Summary
PES 2010 focuses on enhancing the excitement of matches between players, making for a truly challenging experience that constantly tests the player. Intuitive zonal defending covers spaces and players need to look constantly for new ways to attack. PES 2010 focuses on being a real soccer simulation, as it requires both strategic play and quick reactions, as in real life. In addition to key out-field elements, goalkeepers are more versatile and with abilities matching those of modern shot-stoppers. The game's referees have also been reworked, with smarter AI elements allowing them to make more balanced calls during matches. PES 2010 has undergone a major visual revamp, with its celebrated player likenesses and animations now even closer to those of real-life players - including live player expressions to be depicted with an improved lighting system which differentiates between various conditions! While a true sense of 'evolution' may be in short supply, Pro Evolution 2010 remains nothing short of a convincing return to form for Konami thanks to streamlined presentation, unpredictable gameplay, intuitive tactical planning, consistently variable challenge and a much-improved online service.

PES may not be evolving at the same rate as its competition, but that makes it comfortable and familiar. [Holiday 2009, p.84]
Cynamite
We enjoyed PES 2010's slower pacing, but FIFA 10 is slightly better. Especially FIFA's extensive licenses are missing from PES 2010.

Pro Evo 2010's headline improvements outweigh those in FIFA 10, but EA's game was at a position of greater strength, and has arguably made a more significant leap, with lots of smaller refinements...We're cautiously proud to confirm PES is back on track. [Nov 2009, p.72]
IGN UK
Improved graphics, streamlined tactical options and a relatively robust take on the series' winning formula ensure that this is the best PES yet, though it's not quite enough to topple FIFA from its well-earned perch.

PES 2010 is certainly the best of its series that we have seen so far on the new generation, but it still misses something. Stunning graphics and realistic ball physics are opposed to some conservative choices still tied to its glorious past, including an incomplete 360° control system.

Only the missing licenses and the commentator will let you take notice in a negative way. Great graphics, great game!

It’s tough to say which is better, Pro Evolution or FIFA, given that the former has more depth while the latter comes off as the sexier experience.

It has more changes than last year's and it's on the right track, but still far from what we all desire.

After putting significant hours into both games we’re more than happy to give Konami a nod of encouragement and to say ‘hey, that is more like it. Now we are getting somewhere.’ But that doesn’t change the fact that FIFA 10 is a superior soccer experience in pretty much every component and in a two horse race if you’re not first, you’re last.

Last year Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 wasn’t really good. This year Pro Evolution Soccer is back as it’s meant to be. Nice gameplay in the great Master League and a lot of other playable options. One point that’s still missing, are all of the official licenses.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 is immediate and playable. The problem is its attachment with its own past, leaving Konami's title many steps behind Fifa 10. The technical aspect is characterized by ups and downs, with great player realization against bad animations and ugly stadiums. Every fan will decide the winner of the challenge of football this season based on their experiences and their own tastes, but Konami with this new edition of its football title, finds himself sadly still behind its closest competitor, although an obvious first step in the right direction finally seems to have been taken.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 provides a fun, straightforward experience that builds on last year's game and gets the franchise back on track.

Perfectly enjoyable - might be the best PES ever, in fact. But is that a bit of a hollow boast? [Dec 2009, p.73]
Eurogamer Portugal
This was not the year of claim as the king of virtual football for Pro Evolution Soccer 2010, Konami will have to revise and create new moves, win more licenses and create more game modes to meet competition.

If Konami can build upon 2010 and add a little innovation to the mix while fixing the online modes, then PES 2011 should be on to a winner. Better, but not the best.

Where PES trumps FIFA is in its tactical depth. This year it's bordering on ludicrous just how in-depth you can manipulate the way your team plays. [Dec 2009, p.80]

PES is slowly creeping back up and it might have a chance to fight back FIFA if it keeps up this way. The return of some serious simulation ensures this is one of the better editions of the past years.

It's game on between the big two once again. [Dec 2009, p.114]
Eurogamer Italy
The latest edition of Pro Evolution Soccer tries to show something new but, in the end, there are no major improvements. The 'new engine' looks the same as the one of the past edition, while many animations that were to be fixed since ages are unfortunately still there. The only interesting options are the new 'sliding' tactics and the skill cards to apply to each player. In the end it's a good soccer game, but FIFA 10 is on an upper level.

Pro Evolution soccer is a good improvement since last year, and is more arcade based than previous years simulations. All you need to do is pick up the controller and enjoy the beautiful game.

PES 2010 is a fast paced and frantic football game and while it lacks the polish of FIFA it's still great fun to play.

PES 2010 brings hope to Konami’s series with its new iteration. Nice gameplay and fantastic visuals for the actually first Next-Gen Pro Evolution Soccer game.

Though the mode on hand are all old hat, they've been greatly refined. The online experience in particular is vastly improved.

