atmosphere, and story, plays wonderfully, and is diverse enough from chapter to chapter where you feel like you are not playing similar missions (like Assassin's Creed). I can't recommend Dead Space enough; it is already up for my GOTY vote, and with a crowded line up of games coming soon, that is a bold statement.

Dead Space is something as unusual as a modern classic in the horror-genre. Everything from the graphics, the sound, lighting, shadows and environments make up an experience that unrivaled by possibly none in the genre. Dead Space is one of the first games that can actually be called a frightening game. With an intense and intriguing storyline, production values to die for and a great system for character development this is easily one of the best games you'll be able to play this year.

Dead Space is also surprisingly long for a shoot-em up, taking over 10 hours to complete. Although parts of it seemed repetitive (often you’ll find yourself trekking through identical corridor after corridor) the combat sequences were varied and enjoyable thanks to the need for different techniques to get through them.

Dead Space introduces some much-needed new blood into the survival-horror genre, and it does it with style. There are a few minor annoyances and ridiculously hard sequences, but other than that, EA's new franchise is rock solid.

Normally games that borrow a lot of elements from others end up being less than the sum of their parts, but for everything Dead Space borrows it gives something back. The atmosphere is Metroid Prime, and the structure is Resident Evil, but everything else is all its own. The strategic dismemberment, mixture of weapons and supernatural abilities, and relentless intensity make for a game that you’ll be scared to keep playing, but won’t want to stop.

Call it science fiction survival horror, but Dead Space does the genre proud with an engaging story; action that's tense, fast-paced and extremely violent; as well as atmospheric qualities that will get under your skin and make you jump.

The combat is fast and frantic, the interface excellent, the controls responsive, and it provides an overall satisfying experience. While it's fun, though, there isn't much that's memorable about Dead Space. It feels like patchwork that's been slapped together from other franchises, and it lacks a spirit of its own to make it stand out from the pack.

Dead Space ultimately feels like an incredibly polished and varied 6-hour game stretched out to make it twice that long. While I felt like I was repeating the same objectives a few too many times, the combat held up so well that I didn't even mind...too much.

Too much repetition and the occasional dip into unoriginality does make it a grind in places, but the story did just enough to pull us through.

Dead Space has enough new elements to make a memorable experience out of it. The lack of a HUD, the use of telekenetic powers and the original weapons all contribute to that. Even the setting, a spaceship, is done so well that there is enough variety in the environments. The controls could have been a bit more direct, but Dead Space is still a perfect way to have a few scary nights.

Immersion is one of Dead Space’s top specialities and the sound follows suit. Exploring the Ishimura is a pleasure to the ears in a sort of freaky way.

With its mash-up of Event Horizon and the first two Alien movies, Dead Space creates a visceral and haunting experience that verges more on action than on horror. Despite its low replayability and linear story-telling, Dead Space is an excellent example of what an action game should be - a combination of high-adrenaline sequences and innovative design statements, in this case the brilliant user interface and the necromorph monsters.

What it takes from Resident Evil 4 – and it takes covetously – is the clever stuff, the enemies built entirely around your weapon-set, the combat full of upset rhythms and immoral thrills, the unrepentant game-isms, and the vital ability to wrong-foot players at all the right moments. It's a fun, beautiful, and intense alien-zombie game wrapped around a mediocre sci-fi horror center. [Dec 2008, p.70]

A mix that often impresses but rarely surprises. More gory than frightening, more technically adept than substantive, "Dead Space" will find a healthy crossover aud between gamers and horror fans, but won't leave them with a single new idea to ponder besides the release date of the inevitable sequel.

