Publisher: THQ

Developer: Volition, Inc.

Genre(s): Third-Person Shooter

Players: 16

ESRB Rating: M (Mature)

Release Date: June 2, 2009

Summary

Red Faction: Guerrilla is a 3rd person, open-world action shooter set on Mars, 50 years after the events of the original Red Faction. Players assume the role of an insurgent fighter with the newly re-established Red Faction movement as they battle for liberation from the oppressive Earth Defense Force. Throughout their fight for freedom, players carve their own path, wreaking havoc across the vast, open-world environment of Mars, from the desolate mining outpost of Parker to the gleaming EDF capital city of Eos. Utilizing improvised weapons, explosives and re-purposed mining equipment and vehicles, Red Faction: Guerrilla allows players to tear through fully destructible environments in an unforgiving Martian landscape swarming with EDF forces, Red Faction resistance fighters, and the downtrodden settlers caught in the cross-fire. Red Faction: Guerrilla also features a robust multiplayer component, including several modes focused on destruction-based gameplay. [THQ]

Though the game has a few faults, such as some occasional background pop-in and a few minor AI issues, the whole experience is a blast (literally), and you'd be missing a great action experience by not checking this one out.

Game Chronicles

If Red Faction: Guerrilla was merely a war game, or if it was merely a demolition game, it probably wouldn’t be this great, but the seamless blending of both elements into the massive futuristic landscape of Mars with loads of vehicles and weapons, sinister enemy AI, territory acquisition, and morale balancing, makes this one of the most inventive, addictive, and guilt pleasures on my PlayStation 3 this year.

One of Red Faction: Guerrilla's biggest strengths is that it's simply a lot of fun to play. Smart design decisions such as the minimal impact of death (which will happen) are of great benefit in achieving this goal.

By delivering a solid campaign mode, an incredibly vast open world, destructible environments and addictive multiplayer modes, THQ and Volition brings you a high quality game that you can’t miss. Red Faction: Guerrilla is a must have in your collection and it won’t be forgotten when award season starts somewhere by the end of the year. While people aren’t expecting the game that much, they will be extremely surprised by it. We highly recommend it.

Guerrilla isn't a terribly deep game, but as a "summer blockbuster," it works just right. It doesn't expect you to get lost in a deep, engaging sci-fi world -- you're on a mission to Mars to watch stuff explode. A deeper story might have made it more enjoyable in some respects, but it might also have killed the momentum of the demolition action.

This is explosive, balls-to-the-wall action that makes no concessions in delivering the ultimate playground in which to wreak havoc. The almost limitless potential for reckless mayhem is what makes Guerrilla such an unashamedly fun game to play, which is why this is without a doubt the biggest summer blockbuster so far this year and consequently an essential purchase. Now go on, get your ass to Mars.

Red Faction’s destruction tech is leaps and bounds beyond anything you’ve ever seen or played. But the fact this aspect encompasses nearly the entirety of the gameplay is really what makes it stand out; destroying stuff isn’t just a means of extracting some cool eye and ear candy within the game—it is the game.

When nowadays many games are concerned with a multitude of other things, Guerrilla aims to entertain and amuse the player. There are a few missteps here and there that can fluctuate the difficulty within a mission (the AI can be a bit iffy, and if you work through a building demolition fast enough, you can avoid much more trouble than if you dawdle), but overall, this is a game worth checking out.

The reason why Red Faction exists is the fact that we love to break stuff. A thing that this game does best. And it doesn't feel old after a couple of hours, because you can always choose a different way of playing. The boring story, somewhat dull surroundings, and few graphic hiccups won't change that. Like it's predecessors the gameplay in Red Faction: Guerilla is heavily focused on the destructible environments, this time focusing on the environments rather that the geography. And smashing your way through the game is pure entertainment - despite some bugs and odd sudden deaths. Red Faction: Guerrilla is a weird game. It is just a common action-game boosted by a pivotal feature about realistic demolitions which makes it more funny and intriguing than your average game despite its mediocre visuals and sounds. An excellent and deep multiplayer mode gives Guerrilla the edge. Recommended to whoever needs a game where everything - really everything - can be destroyed to bits.

A decent game, but it feels like the developers invested too heavily in the physic-based destruction and neglected to create a well-rounded experience that could contend with the likes of its own "Saints Row." [Aug 2009, p.70]

70

Telegraph

The game's chief appeal really is wrapped up in Alec Mason's capacity for devastation and whether or not the endless opportunities to cause widespread mayhem (albeit in a good cause) are worth slogging through some of the game's drawbacks is down to the appetite for destruction of each individual player. Those who demand in-depth plots, revolutionary gameplay and a twist around every corner won't have much use for Red Faction: Guerrilla. But if you enjoy blowing things up, this well may be one of the best video games ever made.

