Summary
The Eye of Judgment presents a new style of gameplay where the player brings characters/monsters of fantasy trading cards to life for battle in 3D. Through use of a 3' x 3' board and trading cards - each encrypted with "cybercode", players conquer the field by selecting a card and placing the "cybercode" in front of the next generation camera for their respective character to come to life and battle. Each character has various skillsets, which will determine the outcome of the battle. Players take turns to place cards as they jostle for control of the board; the winner is the first player to capture five of the nine squares. The Eye of Judgment presents the player with more than 30 cards, as well as unique online and offline gameplay. [SCEJ]

Thoroughly engaging. [Nov 2007]
Kombo
Eye of Judgment is unlike anything the gaming world has seen yet. Eye of Judgment is aimed at a specific audience so that doesn't make it for everyone.

Makes use of the pretty interesting technology from the PS Eye. Although it’s essentially a multiplayer experience, it stands out as the most different game in PS3 Xmas catalogue. [Nov 2007]
GameShark
A decent collectible card game that can be picked up by players of all stripes in a relatively short amount of time. The game’s mechanics as they relate to the eye itself can be clunky at times but the overall experience is a lot of fun online, against the game’s AI and especially against friends who want to have a traditional sit down battle.

Somewhat of a niche game, The Eye of Judgment nonetheless makes the whole trading card game genre accessible and graphically entertaining.

As if card games weren’t enough of a niche market, a video game like The Eye of Judgment complicates matters by seeping into an even deeper crack within that crevice. But for what it’s worth, the game is a steal--especially if there’ll be more use to come of the packaged camera in the future.

Those like me that are a sucker for a card game are getting one hell of a deal.

It's not for everyone, but the game is certainly worth eyeing if you've enjoyed collectible card games in the past.

Although there are lots of areas to explore, there is too little to do. You can just swim, feed the fishes, pat your dolphin and stare at the ocean. Though the soundtrack is nice and game has a nice atmosphere, I would call my feeling of the game “bored” rather than “relaxed”. [Jan 2008]
Boomtown
I’m sure it won’t appeal to everyone, but go on, admit it; you kind of want to try it.

The technology works surprisingly well. You can battle your PS3 or online opponents. [Holiday 2007, p.74]
Da Gameboyz
The game is actually an engaging card based battle game that requires a lot of strategy to win. I give a lot of credit to Sony for showing gamers out there how their new peripheral can be used to play good games.

a game made for geeks. Even ignoring the steampunk and fantasy element, the whole process of collecting cards and doing battle with them is incredibly dorky, but to be honest, the game is so much fun to play and after about an hour of futzing around, fairly easy to understand that you'll take any lumps just to find someone to play a game with online.

EOJ's longevity will depend largely on the planned release of new cards (building your own deck is crucial to the fun), but this is a solid start to a potential phenomenon. [Dec 2007, p.110]
GameDaily
The game, while not as deep as something like Konami's Yu-Gi-Oh (thanks to fewer cards), transcends the competition, thanks to the cool technology. You'll still look like a dork playing it, but don't deny The Eye of Judgment's addictive pull.

One for trading cards fans that have large wallets, Eye of Judgment is an entertaining and unique experience, but one that lacks any genuine substance to make it worthwhile for anybody else.

Eye of Judgment will appeal to a very, very select audience, but that audience will get a lot of enjoyment out of the title. I personally had a great time with it, although not everyone in the office had the same reaction.

It's the easiest way to indulge your collectable fantasy penchants and delivers a surprisingly approachable, completely unique PS3 experience. So go geek out.

I’m a big fan of collectable card games, but Eye of Judgment is probably the most fun I’ve had with one since Magic: The Gathering. It’s easy to get into, the games go quickly, and seeing your powerful monsters come to life onscreen to crush a foe is a dream come true for CCG fans.

The game gets a great deal right and brings collectable card games to the casual player, but there are a few things that really hurt it, like the short USB cable and a finicky eye that relies heavily on overhead lighting.
Read Full Review >Video Game Talk
It’s a neat little distraction and cool as a screensaver or distraction for those awkward dinner parties, but when compared to the real thing it’s boring, dull and the limited number of fish available make the cost far outweigh the benefits.

The game definitely passes, but it belongs to a niche favorable to genre-addict gamers.

A gimmick, yes, but a good one. While it lasts it's fun, but it needs more game modes. [Dec 2007, p.72]
Console Monster
If you’re a lover of card battle games, then this title is an absolute must – especially if you have mates to play it with.

Spreading out your map, setting up your PlayStation Eye, and getting your cards ready is a cool addition to the usual card-battle preparations, and in that context, the game is a real winner.

The Eye of Judgment is one of those rare games that breaks out of the typical video game mould. If you’re into strategy, fantasy or CCG’s generally, it’s a game that deserves a look.

The terrible music and pointless battle animation do nothing to help out what is already a well balanced card game.

GameSpy
A surprisingly fun first effort that is well worth looking into if you're a fan of collectible card games.

In short, if you're a big fan of trading card games Eye of Judgment is worth the money. If you're not but you're planning to get a PlayStation Eye anyway, you might as well get a great game into the bargain.