James D. gave it a9:
I have had a difficult and aggravating time with Dead Space, you might tink I would give this a bad review. This is scarier than Resi 4 for sure, of course its dark and dreary, which obviously makes it a perfect environment for these sorts of creatures known as necromorphs. Early on I had a problem with how to use stasis to fix a tram arm thing and all I was given was basic information and then I had a journey from mount doom and back trying to get the objective complete and keep my sanity. Unfortunately I couldn't see any way out of my problem but I love the physics and the horror elements although basic horror conventions are the trend here, it actually is scary. Perhaps Dead Space is one experience I wasn't really cut out for, so I presume that's why I had a hard time with it
mike s gave it a9:
Surpasses Resident Evil in creating a spookily immersive game that has you gripped to the last moment. it has set a new benchmark for survival horror.
Chuck P gave it a10:
Easily the best horror game I have ever played. I remember when doom, resident evil, and silent hill all first came out and were innovators. Dead Space picked up where they left off creating a new standard in horror on a next gen system. This title completely immerses a player into the role of the hero weaving a tale of madness and destruction around a base of mystery and suspense. Play alone with the lights off if you dare...
Viorel O gave it a10:
I played the game on PS3 using a 24 inch screen. The graphics, the camera, the atmosphere, the weapons, the combat and the movement within the game were great… I never used the beacon nor the digital map, but I felt so good to see that I have more options than I really need! The puzzle with the huge asteroid was particularly interesting; I consider that puzzle to be very good, probably the best in the game! The bosses were totally useless and big/dumb but I’m not such a big fan of boss fighting anyway… The minigames were fairly interesting; I spent some great/long time in the firing range... However, I think the zero gravity fly is the greatest achievement in DeadSpace! This is a really work of art, a true poetry of movement in videogaming! First time I flew in 0G I thought I can see Cezanne strokes in the movement trails!!! Incredibly well executed, this fly looks and feels very real… In terms of both mechanic and artistic effect/movement the 0G fly spells perfection! Walking and shooting in space/vacuum was another blast for me -very well done- I was so amazed about it… The sound is really top notch and the SF story behind the game is rock solid (I really enjoyed the game realism, the idea of acting as a futuristic technician came to assist Ishimura). Using the songTwinkle Twinkle Little Star inside a metallic space ship was really a phenomenal good idea! Dead Space is inspired from a bunch of titles (creatures are partly taken from games like The suffering or AVSP2, some digital screens and locations seemed to come from DOOM3, the story and the inventory/upgrade system are in fact from System Shock 2 minus SHODAN, the gameplay suspense is clearly inspired from Alien vs Predator 2- human campaign, stasis is also barrowed and some other elements). However Dead Space really improves everything taken from the original games, thus creating something new and unique by combining oldies (but goldies) titles and concepts. I found a really huge bug on Valor, I lost two hours there trying to find a way out from what I initially thought it is an amazing puzzle but in fact was just a programming bug (I was stuck in a corridor between two locked doors and a voice kept repeating this message: Warning! Catastrophic failure of fuel containment. Evacuate the vessel immediately. I needed a battery to open a door and the battery was not there, when I replayed the level from the beginning the battery finally appeared on the floor…) As a realistic SF-horror-survival game, this game should not be compared with other great/amazing titles like Bioshock or Resident Evil4 (Bioshock is more like a nonrealistic SF story good to be compared with The suffering or Batman Arkham Asylum while RE4 story it is just a Survival-Horror game, nothing really SF about it)! Dead Space should be compared with the older System Shock 2 or with the newer Mass Effect (I think Ishimura can anytime *blend in* as a part of the Mass Effect Universe!). Dead Space is at its core a realistic Science Fiction game that somehow shifts into horror as soon as the first mutated human appears on your screen! After beating the game for the first time, I played some levels in the impossible mode and it was perfect, I felt like a*plasma surgeon* using that awesome plasma cutter… Yet again, I really enjoyed the realism of a SF-Horror game, running around -alone- inside a ghost space ship filled with mutated people! That’s all for now, the good and the bad about Dead Space! In a nutshell, this journey into Ishimura was a memorable 10+ experience for me! The 0G fly is indeed Electronic Art as it should be and last but not least, Dead Space is really a stellar game that no one should miss.
Linus J gave it a10:
What it does, it does great. At times a bit too great. Alone at night, I cant take more than about 15 minutes of this game; it scares the the crap out of you. Should be noted that I play it on a 110" HD screen with a great soundsystem, but if you have a good setup and want to be scared, no game will do it better than this one. Story is good as well as the graphics, sound is awesome, but its the overall atmosphere that makes this game great.
Buck S. gave it a10:
A fantastic game. It took the genre where Resident Evil could not. By making each gun unique and fun to use, along with the ability to strafe while firing... Thank God these guys fixed what Capcom has been doing wrong for so long. No clunky knife either. To me this is the REAL Resident Evil 5. Playing this game in the dark on a big screen is both frightening and exhilarating. The game is much longer than I anticipated. I thought it was about to end 3 different times. The learning curve is not steep, and if you've played RE, you'll get used to it very fast. There's also a feature to highlight which way to go next, which keeps you from aimless wandering. These game is very much in tune to what makes the player's experience. The timing of the scares is perfect. It looks great, sounds great and the story is intriguing. This game is a very well produced piece of art. I rented it and beat it twice. I wish I just bought it instead.
Eric P gave it a5:
Pros: high creep-factor keeps you on edge; slick interface. Cons: unoriginal, repetitive, at times frustrating. Review: Although it's a pretty new game (late 2008), it adds nothing novel to the genre. If you've played similar shooters like Resident Evil 4 (wii), this will feel so familiar that you probably can't muster any interest. Been there, done that. Of course, it is very slick, with solid graphics and neat interface. But the map is so slick it's unusable, forcing you to constantly rely on the "cheater" beacon. The game struggles to create concern for your character or the storyline... it mainly feels like simply a standard zombie shooter. Everything feels highly scripted, and you can never go off-track and improvise at all; there is simply no "intelligence" programmed in. For example, if you're standing on a ledge, you can't just go forward and fall/jump down; you hit an invisible wall and must instead go find the ramp you came up. Considering other games like Bioshock --which you can easily play multiple times without boring of the story or the infinite ways to fight enemies due to the amazingly improvisational programming -- it's amazing Dead Space is so favorably rated. Probably enjoyable if it's your first FPS game. But if you've played Bioshock, you'll have a hard time finding the patience for Dead Space.
