Summary

In the future, rebel space colonies launch a brutal war of independence with a series of coordinated orbital strikes against Earth. The chaotic assault signals the dawn of a new age of combat and the ultimate instrument of warfare is born, the Mobile Suit. Dynasty Warriors: Gundam 2 combines the devastating power of the Mobile Suit, the rich legacy of the Gundam universe and the furious Tactical Action game play of the Dynasty Warriors series. The game thrusts players into incredible battles against legions of enemy Mobile Suits on distant planetary surfaces and in the far reaches of outer space. For the first time, Dynasty Warriors: Gundam 2 lets players engage in melee battles against colossal enemies such as the Psycho Gundam. The massive Psycho Gundam can quickly reconfigure their bodies into titanic mobile fortresses which can move with remarkable speed. However, highly-trained pilots can utilize their own Mobile Suit’s speed, agility, and of course firepower to defeat these deadly juggernauts. Dynasty Warriors: Gundam 2 also includes new stories featuring mecha from the latest Gundam anime, plus mecha from Char’s Counter Attack and more. With mecha parts collected throughout the course of the game, players can adapt a Mobile Suit which can be piloted into combat. [Namco Bandai Games]

If you play through this avalanche of new content and you still don't find yourself warming to KOEI's Warriors series, then you can probably forget about ever doing so, because Gundam Musou 2 is absolutely the best in its class. Here's hoping it won't be quite so criminally overlooked as the first game. [JPN Import]

Dynasty Warriors Gundam 2 is the type of niche game that will be overly-criticized by most and adored by its fans. If you are a card-carrying member of the Gundam army there is no reason not to pick up this ridiculously-stuffed disc full of content.

If you like hack n’ slash gameplay, the game’s many different modes will keep you playing for quite awhile. It’s just too bad this title sticks so firmly to this singular gameplay aspect.

SpazioGames

Dynasty Warriors: Gundam 2 turned out to be a well done product, mostly on the technical side, and a quite entertaining one. The numerous game modes, as well as a plot not particularly inspired but interesting enough, guarantee an enjoyable experience, even if mostly recommended for the anime fun.

DW: Gundam 2 isn't the game-changing sequel it should have been, nor is it as big of a step forward as the first DW: Gundam was two years ago.

I would love to say Dynasty Warriors: Gundam 2 is an improvement over the original, but it's honestly not -- at least not on the level of a numerically graduated title.

Fans of the Gundam franchise will love the idea of piloting their favorite characters, but that's the only audience this game will appeal to.

When it comes to pure Gundam geekery, though, there still isn't anything better than this. [July 2009, p.83]

Meristation

Dynasty Warriors: Gundam 2 is one of the best Koei's massive beat 'em ups ever made, with tons of new content with respect to the original. The new Mission Mode includes hundreds of levels, offering a considerable longevity. Unfortunately, the graphical section of DWG2 is very poor, and online options aren't satisfactory.

Dynasty Warriors: Gundam 2 seems like it barely takes a step forward past its predecessor. In some cases, it even takes a step back.

Worth Playing

I'm actually amazed how much content is in this title, but a wealth of features iced on top of a clunker is not worthy of consideration, not even for Dynasty Warriors or "Gundam" fans.

Dynasty Warriors: Gundam 2 is a repetitive and bland hack 'n slash experience with a thick anime coat of paint.

To me, it's the same old song and dance that we've endured for far too many years now. It's time for a change before you lose even your most diehard of fans.

Despite offering a number of playable mech pilots along with local and online multiplayer modes, the result is an unmotivated rehash that's overdue for an evolution (or extinction).

While it's not impossible to see why this series is so popular, each iteration fails to differentiate itself enough, and its poor gameplay, woeful design and awful sound repeatedly fails to impress. [Issue#176, p.92]

GameShark

As is the case with every title in the franchise, Dynasty Warriors: Gundam 2 doesn't re-invent the wheel. A few minor changes here and there, more than double the playable characters, and a half-hearted attempt at bringing large scale boss fights to the series are the only real changes over the last version.

DW:G2 feels like it was made for fans, but Koei didn’t know which fans to placate: theirs or Gundam fans. It tries to satisfy both but ends up disappointing both.

What Our Users Said

Franky R gave it a10:
Its a great game if your a gundam fan like me and the diferent mobile suits and gundams is good here hoping for a 3 game to come out!!

C J gave it a9:
As a fan of both,i guess my view is a little swayed. It is huge, lots to do,and unlock. It has a great amout of characters, though some more Gundam Wing might have been nice. The upgrades seem to do more than in the other series, and using the right combos, especially on hard,is a challenge. As for the worn out gameplay,Street Fighter 4 is the same game as it has been forever, same moves, with maybe 1 or 2 specials added and better graphics. But people like it because it works. And that would be the same here.

Joe B gave it a7:
Erin S, you obviously haven't even played the game and are basing your rating on disdain for Dynasty Warrior in general. Please stick to rating games that you actually play.

Erin S gave it a0:
The Dynasty Warriors series is so bad, it should be illegal. This game is no exception. I had no idea the voice acting could get MORE annoying than it already was. If you're one of the last few who still think this formula isn't terrible, you are deluded enough to enjoy it. So I guess that's a vote in favor for the series, but against for anyone who has bills to pay.

Matt O gave it an8:
As someone who never purchased a Dynasty Warrior game, I found myself enjoying the first DW: Gundam quite a bit but never purchased it due to rarity of the game. When DW: Gundam 2 was released, I purchased a copy immediately and haven't regretted it one bit. There is something quite fun about going around destroying massive amounts of enemies and taking on Aces and Mobile Armor. People will call it boring and repetative, but I can honestly say the same about FPS games. It's all about personal taste and what you are looking for a game to do. If you are looking for DW: Gundam 2 to reinvent the series, this game is not for you. But if you don't own a DW game and you enjoy the Gundam franchise, I don't think you would be disappointed in purchasing this title.

Dave T gave it an8:
I can't understand why Dynasty Warriors games get such awful reviews. The gameplay is not exactly original and they are basically button mashers but I really enjoy them. DW Gundam 2 has a ton of unlockable content and a lot of new gameplay elements. If you're a Dynasty Warriors fan, you'll find a lot to like about this game.