PES is far from perfect, but if the ball starts to roll and two players are competitive to each other, you start to believe in PES again. Konami is pushing this game in the right direction and let us hope that Konami stays on this path. PES stays PES, and FIFA stays FIFA. It’s a certain feeling that should be generated if you play one of the two games. If you’re willing to put some time in this game, you can play for hours with joy.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 is heading back into the right direction, but there's not a lot of progress yet again. It still faces a few problems and its competition, Fifa, is running away. Fans will definitely enjoy this game, but the regular football lover will probably be better off with Fifa.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 is not the turning point everyone’s been waiting for over the past year. Yet again. The scarce number of novelties, and the low level of innovation and realism, opposite to a gameplay engine in desperate need for a rethinking, eventually have turned THE soccer simulation into something closer to an arcade game. Strangely enough, a game we may still like, though.

The gameplay is solid; it just isn’t able to keep pace with FIFA 10 in most regards.

PES 2010 is a step forward in the series, much better than the entries in the last few years; but overall it's still behind its main rival, especially on the gameplay side. Animations and transitions aren't realistic, and it just offers a gameplay that its hardcore fans love. The best PES this generation, but that's not saying much.

Overall Konami have upped their game in terms of bringing back the good old days of Pro Evolution Soccer. However with EA's FIFA series has been growing leaps and bounds each year, I'm not too sure if it's too late for Konami to gain the fans interest back.

PES diehards will defend the strangely robotic take on the beautiful game, but those wanting a flowing, realistic game should eye up the old adversary. [Issue#185, p.76]
AceGamez
Overall then, PES 2010 definitely makes some noticeable improvements on last year's game, but, both on and off the field it still lacks the complexity and polish of EA's rival offering.

It really is a shame that all the improvements are ruined by the online aspect. This may not be a deal-breaker for many people, and the offline multiplayer is as good as previous versions.

Robotic and methodical, and firmly in second place. [Dec 2009, p.97]
VideoGamer
PES 2010 is simply not good enough to challenge FIFA's dominance. It's an improvement on last year's effort, and fans of the more arcadey virtual football will find plenty to enjoy, but as a simulation it pales in comparison. PES 2010 is a return to form, but it is not a return to past glories.

It's hard to imagine why gamers would opt for PES over FIFA this year unless they are such stubborn fans of the series that they'll never let go. FIFA betters Konami's offerings more or less across the board this time around, while PES' continued lack of substantial gameplay innovations (even without any comparisons to FIFA) is becoming quite worrying to say the least.

Unfortunately there are only a few improvements in Pro Evolution Soccer 2010. PES-fans will be happy with some improvements in the different modes, but general soccer fans are better off with EA's FIFA 10.

Yes, FIFA is the superior offering this year -- but it's a lot closer than you might initially think. If Takatsuka's team tackles the animation issues and online hiccups next year like they addressed the graphics, presentation, and Master League this year, we could have a 2010 videogame footballing derby worthy of Premier League titans Liverpool and Man United.

Five years on from what was arguably the series' peak there has been no substantial development and no willingness to reflect the ambition of its own title - something we cannot abide. [Dec 2009, p.105]

