Summary
Welcome to MotorStorm, the world's most brutal off-road racing event where the goal is to win at all costs. Choose from seven vehicle types, from high-flying dirt bikes to powerful big rigs, and destroy anything that gets in your way in a no-holds barred sprint to the finish. Try and survive. Real-Time Deforming Terrain: The terrain literally gets torn up with each passing vehicle, causing each lap to be different. Advanced particle effects cause debris and muck to "stick" to each vehicle. Vehicular Combat and Damage: Destroy anything that gets in your way. Smash your opponents and view spectacular Hollywood-style crash sequences. Take the Race Online: Intense head-to-head off-road racing. Challenge the competition over voice chat. AI opponents simulate human traits, like showing off, attacking, taunting, and doing whatever it takes to win. [SCEE]

This is the pinnacle of off-road racing. It has never been anywhere near this good. [Mar 2007, p.59]
Pure Magazine UK
There's something supremely satisfying about piling your vehicle into a solid piece of rock and watching every item, from separate nuts and bolts to springs and suspension arms, sent flying through the sky...An amazing racer. [Mar 2007, p.42]
PGNx Media
The particle effects are simply amazing: you’ll notice more and more mud accumulating on the vehicles as you race and you’ll notice that tire tracks stay on the tracks for the duration of the game. The game even manages to throw in superb crashes, excellent lighting, and remain at a constant framerate.

One of the best racing experiences out there today. To say MotorStorm is just "fun" is a huge understatement. Part of reason why is the combination of smartly designed courses and complex AI that keeps the game challenging.

Truly awesome without the online mode, and an absolute must-buy launch title with it. [Issue #151, p.60]
Game Chronicles
MotorStorm is definitely the showcase title for the PS3 that we all expected it to be, with a great selection of vehicles that actually lend themselves to varied racing strategies and unique routes through wonderfully intricate and natural track designs.

MotorStorm would have scored even higher if it had more modes of play, luckily the ones that are here don’t disappoint at all.

Motorstorm might be the first truly essential racer for the PS3. It offers something for everyone and is almost infinitely replayable, definitely some of the most fun the system has seen.

MotorStorm's online multiplayer puts a lot of next-gen titles to shame...You'll never tire of the varied strategies and goofy behavior exhibited by your online opponents, and it's a great way to enjoy this game. It's still a shame that this -- along with more and more next-gen titles -- are missing local multiplayer.

There's no denying that MotorStorm is a visual triumph. The game's realistic graphics offer a tantalizing glimpse of what the PS3 may be able capable of down the line. This is the only racing game I've ever enjoyed playing from the first-person view, simply because I get to see all the game's details up close.

Motor Storm will please any racing fan with its aggressive hard pounding action, unique track design, and variety in vehicles.

Even with a barren landscape of options, Motorstorm's annihilative mindset, suicidal gameplay and opulent presentation make this one race, regardless of the means, that has to be engaged at least once - even if it's only for a weekend rental.

Evolution Studios have taken the racing genre, stripped away all the excess flab that it has acquired over the years and rebuilt it, putting sheer fun at the top of the agenda once again. Motorstorm is a must-buy for any PlayStation 3 owner, it's that simple.

Ignore the long load times and very challenging gameplay, and you have one of the most impressive racing game on the PS3, with plenty of vehicles, tracks and visual flair to admire.

As a launch title, Motorstorm is the best justification for buying a PS3 there is. It does everything brilliantly and when you start racing it gets even better.

As a showcase title, a technological spectacle, and as a nonstop, nerve bending example of extreme racing, MotorStorm is the current heavyweight next-gen racing champ.

Yes, the limited number of tracks and gameplay options hold it back quite a bit, but the fundamental racing is incredible. The variety in vehicle types is great, the track designs are awesome and the online is extremely fun. We simply cannot wait for a sequel.

The overall package may feel a little light in terms of variety, but the game is terrific eye candy that plays very well, has a solid challenge and is much fun to play.

While it doesn’t even come close to the chaos of the pre-rendered footage we saw last May, it does deliver as a solid racer.

It’s fresh in a way racing games haven’t felt for years, has a decent soundtrack and it somehow manages to make racing big rigs and mud-pluggers look cool.

