Summary
SKATE delivers the feel of skating through innovative controls, authentic cameras and a fully reactive skateboarding city. The game features professional skaters such as Danny Way and PJ Ladd, as well as a reactive city and relevant in-game cameras. SKATE's unique control scheme captures the true feel of skating versus the typical button mashing gameplay of past skating games. Featuring physics-driven animations, gamers will have a unique gaming experience every time they pick up the controller since no two tricks will ever be the same. [Electronic Arts]

With its organic controls, beautiful visuals and amazing presentation, it quickly becomes an addicting experience that's tough to stop playing, even during some of the most frustrating parts of the game.

If you demand a game hold your hand, this might not be truly essential, but if you're seeking the ultimate toy set to flex your imagination, Skate is the perfect way of letting go.

A technical masterpiece of a skateboarding game. It dumps the superhero antics of the Tony Hawk series and goes back to what it is all about: a man and his board. With the innovative controls and the great old-fashioned fun the player will have, Skate is sure to set a new standard for extreme games for years to come. [Oct 2007]
Playstation Official Magazine UK
Makes the sport feel like it should: sometimes laconic, often dangerous and always, really, really hard. Which, of course, is what makes it such fun. [Nov 2007, p.96]
PSM Magazine
A stunningly realistic simulation, Skate is a deep, eloquent, and completely free-form experience. [Nov 2007, p.80]
Eurogamer
Punishingly difficult but ultimately rewarding, games of Skate's caliber are a rare breed and as far as first attempts go, it's been years since we saw one this accomplished. Just... sick, man.

[An] incredibly fresh and successful take on skating controls, as well as a wide-open city with six-player online options (we liked the Deathraces and the Spot Battles). Skate is logical, authentic, and blissfully organic. Robots need not apply.

Not only are the controls and attributes of the gameplay itself consistently representative of the chosen sport, but everything from the gloriously dynamic soundtrack and the competition commentary through to the selection of legendry skaters and the division of challenges into schools of skating hits the nail on the head with prowess.

Built around utterly convincing physics and animation systems and a unique control scheme that's equal parts challenge and reward, it manages to be realistic without being discouraging and feels completely different from not only the competition, but from anything else out there.

While Skate has some small flaws (it would have been a good idea to make your skater translucent whenever he blocks something important on screen), it is rare to find a game that comes so close to doing everything right.

Makes skating feel like it should: often dangerous, and always really, really hard. [Nov 2007, p.118]

The controls feel fluid, and show people that you don't need to force gimmicks on us to make it feel real.

This approach to skating is a real breath of fresh air, when compared to the over-iterated world of the Tony Hawk franchise.

These controls feel great, and they really need to since the game isn’t in the slightest bit forgiving. When you go for a grind, you won’t magically be transported onto the rail. You have to line it up and pray that you time your jump and adjoining trick correctly.

As a brand new IP, based on an idea that could have completely blown up in EA's face, skate is an amazingly complete experience. Those who choose to relax and skate leisurely -- looking for cool lines and taking on the occasional challenge -- will likely find the most enjoyment.

This is as close to a proper skateboarding simulation as we’ve seen, and is up there in the fun stakes with the best of the x-sports games, but for added realism we’d like to see fewer loading screens, civilians that behave with a mote of intelligence or self preservation and even the ability to get off and walk once in a while.

A fun, addictive skateboarding game that's just a little camera work and a few control refinements short of stardom.

A few kinks in the frame rate and issues with an otherwise-clever and well-executed control system aren't enough to significantly dampen our enthusiasm for Skate. "Tony Hawk's" watch out: this new skater has some sick moves. [Issue#159, p.84]
Game Over Online
If you are a skating fan, it will be a game worthy of your cash. Even if you are not a fan, you just might find yourself having a blast ollieing all over the joint with a rental.

If you attempt to plow through the goals you’re going to come across a few of them that will get your blood boiling, and there’s an incredibly steep learning curve to overcome. But if you just want to cruise around popping ollies and laying down grinds, or session a spot to squeeze every last line out of it, it’s easily the most realistic representation of the sport yet.

