The level changes remove the garbage found in Gaiden 2, while creating an almost new experience, and the Team Mission mode introduces thoughtful, meaningful ways to test your skills. Any doubts about whether Team Ninja could succeed without their former boss now sit on shaky ground -- the developer seems to be thriving.

The additional characters are fun to play with, and revamped difficulty means that more players should be able to get some enjoyment out of the game, without feeling needlessly frustrated with a few annoying aspects.

Despite the newer casual direction of Ninja Gaiden, a series that was made popular with sadistic gameplay, hardcore gamers will still have a ton of fun with Sigma 2.

As a ninja connoisseur I can easily say this game is one of the top ninja based titles on the market with the exception of the grand daddy of all ninja games: Ninja Blade.

If you're a PS3 owner who's been chomping at the bit for this one, or even a 360 owner craving more demon-carving action, your day has come—savor it like a fresh kill.

The basics are the same from Ninja Gaiden II, and that's the best of Sigma 2. New features do not work so well: online coop is not that great, new missions are just OK, and new bosses are boring. But overall, it's still a great game, with new and improved visuals that make it even better than before.

Spectacularly violent stuff. [Nov 2009, p.122]
VideoGamer
Playing Ninja Gaiden 2 is a very different experience to playing the majority of games. Whether it's for simply beating a wave of blood-thirsty bats or for finally slaying a boss you've been tearing your hair out over for more than an hour, the sense of reward and gratification is practically unrivaled.

A long year has passed since Ninja Gaiden 2 launched, and although we hoped for more improvements in the Sigma’s formula, the game is incredible.

If you didn't play the original Ninja Gaiden II, the changes baked into Sigma 2 can be difficult to spot. But trust us, it's undergone a huge overhaul. Everything from enemy placement, frequency, and AI to the effectiveness of each weapon has been massaged to a point where the average player will be able to complete it without losing their mind.

Although it doesn't have many changes in comparison with the Xbox 360 original, and the game has aged during a year, it still one of the best action games out there.

Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 is easily the best version of the game, but it still lags behind the sheer polish and quality of the original. That said this is still one of the best action games of this generation, and PS3 owners should definitely not hesitate to lay down the sixty bucks for this amazing package.

Improvements in the difficulty, a smart retooling of the games stages and a whole lot of extra modes and add-ons make this game the definitive version of Ninja Gaiden out on consoles, as well as one of the deepest and most satisfying action adventure games available.

Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 is a great new part in the franchise. It comes a little bit late, but the PlayStation 3 version got a lot of extras like a kind of multiplayer. The action is great and graphics are stunning. Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 is a very good game for the PlayStation 3.

Sigma 2 is a longer, more action-packed edition of Ninja Gaiden II, and if you’ve never played the original you won’t notice the missing gore.

Evaluation of Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 is divided neatly into two. Taken as a title in itself is surely a good action, perhaps not particularly intriguing for its narrative, but solid in all other aspects, starting with a good playability and longevity well above the standards of the genre. Looked at as a conversion of a title released over a year ago, we cannot recommend the purchase to those who have already played and finished the X360 version. Ultimately, if you love the genre and you missed the latest edition of this important saga, do not hesitate, you will be more than satisfied, otherwise carefully consider the purchase.

Beating the game will take a few days, but mastering the escalating difficulty levels could take weeks, or in my case, many months of enjoyable practice.

Though it's the remake of a game released over a year ago, Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 confirms to be an excellent exponent of the action genre. If you already played the game on its Xbox 360 version, however, there's no reason to buy it once again.

There's certainly enough material in here to keep you occupied for hours on end and the wealth of freshly added ninja-gubbins demonstrates Team Ninja's commitment to providing real value for money. Having said that, the sheer unflinching brutality of Ninja Gaiden 2 on Xbox 360, for us, makes it the definitive version of the game.

Co-op is a bit of a cop out all told, and the other additions made to the game are largely superfluous. For those exclusively playing Ninja Gaiden II on the PS3 however, Sigma 2 is a genuine treat and nigh-on essential.

The Ninja Gaiden games aren’t for everyone. People will hate it; some will love it to death. The adventure may be linear and the hack n’ slash ridiculously repetitive but it’s so much fun. Despite the fact that this revamped version of last year’s Ninja Gaiden 2 game does things differently, it manages to keep the essence of the game intact. Taking into account that you might have never played a Ninja Gaiden game, there’s no reason why you should pass on this one.

Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 is worth checking out for PS3 owners who like hardcore action games and have never played the Xbox 360 version. The new additions, however, simply aren't worth replaying the game for if you have the original version, and the removal of the blood has done the game a significant disservice.

