Summary

The brutal offroad racing festival is back, with players this time attempting to tackle the diversity and unpredictability of a remote Pacific island environment. MotorStorm: Pacific Rift revisits the intense racing action introduced in last year's MotorStorm, this time allowing players to navigate a radically different tropical environment chock full of lush jungle, towering peaks, and crystal-clear water. Players experience a greater selection of tracks and vehicles to choose, as well as extensive multiplayer options including four player split screen and races with up to 20 players online. Additionally players can utilize a new photo mode to save images within the game and for the first time be able to take music from their PS3's HDD to create a customized soundtrack. [Sony]

MotorStorm: Pacific Rift is everything I would have hoped for in a MotorStorm sequel. Sure, it still has some of those quirks found in the original that players may love or hate, but Evolution Studios has put together a well-rounded racer that improves greatly on the original in every way.

MotorStorm: Pacific Rift has been a long time coming - and has had other off-road contenders like Pure nipping at its heels - but the old magic that made the first one a ripper is back, with more vehicles, loads more tracks and a better implemented online feature set. Unless you hate off-road car games with a venomous passion this is pretty much a must-have.

Motorstorm 2 gives us the one feature that the original failed to deliver. The game is fun. No more repeated crashes into the side of a cliff because all of the terrain looks identical and you have no idea which way is forward anymore. No more frustratingly difficult AI that is always directly behind you no matter how well you’ve been driving.

Undoubtedly Pacific Rift is much better than the first Motorstorm. Sony and Evolution Studios have been working hard to solve every complaint from the users about the first part. There are a ton of events, the difficulty has been polished and the value of the program is severely increased. Very recommendable for the fans of the wildest speed games.

We're still not completely sold on what we believe is an overly harsh handling model that frequently restricts the amount of fun the average gamer can have, but it's not an insurmountable problem. MotorStorm: Pacific Rift features everything that made the original successful: wild, arcade races with plenty of vehicles to choose. This time, besides, it's done with so much detail that the experience feels fresh and new. 16 different tracks, doubling the original, and with very clever course designs counting on which kind of driver are you. A very worthy sequel. It doesn't change any of the fundamental aspects of the original's gameplay; it just builds on them and gives you a helluva lot more bang for your buck. With the first Motorstorm we were amazed by the stunning graphics, spectacular crashes and the aggressive AI. With Pacific Rift we are treated to some great new environments and courses but the developer Evolution Studios hasn't really found their direction for this sequel. Despite fulfilling all the promises they made to fans of the first game - split screen action, more vehicles on screen and larger levels - Evolution Studios haven't really dared to do too many new things. TheSixthAxis

The major issue here is one of expectations; Pacific Rift falls well short of them. Motorstorm was a stellar introduction to the PS3 and the sequel feels like a watered-down, consumer-friendly game that doesn’t add up to the sum of its parts. If you’re looking for an arcade racer there’s more on the market than back in March 2007, and many of these have made advances while Pacific Rift is stuck in Motorstorm’s beautifully realised mud.

What Our Users Said

The average user rating for this game is 7.9 (out of 10) based on 210 User Votes

Note: User votes are NOT included in the Metascore calculation.

P. Keith gave it a9:
The first Motorstorm had a great sense of pure, no-rules, get-to-the-finish-first-no-matter-what-it-takes style chaos. Vehicles running over each other, ramming, boosting, exploding, all while tearing through some of the best off-road tracks designed. Pacific Rift keeps that feeling of off-road war with more to add. The addition of the attack buttons and monster trucks vamps it up even more. More tracks, more songs, crazier gameplay and even better graphics makes Motorstorm Pacific Rift a perfect example of what a sequel SHOULD be. The single player mode is very well-done with new game modes and a rank system that make it easier to keep track of your progress and unlock vehicles. As in the previous game, the multiplayer is well made and enjoyable. There is one major problem with Pacific Rift. The singleplayer mode, used to unlock vehicles and of course trophies, can be insanely frustrating. A single crash can set you back all the way to last place, and since the majority of the single player races are only two laps, it can be very stressful trying to claw your way back up to the front of the pack only to snag 3rd and receive only 50 rank points. The chaos is awesome, but when you've got your heart set on 1st place, it can get in the way of your goal, and the AI opponents aren't afraid of using their attack buttons, either. Overall, a beautiful game with some truly pulse-pounding gameplay, online and off, though the offline mode can be quite frustrating at times.

M M gave it a10:
Best arcade racer you will find on any console. Amazing graphics and the cars all handle well. Each vehicle handles differently, but there is vehicle better than the rest, resulting in a very balanced game. The PS3 handles it perfectly with no slow down, no matter what chaos is going on around, with great use of the Havok physics engine. Each level has many ways around them. I've been playing for over 10 hours and am still finding new paths for different vehicles. Any review saying the game suffers from slow down or bad grapahics (Frank B.) clearly has not played the game, not to mention the ludacrious claim of the PS3 breaking down all the time. If you doubt the graphics, just find some screen shots. It really is a great game.

barry b gave it an8:
"The game stutters", "I am on my 5th PS3"- doubt you had one ps3 in the first place Frank B., cos although not the perfect, motorstorm runs at the very smooth rate, at least 30 fps. and Ps3's don't BREAK DOWN ALL THE TIME, i don't wanna get all patronising or fanboy but everybody knows that xbox breakdown way more frequently. one last thing, I'd like to know this Wii game thats got better graphics as I'm interested in purchasing it??!!!?

ENOUGH!! gave it an8:
Frank B: Stop whining. THe Ps3 actually has the lowest failure rate. Back to the review. This game is almost too satisfying. You fly through the tracks at high speed, run over some poor sap who had gotten into your way, and somehow survive it all...OK, maybe not. But, this is, overall, a very good game. The graphics are beautiful, the camera system is a nice touch (It might actually take up half of your race if your are a good photographer), and the AI is agressive. All of this equals a worthy successor to the original, and it actually surpasses Motorstorm 1. FINAL MESSAGE: Stop rating down a game if it is not on your own console. This is getting old, tiresome, and incredibly idiotic. I know HIghschool never ends, but at least show some form of maturity.

Mike gave it a10:
Great game. Everything is improved from the 1st game. More tracks, vehicles, music and MONSTER TRUCKS!! Single player is great. 2 player split screen is also brilliant. I've tried 3 player too but even on a 40" screen it gets a bit awkward to see where you're going. Still a laugh though. I actually enjoyed it when I got flattened by a monster truck during one of the single player races! It was hilarious!

Mike D gave it a10:
This game is just balls-out, adrenaline-pumping mayhem -- arcade racing at its finest. I was bitterly disappointed in the new Burnout (don't get me started) and was looking for a game that would give me that special Burnout feeling. You know, driving at insane speeds, flying through the air, teetering on the edge of losing control, jaw clenched, aggressively looking to take out your rivals, etc. Boy, does Motorstorm Pacific Rift deliver. I simply adore this game. Highly recommended to anyone who loves fast, furious and most of all FUN arcade-style racing.

kegs 11 gave it a10:
Mint racing game that really gives you a challenge, none of that "hit the perfect apex" stuff. every lap feels like a brawl. MSPR is the automotive equivalent of a cage fight, which is probably why most fans of racing sims arent raving about it. It just needs a few months of development and fresh DLC to be perfect. To sum i think this is the greatest arcade racer since burnout 2
