Summary

[Playstation Network] The swashbuckling action in Ratchet & Clank Future: Quest for Booty begins one year following the intense ending in Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction. Ratchet's desperate search for Clank resumes with a bang as he finds himself engulfed in ship-board combat -- only to be cast adrift and washed up on the shores of a remote island on the planet Merdegraw. Our Lombax hero must overcome life-threatening challenges, encounter hostile new alien races and even form an allegiance with dreaded Captain Slag’s first mate, Rusty Pete. All in the pursuit of clues that lead Ratchet to the treasure of Captain Angstrom Darkwater, Slag's former commander and keeper of the only known link to the mysterious Zoni: the Fulcrum Star. Push, pull, and manipulate objects as you solve various puzzles using Ratchet's new wrench. New Light/Dark gameplay: Illuminate dark areas and use your wits to survive encounters with enemies that live in the dark. New Pirate Puzzles: Mix brew, manipulate shadows, and play tunes to find hidden booty. [SCEA]

For those who loved the last game, it's a brilliant treat; a chance for one last blast while we wait for a full-blown sequel. For newcomers it's an inexpensive way to discover what they've been missing out on. [Oct 2008, p.88]

Tiny but pretty humorous platform/fighting/shooter game. Non-stop action excels in perfect difficulty balancing. If only there were more than three hours of gameplay from the beginning to the very end. [Oct 2008]

All in all, if you are a fan of the series you will no doubt be impressed with Ratchet and Clank Future: Quest for Booty. And you absolutely know what to expect: gadgets and guns are this franchises staple. If you are new to the series this is not a hard game to pick up on.

Ratchet and Clank Future: Quest for Booty is like Tools of Destruction divided by four. It's a fourth the length and a fourth the price, but it's almost as brilliant as its predecessor, and that's saying something.

The visuals and sound are on the same level as Destruction, while the action-oriented gameplay keeps up the pace. There's nothing of long-term value, no Captain Quark minigames or arena missions, but the journey is worth it.

As current gen platform games go this is still one of the best even in a bite-sized package. As a Ratchet and Clank game however you're left yearning for all the bits they've left out. If you're a fan then there's enough platforming fun here to warrant its purchase just don't be expecting Tools of Destruction 2.

The game is shallow, but focused, and Insomniac's aim is clear: short, sweet, episodic content - but Quest for Booty gives the player the sense that Ratchet just isn't meant for episodic styling.

Quest for Booty's a fine addition to the Ratchet & Clank world, but what should've been a love letter to fans ends up serving better as a taste of what outsiders are missing -- and, as a fan, that makes me just a little bit sad.

An expansion to Tools of Destruction, Quest for Booty introduces some new gameplay mechanics and offers a slight push to the story. For those who miss Ratchet, here’s four hours plenty of fun, that compensate the lack of content with a low price. [Sept 2008]

Quest for Booty has been designed as a quick four-hour experience and it feels shortchanged because of it. Though its shooting and platforming sequences are fun and of high production, it still seems like there's something missing.

Though Quest for Booty, again, isn't a bad game, it's not a good Ratchet game, and in the end that makes for a slightly disappointing and possibly even overpriced offering. With zero replay value and only a few new tricks, this Quest isn't worth taking.

Quest for Booty is a solid, funny little platform game with good camerawork and controls so long established that their pristine execution scarcely warrants mention, but it feels so much like a regular Ratchet & Clank game that it's jarring to discover it ends so quickly, leaving us to damn it over and over again with faint praise.

It’s really a question of quality over quantity, and though some may balk at the £9.99 price tag for such a short non replayable experience, the actual gameplay reminds us all how platforming should be fun.

With Quest for Booty Insomniac Games shows that downloadable games are turning into a serious gaming-platform. Quest for Booty offers action and gameplay elements that are more than worthy for the platform genre. You even take the minor flaws the game has (no new features whatsoever and -in comparison with Tools of Destruction- limited possibilities) for granted when you see the price.

The Onion (A.V. Club)

Slick almost to a fault, Insomniac attempts to obscure the fact that Quest is merely more of the same via a façade of bombastic battles that unfortunately wind up being more tedious than exciting.

What Our Users Said

Scott E gave it a10:
Everything that makes Ratchet and Clank great is still here in this bite-sized portion. The humor, the great characters, the voice acting and of course, the fun! It's a short adventure, but it's great if you just want some classic R&C action without having to commit to a 20 hour quest. Very highly recommended, to fans and newcomers alike.

Damien R gave it a9:
You have to approach this game knowing that its only going to be 3 hrs long to begin with. Thats what a lot of people have a problem with; its too short. Its not an entire R&C game, its simply a small side-tale about the Zoni and Clank's mysterious disappearance. Thats it. Any fan of the R&C games, or even Tools of Destruction alone, will like this game. Just dont sit down expecting an adventure thats gonna last forever cause if you know what you're in for then there is absolutely nothing wrong with Quest for Booty.

AJ S gave it a7:
Not bad for a very short game. Its pretty much some simple puzzles with new ways to use your wrench. the next full blooded R&C should be all tools of destruction was and more with these few new additions.

Sandy M. gave it a6:
Quest for Booty is a shallow extension of Tools of Destruction. The core of what makes the Ratchet and Clank games great is still there and still I recommend this for any R&C fan. Where old R&C fans will be disappointed is there is very little gameplay beyond the first play through and said gameplay is very linear. There are almost no hidden collectibles besides a few weapon power-ups. Gone is the ability to revisit levels to find hidden bolts or earn skill points.

Aaro S gave it a10:
I like it more than Tools of Destruction and Tool of Destruction was also my game of 2007. Gameplay is AWESOME and the new gameplay elements fit perfectly with the theme. Graphics are amazing once again and music is better than before. You can choose your difficulty level between easy and hard. When you have beaten the game you can do it again and find extra weapon upgrades. Needs only 2.3GB in USA and 3.2 in Europe. Presentation: 9.6 Design: 9.3 Gameplay: 9.7 Replay: 9.0 Overall: 9.5

David C. gave it a7:
Wow this game was short. i expected a lot more out of Insomniac for this series. The game looks great and is always enjoyable, but the puzzles were too simple and the diversity (even for a Ratchet and Clank game) was minimal. Maybe $10!

Gordo J. gave it a1:
I played this at a friend's house. It seemed somehow shallow and empty. I know it's just a 3 hour game, but it was not fun the way the other R&C's are.