What Our Users Said

Mike S gave it an8:
Despite a few minor glitches such as invisible walls and the likes, RFG Still manages to be a great game an excellent Destruction engine and Physics.

James D gave it an8:
On the surface RFG might just be a run of the mill sandbox in the way of mercenaries 2 but I think it has a grander scale of destruction than World in Flames. One thing RFG nails is the destruction and deformation of buildings, they are an obsession to wreck with a vehicle or with grenades. Their are odd glitces but they are still masses of fun to blow to pieces. Mars however is one repetitive place, as such it can get a little boring to overlook the degraded red planet over and over. The game is tough as nails and can get really frustrating but it requires a lot of strategy. So Red Faction Guerilla is excellent but borders on repetition a lot. If you like your sandbox's filled with variety in terms of environments and missions you will not find it. However if you like to blow things up endlessy don't think twice about enduring it.

J. S. gave it a9:
What a great game. Decent storyline, great premise. Love the building destruction, but it could have used a better engine. Very fun, innovative. The multiplayer sells this game. One of the only good PS3 Multiplayer games. There's so much variety and ranking up to do. This game wouln't get old anytime soon.

EI gave it a5:
I expected Red Faction 3, but got GTA on Mars. In RF you could drive ground vehicles, submarines and flyers. You had destructible terrain. In RF:Guerilla you only can drive various ground vehicles and there is no destructible terrain. It feels like there is no real geomod in this game! What about destructible buildings, you ask? The are not terrain. Many games even 15 years ago had objects you could damage and destroy. CPUs got faster, and in this game we have whole buildings made of foot-sized chunks linked together in quire unrealistic way. I could frequently see whole building or bridge supported by a single inch thick beam. This is step back from first game in series. And we had several shooter games more than ten years old where you could permanently dig holes in heightmap landscape, similar to one we can see in RF:Guerrilla. You can only destroy buildings but, if necessary, they reappear, and there is nothing else you can really do in the game. Generally I agree with another 5-point review, this game isn't in fact too big and its length is created artificially, forcing you to take very similar side missions over and over again. Story progression is strictly linear. First and last few hours are really fun, but everything between is just a boring and frustrating waste of time.

Khalil B gave it a9:
General: This game is just insane. I mean, there's no other game out there that can let you destroy EVERYTHING. Any little object you see can be destroyed to little pieces of rubble. This is the best game out so far this year, in my opinion. Online: The multi-player is pretty fun and the six different modes are enough. There's 21 total maps to play. Also in multi-player you can choose who you want to be, you also have customization to a certain extent of course, I mean there isn't a full customization on characters but you get to choose which character you would like to play as after unlocking them and with which hammer you would like to start off with after also unlocking. It shows all of your stats for the most part which some game lack and it also has some challenges that you can try to do. Even if most of them show as hidden you can sometimes figure it out. Wrecking Mode: Then there is also Wrecking Crew Mode, I mean, there is nothing more fun then to play with my brothers, for me, or friends and just smash as much as you can to get the most points. This is always fun, they should maybe have some type of DLC to put it for online. Single-Player The graphics in the cut scenes are great. The story itself wasn't the greatest, but it'll do. Even though it was short and I would have liked to have seen more cut scenes and with some action, I mean none of the cut scenes had some real action which it lacked, but besides that, Single-Player was fine with me. Also one thing that I really appreciated is that you can continue to play Single-Player even after you finish the Story mode unlike in some other games, so that's a plus. There's is a lot more to do then what you first think. You can try to mine all the ores, find all radio tags, do all of the guerrilla actions, or just destroy everything if you really don't care.

SamIr gave it a7:
My opinion is a bit divided for this game. On hand it's a fun sandbox game with some great story missions but on the other hand it is a game with bad AI for the NPCs(bad AI for NPCs isn't a bad thing in most games but it's bad for this game because of the morale system) and uninteresting story. I'm giving this a 7/10 because I've been able to enjoy many of the story missions, such as the rallying of the civilians in the Dust sector against the EDF and the amount of detail to every structure and vehicles by the developers. Being able to destroy every building in is a great feature. Very realistic.

Jonah S gave it an8:
Pretty fun for a while. The game mechanic is exciting, and player freedom to destroy ANY structure you see is as liberating from a gamer standpoint as it is innovative. I just wish there was more to the story, and a little bit more variety in missions. What little I have played of MP so far seems kinda fun.
