Summary
Sprite Slam Dunk Contest - Live from Las Vegas, 2K is bringing you the Sprite Slam Dunk Contest, hosted by street legend Bobbito Garcia. Choose from hundreds of dunks and a vast array of props as you compete against the NBA's finest dunkers in this 4 player event. The Sprite Slam Dunk Contest is also playable online; it's here that you can prove to the world that you are the greatest dunker there is. More Signature Style - Customizable Free Throws, Dribble Moves, and Dunks give users total control over the way their favorite players play on the court. All new signature shots from many of your favorite NBA players, including #1 draft choice Greg Oden, as well as individual post and dribble moves, makes NBA 2K8 the most authentic NBA simulation on the market. Off-Ball Control - Run quick on the fly sets to get your favorite player the ball in the best situation for him to get a quick bucket. Use the Get Open button for a fast play, or call for the exact situation you want with the Off-Ball Control menu. On offense, you now have the option to switch off the ball handler to other players where you can call for alley-oops, jostle for post-position, set screens, etc. [2K Sports]

With NBA 2K8, you're looking at the best of all worlds. What worked last year is still there, and some great improvements have been made. It's the most fun and realistic game of video basketball available, despite it's few flaws.

A fantastic game. If you feel like a quick fix, you can hit up NBA blacktop mode and throw down some jams in a slam dunk contest out on the Vegas Strip (you can even jump over cars!). Want to head online? 2K8 features everything from leagues to two-player co-op play against the computer. Want to pause the game and gaze at Drew Gooden's patch on the back of his head? The choice (as strange as it may be) is yours.

For the third year in a row, 2K Sports has the best basketball game available. NBA 2K8 has vast improvements, tweaking an already capable engine with fresh animations and change-ups.

Basketball in its most realistic, exciting, and entertaining form. The controls and seamless player interactions make NBA 2K8 an instant showstopper – deep gameplay and high replay value provide the longevity you’ve come to expect (and demand) from 2K Sports.

The presentation and feel of the game is near-perfect, but the actual gameplay, particularly on offense, comes up short and frustrating. Lock-On D is a nice feature as well, but it can be a crutch.

If you're a fan of basketball games, I definitely recommend picking this one up, as it is the best basketball offering this year.

The animation system is absolutely enthralling to view, the association mode is deeper than Scrooge McDuck’s money bin, and the overall game looks and plays better than any other title in the genre.

This game's brilliant A.I. on offense, the lightning-quick load times, the remarkably improved faces of Steve Nash and Dirk Nowitzki, the new dunk competition minigame, and the removal of 24/7 mode are a load of positives that far outweigh the hang-ups.

Despite a few nagging issues, NBA 2K8 is a fantastic basketball game packed to the brim with features and game modes.

While NBA 2K8 may have some kinks to work out in its post game, it’s still the best basketball sim on the market.

It’s rare that a series takes as serious a step backwards as NBA 2K8 has this season. It’s missing modes and gameplay features from last year’s game, while adding subtle changes that few players will notice or make use of.

The post-game wrap-ups are especially good, enabling you to look at each player's top moments from the match. [Dec 2007, p.111]
GamerNode
The new dunk contest and other modes are nice, but the core gameplay is what should be what catches your eye, and NBA 2K8 nails it.

NBA 2K8 is still far and away that best game of basketball you are going to find. EA might have got their act together this year, but they are still a way off challenging the almighty 2K series.

It's certainly the best basketball game on any system this year. The Association is a solid franchise mode and, if VC can iron out its AI and gameplay issues, next year's model could be something very special.

An excellent sim let down by too-strong defenders. [Jan 2008, p.80]
Games Radar (in-house)
Another superbly entertaining basketball sim with some of the sickest visuals you've ever seen.

It's not quite as satisfying as the Celtics adding Kevin Garnett and, Ray Allen to support Paul Pierce in one off-season, but what is?

Shayne H. gave it a9:
It's very deep in Franchise mode and association mode iV'e got the worriers in my association,I'm good so im 33-0 but the heat and new jersey are right behind me! but its fun im good shooting the 3-point contest and A good Slamedunker on the game... Overall get this game the graphics might not be better than Lives but it's gameplay is great!!! Must Have!
BIG T P gave it an8:
The graphics are great but I don't like the fact that one you double team a guy your dribble is picked up for you. I like playing with The Lakers becaue I'm a fan of Kobe Bryant. I don't want to win the game by passing the ball around. I want to score with Kobe. By making you pick up the ball, your forced to give it up. To be that is boring. In real life if Kobe wants to take all the shots, no one can stop him from doing that. In 2k8 all you have to do is double him and shop close. Me and my friends hate that about the game.
Brandon G. gave it a9:
Great graphics, great gameplay, awesome dynasty mode ("the association"). Wish they would clean up the menu screens a bit, but otherwise, the best NBA sim to date
Quenton B. gave it a9:
Wow. The Live fanatics are out in full force, I see. 2k8 hasn't taken a step back in any direction. They've accurately modeled the arenas, have detailed player faces, new animations, etc. etc. If you like your virtual basketball to mirror actual basketball, get 2k8. If you're less of a sim player, get Live. That simple.
Master B. gave it a9:
This game is really good. Better then 2K7. Graphics wise, it hasn't really improve much, but it's not always about the graphics. Gameplay is where it's at. New features like lock-on D adds so much yet doesn't cheap the gameplay because the AI can get off of it. Animations is beautiful and realistic. You actually use different offensive plays now, instead of the same pick & roll. Love the game. Better then the other BBall game this year.
Giterdone gave it a6:
Damn man...these graphics look like they have taken a leap backwards. the character models are embarassing and feels way too arcadey and too easy to score. Live 08 character models are very impressive and I find it more of a sim than 2k8 this year. All of the nba games this year are somewhat disappointing but this is the not the best of them.
Jack Y. gave it a4:
It is unfortunate that the games seems to step back from NBA 2k7.