A beautiful-looking and great-playing game with a bright future ahead of it. This first effort is a worthy effort for any skating fans, though a little more design compression, some smarter level design, and a little more direction would have been nice.

Skate’s best trick is to make every landing seem like a tiny victory: with physics that at least pay lip service to the realities of gravity and broken bones, simply making it down a flight of steps can be cause for celebration. [Nov 2007, p.92]
GamePro
I think gamers who are hungry for skating but tired of Tony Hawk should give this title a try. There are plenty of similarities, but I think the actual gameplay is unique and enjoyable and will appeal to many.

In a funny way it may turn out that the Tony Hawk's games needed the arrival of skate as much as skate needed the existence of Tony Hawk's to make it what it is - the new home of skateboarding, at least for the time being.

Not content with surpassing Tony Hawk with the first attempt, skate. smashes his board in two and promises the next ten years will be a little different. Providing the antidote to too many years of unimaginative Tony Hawk's sequels, skate's debut marks an overwhelming success of innovation, style, and fun.

EA has released an innovative product that both fans of skateboarding games and actual skateboarders will enjoy quite a bit. But I can't really recommend the PlayStation 3 version as an all-out purchase, largely thanks to its framerate issues.

The difficulty will undoubtedly polarize, but as something unique, Skate is more than welcome. [Nov 2007, p.108]
GameSpot
Skate's analog trick system is revolutionary for the genre, but the game surrounding those mechanics isn't quite as good.

A solid first effort and actually makes me look forward to a sequel. I really hope they can mess around with the control scheme a bit next time to allow for more versatility in your trick making so you can be more creative on the pavement.
The PS3 version isn't as smooth as the 360 version, which is a shame, and there's a hell of a difficulty curve but if you're willing to put the effort in there's a decent enough simulation-ish game here as an alternative to Activision's more arcade-like Hawk series.

A technically strong game tailored to hardcore skaters (and people up for a really serious challenge), this one will alienate casual gamers, as the learning curve can be excruciating.

Jonathan L. gave it a9:
King of innovation for the sports genre. Skate is an experience that skateboarders and sports fans alike can fall in love with. The gameplay never gets dry and the single-player campaign takes about 20-hours to finish. A huge landscape filled with a variety of objects to try your best on and a multi-player make this a game that lasts a long time. The only things holding the game back are multi-player lag and framerate drops.
Matt L. gave it a10:
This game beats tony hawks by far. It takes time to learn the tricks instead of 5 mins. Some of the challenges are insane but it all is worth it in the end.And video/screenshots is a nice addition .One of my favorite games of all time.
Michel S. gave it a10:
The best version for the game: the PS3! It has better floor textures than the 360 version.
Mas J. gave it an8:
Fun for 10 hours or so experimenting on tricks around the city. Graphics and physics are great. If you think a trick should be possible, it probably is thanks to very detailed modelling of surfaces. Instant replay of great tricks is fun to watch. Once the thrill of landing a great trick wears off, there isn't much to keep it from being a trade-in.
Rickard H. gave it a9:
A nice refresh of the Skate genre after playing alot of Tony Hawk's games. They are also good but this sets a new standard!
Anker gave it a10:
This is my second favorite game on the PS3 right now... behind Call of Duty 4... duh. But this is even more accessible at times than CoD4. It's a great game, even after owning it since the day it came out, to pick up and play for at least an hour or two. The story is good, not great... but that's not why you should buy it. You should buy it because it's one of the most fun games I've ever played. Period.
S G gave it a9:
This game is awesome! I had never played a skateboarding game before this and only downloaded the demo on a whim. It hooked me immediately and after it was released I've found it hard to play anything else. As someone new to the genre, I found the controls incredible intuitive with the 'right-stick' 'flick-it' actions. To people also unfamiliar with this genre, if a big part of your enjoyment of the GTA games was finding interesting places to jump your motorcycles and cars, then you'll LOVE this game. The city is full of challenging and crazy fun areas just begging to be jumped, ground, or bailed over. At the very least, download the demo. You won't be disappointed. The only element I wish they could've added was 'walking'. Sometimes you'll wish you could just walk up a set of stairs.
