A fantastic game, and definitely what I was hoping for when I first saw those initial screenshots a while back. The capturing mechanic is fun and interesting, while at the same time being tied into familiar third person controls for shooter fans, so there's nothing here that takes a lot of time to get used to.

Ghostbusters: The Videogame is possibly one of the best adaptations ever done of a film to a videogame. Its secret is a very detailed ambience, but the best thing is that it not only plays with our nostalgia, it also has great playability. The absence of Rick Moranis is the only thing that prevents the game from being perfect, but if you love the films this is what you've always dreamed of.

The gang’s all here—well, except for Louis. Terminal Reality might have created the only true Ghostbusters game, ever, but it’s about as good as we could have asked for (could have used more Murray, though). Who you gonna call? Atari for some DLC.

Ghostbusters: The Video Game does not quite have the charm of the films, nor does it have the depth and technical prowess of either system’s AAA titles, but we’re all better off for its existence. When it’s on form the game is a thrilling blend of pretty visuals, great physics and challenging action and when it loses its way it still never tramples on your childhood memories, providing the voices, the music and the icons that’ll keep fans happily busting on to the very end.

Ghostbusters does honor the movie. An entertaining game, with a huge array of gameplay possibilities. Some technical issues (judgements), problems with the AI, and a steep learning curve are the main problems with a game that could have fared much better. Nevertheless, it is a game recommended to the fans of Ivan Reitman's film, and to those who love the comedy of the 80s. To be a ghostbuster is the ultimate experience.

The difficult job of creating a game that feels truly authentic and lives up to the franchise's fame has been done successfully. Ghostbusters: The Video Game simply 'breathes' Ghostbusters, and players will get their kicks with some awesome 'ghost slinging' action throughout some diverse environments. The game doesn't really set any new standards for videogaming as a whole and could have been a bit longer for the lone players out there, but still, Ghostbusters: The Video Game definitely does what you expect of it and want it to do.

Ghostbusters is a good game, a bit far from the great 3rd person action titles in gameplay and, specially, in visuals, but it has two things which make it a unique game, the originality of its gameplay, and the atmosphere: the sensation of being starring a Ghostbusters movie, interacting with, learning of and following the path of a myth of the eighties.

A solid cast added to a recognizable storyline in familiar surroundings will let you almost share and feel the ghost busting experience. Wonderfully created cut scenes and down time in the HQ adds intensity and authenticity to that experience. Ghostbusters: The Videogame feels just like a new chapter in the saga with its well-penned script and excellent voice acting, but apart from the ghost wrangling the gameplay itself never manages to reach any greater heights. The graphics are average at best, and the repetitive 8 hour story isn't that exciting. However, the oodles of charm that the game exudes more than makes up for this. A must for Ghostbusters fans, but only mildly interesting for newcomers to the series.

As licensed games go, it's above average - but given that the film series it is based on was last seen at the cinemas over 20 years ago, it's a bit of disappointment that it still feels a bit rushed. It could have been (and based on pre-release media, seemed to be) so much better.

Fans of the Ghostbusters movies from the 80's will be happy to know that this videogame adaptation has managed to capture the charming and geeky atmosphere found in the silver screen source material. Once you've acquired enough weapons and upgrades the gameplay becomes really entertaining and you'll also find a multiplayer mode that acts as entertaining bonus material, at least for a little while. Annoying flaws, such as grotesquely long loading sequences and sudden inexplicable deaths, do hamper an otherwise great experience well worth checking out.

What Our Users Said

The average user rating for this game is 8.3 (out of 10) based on 34 User Votes

Note: User votes are NOT included in the Metascore calculation.

Ed V gave it a9:
I read the reviews, and was a bit disappointed about how the game rated. Saddened, I bought it anyway and braced for a letdown, but … I loved it! All that nitpicking and garbage that people were saying meant a hill of beans to me. Ya, it could have been done better here and polished more there, but as a fan of the movies… they did an awesome job! It really feels like you’re playing a movie! Even my wife, who could care less about video games, found herself watching me play and was laughing at the dialogue and side conversations the other Ghostbusters were having. Great job Atari!! And thank you.

Timo A gave it an8:
A fun game overall, although gets a bit repetitive after finishing the career mode and just playing it on network with others. But trying to get all the trophies will keep me going for a while.

Bob gave it a6:
Another case of a game being released before its finished. Full of bugs and glitches. The ghostbusters AI is dumb as a brick and will constantly get themselves killed, forcing you to play babysitter. Casual mode remedies this, however it makes the game devoid of any challenge. The load times are horrendous and the frame rate drops in almost every major fire-fight. The gameplay itself is great regardless and the story is a blast for those who grew up with the ghostbusters like myself. This game is definitely a fan service. The online mode is an excellent edition however several of the trophies are glitched, making the platinum impossible to obtain at this time. There are rumors that a patch is on it's way but it is inexcusable to release a game that's impossible to complete. Would have been rated much higher if the developers didn't rush this out the door in order to meet a deadline.

Mark D gave it an8:
Well, this really does a great job of capturing the look, feel and wit of the movies. From the superb script and voice acting done by the original cast, the Ghostbusters equipment, the famous theme tune. This is as authentic as you could possibly hope for and as Brad M below said it really does feel like they wrote a 3rd movie and you're part of it! All this would fall as flat as a pancake if the gameplay sucked though but thankfully this is also great fun to play. The controlls are well thought out, the weapons are imaginative and ther's enough surprises, scares, and epic set pieces to keep it fun through to the end. Ther's a few little irritations - the suddern deaths, linier level design and short time to complete (6-8 hrs). Nothing that's going to ruin your enjoyment too much mind but enough to stop this being a bona fide classic. This gets a hell of a lot more right then wrong though. In short this does justice to the original movies and is a cracking game in it's own right. What more do you want?!

Sam Lightfoot gave it a10:
OK, where do we start. Using your proton pack is exactly how I imagined it should be after watching these movies for 20 years. It's reckless and destructive, and it catches ghosts real good. This game rocks. It has great voice work from the original cast, a cool story written by Aykroyd and Ramis, and some pretty solid gameplay. It has some online multiplayer ghost busting mayhem too. If you're a fan of the movies at all, I can hardly recommend this game enough.

Duane F gave it a10:
This is hands-down the best Ghostbusters game in existence, and quite possibly one of the best film based game translations ever made.
