The effort put into the depth of control of this game is very apparent. Each of the four modes of racing controls in subtly different ways, and racing aficionados will definitely be able to tell the difference.

This is a top-notch racer that is both challenging and a lot of fun. Hats off to EA and Black Box for re-energizing the franchise with a solid next-gen outing.

There is a slight learning curve, but the game is without a doubt the most rewarding since, perhaps, Hot Pursuit 2.

The best Need for Speed game in years. [Issue#161, p.86]
1UP
It feels more sophisticated, looks great, delivers tons of cars and racing disciplines, and upgrades what was already a solid online component. But far more critical, it's one of the best drives on the PS3.

ProStreet doesn't re-invent the wheel, but it definitely turns a corner for the series, and does it with enjoyable results. [Holiday 2007, p.77]
Kombo
While definitely not as intensive as to replace Forza or Gran Turismo, ProStreet takes the Need for Speed engine and shows that it is a solid competitor against even more traditional racing titles.

A new direction for the Need for Speed games, and it almost works. Whilst career mode is lengthy and rewarding and the game has stacks of cars and plenty of customising options, multiplayer is weak and the lag online is quite abundant.

A touch repetitive, but a confident, high speed, return to form for Need for Speed. [Christmas 2007, p.62]
Gaming Target
The problem with Need For Speed ProStreet is that while it's long-lasting and can be pretty enjoyable despite the AI problems, it's also a bit by-the-numbers at times and no longer really stands out like the NFS games used to.

While I too had a good time out on the tracks, ProStreet's bog-standard (but still superb-feeling) racing does little to evolve the series. [Holiday 2007, p.68]
GameTrailers
Having to cover the damage done to your cars gives playing the game a sense of desperation, and multiple event types mix things up. Even so, Need for Speed Pro Street doesn’t quite have enough meat to cover its bones and is best suited for players who are in for the challenge, not the big crashes.

Pro Street provides tons of race variations such as grip class, time attack, sector shootout, drift races, ¼ mile drag, ½ mile drag, wheelie competition, top speed runs, and speed challenges. The career mode does a nice job mixing up these race variations to help the game from growing stale too quickly.

We welcome with open arms the change of attitude and approach of this new Need for Speed. But we frown upon some of the problems that were left unsolved, like the structure of the career mode but mainly on the handling of the cars. But for those who turned their backs on the previous games, it’s a good place to return to this franchise. [Dec 2007]
Game Informer
The one undoubtedly cool thing that ProStreet brings to the table is its online play (except on Wii), where you can create your own race days and invite friends to compete them. The race day will keep a persistent leaderboard of everyone’s progress, so you can always go back and knock off your buddy.

ProStreet is a solid racing game, but it's missing most of what made the previous games in the series interesting.

Overall if you prefer your racers arcade style rather then simulations you might well get along much better with Need For Speed Pro Street, and once you forgive the odd behaviour of the car handling you can get along with the game fairly well.

Is ProStreet a change from the NFS formula? Yes. Is it a welcome change? Not really. The removal of the NFS staples and little new additions make this a rather generic racer.
Read Full Review >Game Over Online
Need for Speed: ProStreet is a good game-to get that out of the way. However, the decision to move away from what has made the series so great and toward the simulation style is a questionable one. Fans of the series will be upset with the omission of the cop chases, illegal racing, and overall shady mood.

A disappointing effort in a franchise that has generally been rather solid. It sort of feels like EA is starting over again, leaving the open-world aspects to other games like its own Burnout Paradise, but is seems like Black Box didn't know what to do with what was left.
Sure, it moves fast, and the online options deliver a sweet community aspect, but the 1/4-mile drag events suck, the game at times looks jaggier than a shark's mouth and the drab presentation denies it much needed personality. It's a decent racer, but not sexy enough to rev our engines.

A solid racing game with some good ideas, but the package is overshadowed by a dense, inaccessible structure and frankly boring events. Play online and you'll get more from the game.
For the past decade or so, the Need for Speed series has been all about illegal street racing, but Need for Speed: ProStreet completely sells out this most tantalizing aspect for some cheap (or, rather, extremely expensive) product placement.

ProStreet bursts onto the stage dropping frames like a drunken juggler. [Christmas 2007, p.90]
VideoGamer
ProStreet isn't a bad game, it simply doesn't hold a candle to its competition, and Need for Speed fans will be left wondering where all the fun has gone from the illegal, turned legal, street racing series.

The entire development team seems to have just tried too hard to make a decent title, and changed key areas of their previous titles which simply shouldn’t have been changed. Sadly, this Need for Speed title is the first one for a long time that needs to be left on the shelf.

Arya B. gave it a5:
My first NFS title was Hot Pursuit, back in school days, and that made me fall in love with the franchise. There were many ups and downs along the way, but Pro-Street has by far been my biggest disaapointment and a total heartbreaker. Looks like, in his zeal to think out of the box, the creatives went overboard. The lighting, the environs, the physics, though quiet new, somehow falied to provide the rush of the game. At the end, the whole reality that was brought in didnt really let me live the game. If I wanted too much of reality and physics, i'd just go and buy a GT or McRae title. My Rating of 5 goes totally to the technical enhancements to the game, and no more. Which so totally saddens me because this is a title i have skipped school to play. Thankfully EA also released the Burnout Paradise, so that I can hit other cars and drown my sorrows of NFS into that.
Lee S. gave it a6:
I have played and finished nfs Underground and Most Wanted, both great games. ProStreet isn't even close. I rented it to check it out and WILL bring it back early and get something else. I was very disappointed. No city to drive around in. No street racing like the great nfs series has put out. Cars look nice but the customization engine that made the others so great is just not there anymore. Having to race on all race circuit tracks is extremely boring. I wouldnt mind the damage too much if we had some of the same gameplay as previous versions. This was a big disappointment especially since this was the first game I rented on my new PS3. Bummer since i give Underground and Most Wanted high ratings.
Jonas L. gave it an8:
Some minor issues will annoy you, but overall a great game. I played it all the way through. I missed a garage where you can view your antire car collection at once. I think the Kings, or the games bosses poses limited or no difficulty at all. It took me a while to figure out how to use my own cars in multiplayer which was really irritating. The bocklet is very thin and will not answer many questions you might have.
xps2020 gave it a3:
Played all the nfs right from the very begining pc versions and through the psp and other larger consoles, this is the worst by far...very dissapointing game, no real sound quality just annoying comentry...graphics are ok but too unrealistic.....game modes are rubbish, no free roam like other nfs....cars dont respond well which is made worse with the ps3 controller being tiny and crap...finally damage to cars is not helpfull at all as it is easy to loose control, a terrible effort from the same makers who have a long line of previous nfs games, shame on you.
Mike S. gave it a2:
Remember need for speed carbon? Take away the cops, add damage to your car, annoying anouncers, crazy amounts of advertising, and you have need for speed prostreet. This game took away the fun factor of need for speed.... A waste to even rent this game.
Oguz S. gave it a5:
I don`t get it...we have seen PGR4,Forza 2,And need for speed looks terrible..EA have the tecnology to make this game look better but they didn`t...!! i am a racing game fan but this game is just disappointing...if i wanted a race game that focuses on race tracks i rather paly Forza 2 or GT4.