The Eye of Judgment is a game made for a very specific crowd, and may bring in a few new gamers. Just don't go in expecting anything too revolutionary or complex.
A fun little strategy card game that should never have gone collectible . The Playstation Eye addition feels a bit gimmicky, as well. I’d enjoy this title with a complete card set, or even as a tabletop game, but the CCG-meets-clunky-Eye setup is a turnoff.
It is solidly the best card-based game on any platform, but compared to the refined mechanics of its collectible brethren and the fully-fleshed features of its digital brothers, it doesn’t fully grasp the inner nerd - neither the card nor video game player - within us all.
The concept for Eye of Judgment remains brilliant, the game itself (with enough cards) is brilliant, it's just that it's going to cost a lot of money before you can make any proper progress in it. [Issue#159, p.90]
Extreme Gamer
The Eye of Judgement is a unique approach to strategy gaming that successfully merges two form of strategy gaming. Gimmick or not, the Eye of Judgement is an interesting idea that doesn’t fully play out to the mass market.

There's no denying that the technology has serious potential, it's just a shame that the first game to use it ends up being a busted flush. [Dec 2007, p.100]

Not implementing any kind of reward system at all is surely a huge oversight. [Dec 2007, p.133]
Edge Magazine
The virtual interface does little to help players and, if anything, slows the game down as you wait for it to catch up with things that are already evident to players – such as victory, failure and boredom. [Dec 2007, p.89]

aspen titan gave it a9:
This is an incredible game but unfortunately it is left unfinished and requires future sets to balance the existing sets. One of my favorite games on the ps3. The ability to customize and create your own deck(s) makes this game highly replayable for years. I was lucky enough to get in on this game from the start and have all the cards but this may be difficult for new players to buy (and is expensive, but worth it- $600+). If you can though, and like card battle this is a near perfect game apart from the balancing issues which are possible depending on opponent deck creation.
Cameron T gave it a9:
An excellent game, boasts a growing community and great customisation. The ability to unlock more decks will keep you trying to improve, and the expansions don't look like they'll stop coming soon. Plenty of room to grow, however needs a better reward system and more multiplayer interactivity outside of full games.
Chris C. gave it a4:
I didn't care for it at all. I like trading card games but this one was just nothing exciting. I could see the same thing and have more fun by watching really old episodes of Yu-Gi-Oh.
TheBigmac gave it a9:
I bought this game because a certain computer store was closing its doors in my city. They had everything with 20% off so I only paid about 15 bucks, my wife wanted and it included it the PlayStation eye. We were not supposed to open the game until next week since we are replacing our living room tv, and the new unit is being delivered next week. (Right now my living room sports a 14" CRT that I pillaged from the exercise room). Just like I predicted, my wife didn't want to wait until next week to open it and she begged me to do exactly what I didn't want to do: Play a match using our room TV, and placing the cards on top of the bed. I was reluctant but after her beggapalooza I agreed to play just 1 match just so she could try the game since it was a Monday night and I had to work early. We went to sleep at 2 o clock in the morning and today, I'm sitting in my office shopping for booster packs on the internet. That should tell you if this game is any good or not. Only 1 gripe and the reason why I took 1 star off: The resolution SUCKS! I have a 52" 1080p LCD. Ranked amongst the top 4 models currently in the market right now so the problem wasn't the TV. Do a search here on amazon and take a look at the TV reviews(LN-T5271F) you'll conclude the TV was not the issue. All my ps3 and blu ray movies look absolutely pristine over HDMI. Playing the Eye of Judgment and sitting 10 feet away from the TV I COULD NOT READ THE SMALL LETTERS, the ones that tell you why you can't play a certain card in a given move. I checked the box. It advertises 720p. I've been dealing with HD since about 6 years ago and I can tell you. THAT WAS NOT 720p. That was 480p at the most. Besides that little hiccup, this game is cocaine.
Justin H. gave it a9:
Unexpectedly I love this game. I didn't expect to enjoy a trading card game, but the PS3 adds a special icing to the cake. The gimmic of avatars appearing on the cards wears off quite quickly, but the awesome depth of strategy in the core game and variety of tactics makes it a very special game indeed. The graphics and animations are very pretty which really invokes the feeling of being a powerful battle mage summoning creatures to your aid. One warning, this is very much a 2 player and/or online experience....the single player is a waste of time. If you have friends and family, or a decent internet connection this will keep you amused forever, it's a 21st century version of chess.
Chris W. gave it a10:
Awesome game, one of the best i have played so far, revolutionary style of game play for a console.
Real Gambler gave it a9:
Two drawbacks: Cards can be expensive if you want all 110 cards. And a match last about 20 to 30 minutes but could be much longer. Do not start playing if you have something to do in 45 minutes because you may end up being late : ) Otherwise, just a great relaxing games. You'll like it even if you never played this type of card game before. It's nice to be able to find opponents anytime, without going out of the house. You deck is always a work in progress. This game is relatively new, but so far, it's likely the game I spent the most time one already. So cost per hour of game play is really low for me.
