Summary
In this epic multiplayer-focused game, players can choose to defend humanity as a part of the Global Defense Force (GDF) or destroy it as a merciless Strogg alien invader. Players battle as one of five unique classes in either the conventionally armed GDF army or the futuristic Strogg invasion force, each outfitted with specialist weapons and combat hardware. In this adrenaline pumping fight for survival, warring forces utilize a variety of different vehicles, deployable structures, and defense systems including quad-bikes, tanks, and alien walkers for epic ground assaults; or helicopters and anti-gravity ships to unleash airborne attacks. Throughout each battle, teams establish bases, deploy defense structures, artillery, radar, and advanced forward-command systems into enemy territory while constructing and demolishing obstacles to speed progress and gain a tactical advantage over the opponent. The graphics are worse, joypads are a poor substitute for keyboard and mouse control, online play is laggier and there aren’t enough people playing. And to rub it all in, you can pick the PC version for a good deal cheaper.

In terms of value alone, it's difficult to recommend Quake Wars. You'll love the giant sandbox filled with such distinct classes, high-tech weaponry, and attack vehicles. But when limited to only 16 players on just 12 maps, the gameplay is one-dimensional.

When you're making a game that's purely designed for online play, you have to make sure the basics are in place, and the frame rate is the fundamental factor in all shooters, but in Quake Wars it's all over the place, which is a shame.

A bit of a disappointment. It’s a great game on the PC that lost some luster thanks to a less than ambitious porting job. Still, it’s a good game, providing you can get over that initial difficulty hump and you have a solid group of friends to play with.

The last disappointing aspect of the game is the full-blown price tag. At $60 I'd expect to get a hell of a lot more than 12 maps and 5 different classes, but that is exactly what you're getting here.

We're disappointed, because Quake Wars could have been a great FPS, but it's one marred with visual issues, some badly realised mechanics and crucial missing menu options that would have gone some way to fixing the issues people clearly seem to be having online.

Should you buy Quake Wars for PS3? Probably not. Should rent it? Maybe, but seeing as how I mentioned there are a slew of better shooters on the platform; make absolutely sure you want to play this before spending any money on it above $15.
