(Downloadable Game) Featuring an elegant black and white art design inspired by the works of M.C. Escher, echochrome is a puzzle game unlike any other. With gameplay based on optical illusions, players must utilize five simple laws of perspective to join walkways, hide dangers, and create new paths to reach the "echos," or shadow guides. Once you've mastered the five laws, use them to create your own mind-bending levels to play and share with friends using the custom level editor. Master perspective puzzles based on optical illusions across 56 challenging levels that are exclusive to the PS3 version. [Sony]

As Obi-Wan Kenobi once told me, "Many of the truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view." Good advice when thinking your way through Echochrome's frequently mind stumping, addictive I-think-my-IQ-just-went-up-10-points, levels.

Incredibly distinct and interesting, priced right at $9.99, and is absolutely worthy of much more attention.

I'm a sucker for puzzle games, and there's no doubt that Echochrome is easily one of the best I've ever played.

Echochrome is one of those puzzle titles that doesn't come along very often, but immediately strikes a chord for its unique gameplay and incredible depth.

Although it's a bummer you can't download and saver others' puzzles, for 10 dollars, you're more than getting your money's worth here.

There are times when a level can seem absolutely impossible until something just clicks, and the game's simple approach to delivering it all is infinitely helpful in that regard. Rather than distracting, you're encouraged to sit back and concentrate, and the result is an incredibly original, thoroughly engrossing take on a visual puzzler.

The most refined puzzle-action game on PS3. Hugely addictive. [June 2008, p.72]

Games like Echochrome only come around in a great while, completely devoid of anything controversial, yet full of gameplay and challenge that other games wish they had.

It's certainly mind-bending at times, but also relaxing. With a level editor in tow, there's more than enough here to warrant a purchase.

Ultimately Echochrome is a concept wrapped up in a game - its minimalist design philosophy paired with new mechanics will win it praise from the games-are-art crowd.

It might seem like this review is a long list of complaints, and it is, especially regarding the time limit. But they're an assortment of small annoyances in what's otherwise a splendid puzzle game with a minimalist approach. And the ability to create and share your own mind-bending scenes encourages some homegrown M.C. Escherism.

For every moment of epiphany, wide-eyed with an awareness of a resolution, there's an equal number of blunderingly hapless wins, falling or jumping accidentally to new and advantageous positions. [June 2008, p.89]

Worse for the game's long term prospects, the ability to toss yourself round corners and into awkward spaces is too difficult to master, because even with the ability to change camera rotation speed, precision is difficult to attain.