When you're playing a Ninja Gaiden game and not dying until the eighth chapter, it doesn't bode well for the future of the series as we know it. Oh, and the camera's still rubbish. [Nov 2009, p.100]

Matthew S gave it an8:
Gameplay is still the classic Ninja Gaiden that we all come to know and love. Graphics aren't improved much as far as environments go but the characters do show more detail than the 360 counterpart. There are a couple things that I don't like about this version. One is the removal of the blood and gore. In the 360 version it really adds to the gameplay and atmosphere. When you are cutting off limbs, you see red blood not purple mist. That is completely dumbing down the game and gives it a less brutal feel. Also enemy count was decreased but the AI is more intelligent so it makes up for that shortcoming. The game however is much easier due to the fact that projectile spamming has been significantly reduced. All these shortcomings make it feel less brutal compared to the 360 counterpart. I've beaten the 360 version twice so it will be easier for me. One thing I do like is the new and improved bow and arrow. It's much easier to shoot enemies with it and there are unlimited arrows much like your shurikens. The new boss battles are entertaining and challenging so that is a welcomed improvement. The online mode is fun and I haven't experienced many lag issues. Overall the action is great and the game is alot of fun. If you haven't played the 360 version then get this game. It's not as good as the first game but it's still a solid installment to the series. In the next NG hopefully they combine the brutality that the 360 version offers with the updated visuals and management of accessories like the bow and arrow as well as management of your essence and weapon upgrading. Plus the game should have been longer and get rid of the female characters in the single player campaign. They completely ruin the pace of the game. That would bring NG back to the top among action games.
Jayson gave it a0:
The Ninja Gaiden series is on the way out. This games showed me why the top staff leaving last year was such a big deal. Too many incoherent design choices were made with this and after completing it on MN, I was even more frustrated than I was after doing the same on the 360 version. This has one hit kills, the 360 game doesn't. I don't like how it removes so much good content that was in the 360 version either. But I still prefer the PS3 console. If they hadn't messed this game up, then I would have sold my 360 and games.
Purest Ninja gave it a0:
To think that they decided to cut back on the violence level in the brutal fights in favor of creating booby controls for the new girls. Especially considering how the girls all look like dolls with fake boobs attached. Taking out so much useful content that even the imperfect original had was stupid, stupid, stupid. It also sucks that I encountered just as many bugs and glitches in this game as the original, even though this one was suppose to be more polished up. The game is weak and not even close to being worth $60.
Jason M. gave it a5:
I don't know what people like about this game. It is a mindless button masher and there is no freedom in the level design. You are basically forced to move down an obvious path, and along the way batches of enemies come at you, which requires you to endlessly and mindlessly mash the buttons until all enemies on screen are dead. Very boring and repetitive gameplay. I don't know what people see in this.
Dave gave it a9:
Game play is spectacular, as usual. If you like this sort of thing, they really set the bar. Co-op play is excellent fun, although more levels would be nice. Personally i prefer the toned down gore. 3 complaints: Master ninja difficulty is a bit cheap compared to NGS I. Story is exceptionally weak. They should have made a few changes and allowed you to play all the characters on all (or at least most) of the levels.
Steven A gave it a9:
There's tons of things to do in this game. It's lots of fun, the visuals are sharp, the lighting effects bring excitement and it's a true challenge. I will admit I'm disappointed with the removal of blood and a few ranged weapons, such as the windmill shuriken. And I dislike the inability to do missions alone. However, the losses, in my opinion aren't too much to cry over. It's a long adventure with a badass set of characters. I will admit that the story isn't great, but the cliffhanger kept me excited and I will wait for the 3rd Ninja Gaiden to come out. An excellent action game I would recommend to fans of Dead or Alive, Ninja Gaiden, God of War, Devil May Cry or to fans of hack-and-slashers, in general.
Joe Doe gave it an8:
The game looks great and has a decent, fluid combat system. Having said that though, the story is...umm...never mind, I don't remember anything about it. And the game is HARD. Now I understand this isn't Devil May Cry or Heavenly Sword, and I understand the game is about blocking and countering at the right time. But even on the easiest difficulty, I don't expect to die 20 times in a row on the second level boss! You literally only have about a half-second window to attack in. Get it wrong and you loose half your life. Miss the opportunity and spend another 20 seconds trying to block and evade the many unblockable moves.... miss a few blocks and loose half your life or more. Ok, so the game is supposed to be hard and frustrating and there's no way around that (actually, you can try to stockpile healing items which will get your through the boss fights). But this leads me to the other complaint: for a tough grinding game, there's not enough character development. You get a few extra weapons and special attacks, and each weapon can be upgraded around 3 times (although the rate of upgrade is controlled by the game, you have no influence over it). But the weapon upgrades just unlock a few more combos and it's pretty hard to see the difference really. So the actual gameplay is very simple. Just hack & slash your way through every level, period. The incentive for said slashing is only your own personal satisfaction. The story is never a driver, nor is there any real reward system, which are major let downs.
