A brilliant game youi get for free with "MGS4." What's to complain about? [July 2008, p.64]
Gamers.at
Metal Gear Online is really a damn lot of fun for hours…at least after one has struggled through the rather annoying application process and finally managed to get online. Apart from some minor glitches in some of the context sensitive actions (the very same as in the main game) everything runs smoothly.

Without being the most accessible shooter ever, Metal Gear Online is compelling, and perfectly able to grasp players for quite some time.

Metal Gear Online is a fairly entertaining online shooter that suffers from slow-paced gameplay and unnecessarily elaborate level design. [Sept 2008]
Playstation Official Magazine UK
The slower pace might frustrate those used to COD4's adrenaline-soaked battles or Warhawk's arcadey clashes, but it's still a thrill. As a Metal Gear game it works beautifully, capturing the series' essence perfectly. [July 2008, p.108]
Playstation Universe
Although it has some regrettable issues, the execution of Metal Gear gameplay in an online setting makes for an enjoyable experience that is, at the very least, worth sinking a few hours into.

Metal Gear Online is offered with Guns of the Patriots, and, being free, most of its flaws can be overlooked. As a game by itself, it would show little argument facing other heavy hitters available on the platform. Eyed as a bonus, it offers enough fun to be worth some time.

If, however, Konami plans to turn this into an ongoing spin-off with commercial potential then it needs serious work to either shape it into something outlandish that could only be done online with the Metal Gear series, or to better blend the Metal Gear elements into the established tropes of the multiplayer action genre.

Metal Gear Online has a lot of potential for an online-only game, but it just seems incomplete at the moment in regards to content.

Mika T. gave it a6:
Today we have multiplayer games like CoD4 wich are superb. Then came this, what a dissapointment. MGS4 itself is a great game which deserves all the top rating it have, but this. No. Controls are poor, graphics are boring as are the maps too. And they try to sell this game separetely somewhere. Who would pay for this when you can choose something like CoD4?
Leon R. gave it a10:
Really lives up to the metal gear series, loads of serious fun to be had here and not just for the online enthusiast either. With the addition of the expansion packs and the all new reward system to earn yourself some nice camo'd gear etc and possible more to come, it's a real worthwhile game to play, even if the sign up process is tedius..
DJ gave it a9:
Great game, this is the first game I've played online on consoles since Ghost Recon on Xbox live. The slower pace is much more enjoyable and reminds me of GR where you need to plan your attack and defense. This is not a spray and pray, run around deathmatch game like the "meh" console CoD4 and UT3 (PC versions are amazing). Overall this is a very enjoyable free package although the registration for this game was ridiculous. Looking forward to more content!
Jonathan L. gave it a9:
Just about the only shooter with a stealth element on the market. Metal Gear Online is a terrific mix of a third-person shooter with tactical, teamwork oriented elements. MGO makes MGS4 one of the highest replay value games to date. Fun, exciting, tactical all with the outstanding graphics, audio and navigation menus of MGS4.
Mike D gave it a7:
The game itself is probably the best video game I've ever had the pleasure of playing, but the online action is lacking. The drebin points system in online play is a little annoying. You should be able to keep points at the very least so that you could "unlock" other weapons such as in Call of Duty 4 online. It would also be nice to view player stats in the lobby. Friend invites should be made easier as well. Overall I give it a 7.
Mustafa G. gave it a9:
Does not quit match the single player part of MGS, but it still has fairly deep gameplay mechanics.
Sam J. gave it a5:
Mgs4 single player was a success, but online is average, it's slow paced, and there are not many options. you should be able to create classes and there needs to be more guns and maps.more game modes would be great too.avoid this game till it has improved and buy battlefield bad company.