It's not quite the "killer app" Sony needs to sell systems, but it's certainly exceptional nonetheless. [May 2007, p.74]
Game Almighty
Its diverse selection of vehicles will appeal to racing fans of any type, and the rough and tumble arcade style of the gameplay will satisfy most action junkies' adrenaline withdrawals...at least until the inevitable sequel rolls off the assembly line.

Undeniably gorgeous, but somehow still feels like a "work in progress". [Apr 2007, p.62]
PALGN
The omission of a quick race option and the short single player mode both indicate that the game's development was a little rushed for the launch of the PlayStation 3. Despite this, MotorStorm comes highly recommended, it's an addictive racing game and features some of the most incredible AI ever seen in a console game.

Motorstorm looks to be the start of a great racing franchise for the PS3. Although the game is somewhat hurt by a limited single player experience (only one race mode) and rather small amount of tracks the great online multiplayer and kick ass graphics help to compensate for this.

The graphics in this game are the heart and soul of the title. Great care and attention to detail was paid to the environments and the physics. You will feel as if you are actually in an off-road race, busting around corners and spraying up debris.

Motorstorm's online mode gives the impression it was rushed in at the last moment. It works well in-game but its functionality is minimal.

The unparalleled presentation MotorStorm dishes out certainly deserves praise, but it isn’t enough to hide a number of glaring omissions in its gameplay. Lacking several standard single and multiplayer features, the game feels somewhat shallow.

Lag is non-existent or not noticeable even with a full pack of racers and voice chat works well both in the lobby and within the game itself. On the negative side, the lobby/player grid is lacking some important strategic details, for example, what vehicles your competition have chosen.

MotorStorm is a blast to play, but it could really use more content to beef up the experience.

A great first effort for a new series. A distinct lack of gameplay modes is the only hindrance in this title. After playing, it's clear that Sony just got another killer racing exclusive.

The first game to incorporate PS3's Sixaxis pad as a natural extension of the way you play, rather than a hastily tacked-on novelty...It's been implemented beautifully. [Apr 2007, p.86]
ZTGameDomain
Right now with its small selection of tracks and shallow career mode the game falls short of being a classic. Still if you are a PS3 owner in need of some new software MotorStorm will satisfy in just about every area.
The anal-retentiveness of the gameplay will attract the sorts of people who find track memorization and careful controls to be rewarding, though we don't recommend using the Sixaxis motion control to steer. Casual gamers, however, might want to stay far, far away.

The sense of space and scope – of being liberated from the racing line and of being able to intuitively respond to a vast and detailed landscape – is exactly the kind of step-up a new machine needs to offer. [Apr 2007, p.74]

It’s not a killer app to sell PS3’s to the masses, but it’s a good, fun game for those who already have taken the plunge on the console...which for now seems good enough.

It's a launch title in every sense of term (awkward motion control included), doing its bit to showcase the PlayStation 3's power but skimping on features.

As much as MotorStorm does right, it’s obviously just a first step. As it stands, however, the mayhem that MotorStorm creates is enough to have you gunning for the finish line and doing whatever it takes to get there.

The ferocity of the racing action and the style in which Evolution Studios have accomplished, results in a fantastic early benchmark for PS3 racing titles and a significant game to have at launch.

One of the best new racing games in ages whether you play it alone or with friends. What's more, there's no obvious way it could be done on a previous PlayStation. Believe me when I say I'm as shocked as you are - but not shocked enough to stop me pinching points for a lack of tracks and modes. More please, Evolution.

While the loading times are a little lengthy, especially when choosing which vehicle to use, scrolling through them is a chore that I could have done without, but aside from that, there seems nothing wrong with Motorstorm at all.

MotorStorm does everything you want it to. It’s fast, furious, gorgeous, addictive and challenging, however it is not perfect. The lack of split screen is a huge blow for the game, as are the long loading times, but these don’t detract from how good the game is.

It's hard to recommend MotorStorm to someone who is looking to spend a lot of time playing it offline - the core is painfully limited, there are no other modes, and the vehicular selection is forced...But for the online folk, you'll surely want to keep this game around for quite some time.

With its lack of modes and options, MotorStorm is really a tech demo for the PlayStation 3. While it’s fallen a bit short of its target render, there’s no denying that it’s one of the most gorgeous racing games ever.

