Game Informer
In the end, Sonic nuts will love it. Everyone else should stay away.
Pelit (Finland)
The 3D elements do not gel well, and controlling Sonic feels awkward and hasty. Sudden deaths are far too common for a modern game. Old school (un)playability does not work this time. [Feb 2007]
Games Master UK
Some good ideas and lush graphics marred by bad game design. [Apr 2007, p.66]
Play UK
A crushing disappointment for those who thought Sonic had finally found his feed in 3D. Uncontrollable, twitchy, awkward and confused, this game will kill off all hope of there being another decent Sonic outing ever again. [Issue # 149, p.66]
PSM3 Magazine UK
It is worth a rent, however, just to savour the few good bits, laugh at all the glitches... and to start crying when you remember what Sonic games used to be like in the '90s. Sob.

If you're willing to withstand the constant onslaught of glaring issues regarding the control, you might be able to revel in some of those aforementioned highlights, but it won't last. In the end, you'll find yourself wishing for the good ol' 16-bit days.

Sonic the Hedgehog is a mess. While there are a few glimmers of hope early on when players take control of Silver and his cool telekinesis ability, it's quickly realized that the game's design never really capitalizes on it.

Sonic the Hedgehog may share its name with the Genesis original, but this game is even more broken than most of the other recent Sonic games have been.
Wrought with visual glitches and pre-existing issues with poor camera angles, the mixture of zippy running missions grows tedious at near-Sonic speed, with limited control and boring exploration sequences. This one hits a brick wall, for sure.

Every installment has us hoping for a return to glory, but each one further craps on the hedgehog's legacy. The redeeming qualities here are few and far between, and it's just plain not fun.

Thanks in part to an atrocious camera, extremely dislikeable characters and a handful of amazingly frustrating sticking points, all this iteration of Sonic The Hedgehog manages to achieve is a yearning for the old days. [Apr 2007, p.129]
Pure Magazine UK
Possibly the lowest point in Sonic gaming, sloppy camera and terrible level design let this down badly. [Mar 2007, p.53]
Playstation Official Magazine UK
The most muddled and irritating Sonic game yet. [May 2007, p.110]
VideoGamer
Sonic has been on a slippery slope for years and SEGA has done nothing about it, and this has culminated in what can only be described as a complete disaster.

In short, the game is simply awful--though, to be fair, at least the FMVs are decent. [Apr 2007, p.88]
The Onion (A.V. Club)
Some scenes take so long to load up that they induce nostalgia for the days of tape drives and 300-baud modems. Glitches and a jittery camera don't make the game unplayable—just profoundly unpalatable.

Not only are the voices horrible, as is the case for most Sonic games, but the story makes very little sense. Its like if you took any basic Nintendo story like Mario saving the Princess, lengthened it to several hours long, and filled it with mindless details that make no logical sense at all.

Remi F. gave it a0:
Worst PS3 game I ever played! The game is full of bad controls, massive slowdowns,suicide-inducing cameras and tons of glitches. I can't believe this is Sonic. Wasn't this supposed to be a good series? Avoid at all cost!
Joseph E. gave it a10:
The game it self is very good. the story line for the first time is great. the idea of the futue and the past meet the present is very simialar to Chrono Trigger in the idea only but it is the best sonic game to date based on grapics and gameplay :) Go sonic Go!!!
Sorcerer 289 gave it a0:
Damn sega for destroying my favorite game series.
Alan D. gave it a1:
When you finally get to a level, you spend about %20 of the time controlling the character, and the rest of the time just watching sonic bounce off springs and go through loops. the only way to really attack is just pushing jump over and over again. Sega should have put their dev dollars into a 2D game with improved physics. Just because you can do 3D doesn't meen you always should.
Ben D. gave it a3:
If you want a Sonic game that's actually GOOD, there are several options: 1) dust off your Sega Genesis and fire up Sonic 1 or 2, 2) dust off your Dreamcast and fire up Sonic Adventure, or 3) get Sonic and the Secret Rings for the Wii. Sure, all three options involve neglecting your 360 or PS3, but it's better than TORTURING them with this piece of garbage.
Seth S. gave it an8:
Attention anyone who is wanting to play this game. Dont listen to critics. never listen to critics, or the idiots who are saying this game sucks. My favorite game monster hunter got like a 5.1 overall, because noone plays it all the way. And just for the record, why is everyone downing all the new sonic games? Sonic Adventure battle 2 is awesome! now don't get me wrong this game has many some flaws, lots of loading, mindless missions on the street that have nothing to do with the story. So those of you who just love making fun of sonic, go ahead, but my fellow sonic fans, this one isn't half bad.
Thomas K. gave it a0:
You know, guys, there's more than one meaning of the word "load" that could be used to describe this game. Permit me to explain... 1) Load (transitive verb): to take ages to read data from the disc i.e. Sonic The Hedgehog. 2) Load (colloquial): crapload of errors with a product i.e. Sonic The Hedgehog. 3) Load (adjective): a load of crap i.e. Sonic The Hedgehog.