Moonz gave it a9:
NO matter what critics say, it all comes down to the fans. If a player is into the authenticity of the gameplay, tactics, movements and formation then this is the current best game in town. If you feel like just dribbling past defenders and shooting as if shooting a gun in a 3rd person game then go for Fifa. True footballers would pick PES!
Steve gave it a1:
The worst Pro Evo game I have played. In terms of gameplay it is horrific. Player movement off the ball is an absolute joke. Players take too long to release the ball when shooting. Keepers are as bad as I have ever seen in a football game. I gave it 1 point because it is still better than FIFA but this game, it's just an absolute disgrace. I don't know how anyone who is a genuine football fan can call this game anything other than the massive pile of crap that it is.
Mark D gave it a6:
First let me say I was a huge PES fan on the ps1/ps2, it was clearly the most realistic, most enjoyable football game. Back then I thought Fifa was for kids with its high scoring games and poor gameplay. Things have changed. I can't understand some of the reviews when I read them. Ok I will say that graphically PES 2010 has improved on all previous games. The player faces are very good - much better than Fifa. The CL Mode is well presented and PES is better in terms of player individuality. Gameplay wise this version is no where near the best PS2 versions such as PES5 and PES6. There are a number of reasons for this. Player movement is robotic and stiff in comparison to Fifa's 360 movement, which is well implemented. The passing is just horrible, passes are under hit all the time, the ball is stuck under players feet, you can only make basic passes or you lose the ball. We are playing with players worth millions of £ yet they cant make any decent passes. Passing on Fifa is a little ping pong at times but atleast the game reacts when you press a button. Also on Fifa the passes go where you want them to go. The problems with PES gameplay go on and on, there is bad button lag. Nothing more frustrating when you press pass/shoot and it takes another 5 seconds for your player to execute the shot/pass. It should react instantly and be free flowing like it used to be, what have you done Konami. The goalkeepers are not great, the game is weak in the animation department compared to Fifa. The game feels scripted as though they want to make low scoring games. The gameplay (which is what matters most) is nothing compared to the PES games I used to love on the ps2. On a plus point the game is more challenging than Fifa, possibly because its more scripted. Graphics a big improvement this year. I don't like the nets they are not realistic, the ball often does a silly movement when it hits the net. Overall I am very disappointed with the PES games on the PS3. When I moved to next gen consoles I was most looking forward to a next-gen PES, I thought it would be amazing. However the series has gone backwards. It was always ahead in the gameplay department but now its behind in every department. The frustrating, unreactive gameplay added with the fakeness of PES makes this game very poor overall. I have tried it the last few years but Fifa is better, but not without its own faults. I wish Konami would have improved upon the ps2 versions as now we are left with mediocre football games.
Mark C gave it a9:
Its simple really. If you are into tactical soccer, like tinkering with formations and monitoring the growth of your players, if you expect a striker to behave like a striker when forced to take up defensive duties and know the difference between a defensive midfielder and a fullback, then this is the soccer game to play. When compared to the other soccer videogame, this actually plays like the sport. Anyone who plays soccer understand that you entire team does not sprint forward as soon as you obtain possession, but this seems to escape the programmers at EA. Very simply put, FIFA 10 plays like a hockey game without the sticks...and it doesnt suprise me seeing as how the game is made in Canada. If soccer/football is your favorite sport then choose PES. If you are a casual gamer..choose Fifa
Phil B gave it an8:
I have been a FIFA fan for as long as I can remember (33 years of age) and to be honest it has always delivered nearly every year. And for a while now it offers the TV/SKY Sports style exeperience we are all so familiar with and that is why I love it!! I had one year when I became hooked on Pro -Evo (not sure what year 07 maybe 08) but FIFA 09 took me back to class and 2010 now even classier. Realistic is the key word. Technical is another and at times there is an adrenaline feel of real achievement when you score! Yes it has some annoyances (FIFA 10) music is awful but who cares. Management Mode is basically still naff - with Board comments that often make no relevance, budget calculation may go all to cock in any new season but again no detriment to the game play which is simply awesome. Get a big TV 32 inch no less and HD. Bring the players in closer (Camera), I did this and I was in my element, the nearest to actually being out there on the pitch! 360 degree makes the whole experience almost flawless with fluid 'real life' movement and I actually like it when the ref gets in the way it all adds to the frustration of a real life footballers experience. So we know FIFA 10 is pretty much 10/10 but the reason I give it a 9 is: 1. Clicking through Menu Options is a bit too slow unlike with ProEvo. 2. Crosses are hit and miss. Never know whether to have a 99 Header of the ball or 99 volleys? Go for a big striker wack his heading up to 99 and accuracy to 99 and he will score his fair share over a season all the same. But still crosses I find mostly are a waste of time which basically means your wide players need good strength, pace and positioning to cut inside run at goal hold off the defender and also long range and finishing need to be up in the 80's and you will score some beauties! This brings me by the way to fiddling with your players abilities in the Edit menu to what you want them honed at according to how you play and what you want to get from them during a match. TIP: Pace hurts opposition. Give your Defenders a lot more pace aswell. 3. My biggest frustration is waiting for Transfers do we really care if we see Kasparachimikov move from FC Gogoonheem to FC Metz just pointless and time consuming - we know who we want to buy and that's all that matters - I just want to get from next match to next and the inbetween to be quicker! 4. Graphics is a lttle off in places. That's about it however we have been loyally lining EA Sports pockets for years now AND I would love to see Pro-Evo do something extraordinary one year soon but somehow I don't think they will well at least FIFA is on the button - remove those glitches make the commentating more comprehensive and a little more off the ball incidences perhaps a few more real stadiums and the official Champions League from Pro Evo and we wouldn't ever need a rival footy game as FIFA would rule the world!!!!!
something att gave it a9:
This game got harsh backlash from the media because of two admittedly horrible years before and the FIFA hype. This time it's back on form [kind of]...The PES elements can be seen here, the randomness of football, the variety of every match and team and the players (variety- something FIFA badly lacks) are all here for you to see. Granted, the gameplay needs a bit of ironing out but if you were a PES fanatic in the PS2 days and love how much care goes into recreating a match feel, you WILL get an excellent match feel with this edition. The core PES feel is here. Add on top of that a superbly improved Master League mode (they obviously been secretly working on this for at least 3 years), community mode that keeps stats of matches between you and your mates, and finally a lagless enough to be playable online mode and this is a PES that makes you see a light at the end of the tunnel and something any PES fanatic can pick up and fall in love with within 2-3 matches. This is finally a football game I fell in love with this gen and PES2011 will perfect the formula (hence the 9 for this one).
