Summary
Iron Man, an explosive third-person action shooter game that pits one of the world's most renowned Super Heroes against unspeakable odds, draws its story from the upcoming movie while also incorporating story elements from original Iron Man comic books. Using the advanced technology in Iron Man's suits of armour, gamers can take advantage of the wide array of high-impact weapons to strategically annihilate any enemy force standing in their way. Before tackling stunning and immense open battlefields, players can customise their armour suit as they encounter progressively more vicious enemies, and fight in epic battles that could challenge even the toughest Super Heroes. Iron Man is a surprisingly deep game with some rough edges. If you can manage to get a grip on the controls and combat you will quickly grow to enjoy what the game has to offer.

If you can get past Iron Man’s head-scratching learning curve, what are you left with? A game that’s far from perfect, but still better than a lot of movie and comic book tie-ins that have come before ( *wink* Catwoman).

Good idea, bad performance. Even for the greatest fan of the comic, it will be hard to enjoy the game.

The chaotic levels are challenging, but they become far too repetitive far too quickly.

Whilst the game has some nice features in it, the overall gameplay is far too repetitive and boring.

Frustrating and unpolished, it smacks of a rushed movie tie-in. [Issue#92, p.92]
GameTrailers
Iron Man has its occasional bright spots, but the gameplay fluctuates between monotony and frustration. With technical meltdowns, unsightly visuals, and a jumbled plot line, there are more than enough reasons to leave this junker on the scrap heap.

Iron Man's high-flying new adventure is hindered by erratic difficulty and repetitive level design.
After the movie turned out to be such good fun, the game landed with a heavy thud, failing to offer anywhere near the same level of enjoyment.
The gameplay turns mundane as you blast target after target with no real feeling of being the all-powerful Iron Man. Worse yet, it suffers from too many setbacks with its flying and ground combat.

The fact that I was constantly thinking about what button to push, even as I was rounding into the final set of missions, well...that's just a big design no-no. [June 2008, p.72]

A lazy wasteful mess. [June 2008, p.103]

Even fans of the comic won’t have fun with this piece. At the beginning, the permanent explosions are quite entertaining, but soon they get as boring as the monotony of a firing machine gun. No, thanks!

Needless to say, I played this entire game tense, angry, and praying that the next level would be the last. I never really felt like I was in control at any point during the game. The summer movie games usually bring misery, but I never expected them to bring this much pain.

Flying is fun, the upgrades are neat, and the game can look good. However, these pros are outweighed by the aforementioned frustration, crappy storyline and lame cutscenes.
Read Full Review >PSM3 Magazine UK
Overall Flying is sometimes a joy, but Iron Man is basically repetitive, confusing and graceless.

If we add a repetitive level design, a problematic gameplay and some poor technical elements, the result is... the typical movie adaptation. And unfortunately, Iron Man stays painfully true to this rule. [June 2008]

We've come to expect a missing coat of polish on film tie-ins, but Iron Man seems to lack even a level of care, resulting in a drab adaptation that sinks well beyond simple mediocrity.

This product is too crude for even the ‘mainstream’ demographic; it can only possibly appeal to the ignorant.
Everything about it is unpolished (save for the bearable shooting), from the graphics to the lack of any comprehensible plot, demonstrating why you should just go and see the movie instead.

Littered with slowdown, needless cut-scenes and droll monotonous play, Iron Man is as disappointing an effort as Sega has published in its entire history.
The animation is basic, the environments look last-generation and the whole game just looks dead, as if it was thrown together by a work-experience lacky at the last minute when SEGA realised they'd forgotten something.

It seems Secret Level somehow managed to circumvent everything that can make games fun as they produced Iron Man. It's not awful, but its decidedly below average from beginning to end. The game is not necessarily the laziest attempt at a cash-in I've ever played, but it's certainly on the right track.

Joshua B. gave it a6:
Could I just say, I haven't completed the game, but this is what I can say about it: Pretty much beautiful graphics, until you land on the ground, and it's all murky and horrible. bah. Gameplay is litterally a shoot-y fly-y game, hovering over tanks firing missiles and blasting it. When on the ground controls are all slidey and unresponsive. Anyway, flying around is a joy, and I've had quite a bit of fun blowing stuff up.
Matthias L. gave it a2:
Games based on movies will always suck.
Priyanth T. gave it a6:
This game looks as if it has nothing to do with the movie. the graphics arent good but the levels get tougher and tougher.
Chase K. gave it an8:
The action in this game is really cool. Dodging missles is my favorite part - I really like how you can catch the missles and then throw them back at your enemy.
Binary R. gave it a7:
I think one of the main things is that it came out in the same week as GTA IV, which is unfortunate. Yes it could have been better, but all in all it is fun just to fly (or run) around and blowing stuff up in a great looking suit. Oh suits, as you can unlock quite a bunch of the Iron Man legacy and modern suits from the comics. That is a nice touch. I think most reviews so far has been overly harsh, although it is not the greatest game out there, it is fun nevertheless and is probably one of the coolest Marvel super heroes ever apart from Spidey. At least worth a rent and for Marvel fans, if you enjoyed the Spiderman 3 game, which I did, then you will probably just pick it up anyway
Clayton D. gave it an8:
Given that the team that worked on this had approximatel 1.5 years from concept to completion on a new and still developing engine, Id say that this is a pretty triumphant release.