MotorStorm has an abysmally low amount of gameplay modes, which really takes away from the game's lasting value. It's too bad, as the actual racing is arcadey but fairly deep and very fun.

It's far too shallow an experience. Play the lone single-player career mode for any length of time and the frustrations start to kick in, hard.

Sadly, there is no split-screen multiplayer mode. There is an online mode, the same as regular "Play" mode, except against people all over the world. The graphics, as in all PS3 games, are unbelievably first-rate.

Just how much you value remarkable graphics will decide if MotorStorm is for you, as the few tracks on offer are magnificent to behold. For any proud new owner of the PlayStation 3, it's a standard bearer, but all too soon you'll be looking to leave Monument valley.

This amazing-looking offroad racer demonstrates the potential of the PS3's power, but the limited variety of races and the lack of worthwhile unlockable goodies hurts its long-term appeal.

Stunted online, late-game AI that literally cheats to win and then spits in your face as it moves en masse to the finish line at the last second, and a dearth of racing options all conspire to take a huge dump in your gaming corn flakes.

Simply put, the biggest problem with MotorStorm is the lack of depth in the offline portion of the game. No quick race modes, no offline multiplayer, bulky controls on some of the larger vehicles, and extremely repetitive single player gameplay.

There’s a fun game here but it felt a bit lightweight for a full-fledged release. So assuming you aren’t one of those fancy French Formula One fans, get a little mud action on that PS3 of yours.

Joshua B. gave it a9:
Xbox fanboys have ruined the user score. It sure is a shame when Motorstorm is one of the best racing games I've ever played. Actually, wrong, It is THE BEST. This game has the best graphics a racing game could produce, with absolutely INCREDIBLE mud physics. Sure, it is a bit hard at the start, but you can get used to it, and then you suddenly become addicted. Oh, and I forgot, there's a twist in the races. There's lots of different types of vehicles, and on some races you'll be able to choose from every class. On the map that you race on there's always things pointing out which class of vehicle should go which way. Say if you were a big truck. There was a ramp with a sign of a picture with a line through a truck. If you go on it, basically, your dead. Great game, I would reccomend it to anyone! (onlines a bit sore though, except for downloadable content, that's great right now).
Daniel N. gave it a9:
The user rating for this game has suffered quite a lot from xbox 360 fanboys. The game looks great and is real fun to play, the online is quite good as well. Only one flaw with the game is that their is no splitscreen however if the player really wasn't splitscreen then they should get the Japanese version... the PS3 is multiregional!
Leon L. gave it an8:
It is fun to play initially. When it goes to level 3, it's getting unfair to compete with the computers. Online playing is the most valuable feature. However, I'm facing connection problem sometimes. No doubt it is one of the best graphic for PS3 games so far.
Sauce gave it a9:
Really good. Sure its not perfect, and more tracks would be nice, but the downloads are a steady stream of content while the package by itself is worthy of your time. Splitscreen in Motorstorm 2 please.
Suleiman M gave it an8:
At the end of the day, Motorstorm is a satisfying racer. The graphics are great, the gameplay is awesome, and the online is smooth. Although a bit lacking in features, Motorstorm satisfies nonetheless. If you're looking for a racer with great physics, some nice single player and multiplayer, then look no further, Motorstorm fits the bill.
Donks B gave it a3:
This game could and should be so much better. It starts off really well but then the maps just become repetitive and it takes a ridiculously long time from dying to re-spawn. The AI is a big disappointment, after a while you realize that only the vehicles in front of you are racing, once you pass them the game keeps them in suspended animation directly behind you which means that when you make a mistake you go from first to last place almost instantly. This is proven by looking at the times when you finish, if you finish say 3rd then the two in front may be a few seconds in front but everyone behind you is within one second of your time. This becomes a real problem when you get to level four maps as most of the other vehicles are not actually racing, they are just trying to knock you off so others can race pass, to the extent that the games just becomes pointless and irritating.
Christopher S. gave it an8:
If your looking for a game to show off the power of the PS3 this is the one. Probably one of the finest looking racing games ever made and that alone is reason enough to buy it. The game play isn't bad either, with a sophisticated physics model and challenging, almost to the point of frustrating, rival AI. Evolution studios has done a commendable job. I hope they're hard at work producing their next WRC title.
