Summary
Turok is an epic, story-driven FPS game set on a dark, mysterious planet in the near future. Players take on the role of Joseph Turok, a former Black Ops commando, now part of an elite Special Forces squad on a mission to take down a war criminal on a genetically-altered planet. After the ship is shot down while approaching the planet, Joseph Turok must use his instincts and elite military training to elude an army of well-trained soldiers, and the ravenous, unpredictable creatures that populate the dangerous environment. Joseph Turok’s mission? Survive at all costs. [Touchstone]

Play Magazine
Even with a weak script, Turok's flexible play mechanics, strong level designs, and high production values make the story mode alone worth the price of admission. [Jan 2008, p.49]
Worth Playing
If you're after a challenging, graphically attractive, pure-action shooter that's a lot of fun in single-player, also blessed of long legs in the online multiplayer department, Turok is your sort of gig. A cinematic experience this is not; expect this sort of "ambitious" or "high art" game, and you'll be disappointed.

It doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel, but working within its accepted elements it does a great job of dumping you in the jungle and making you feel like you’re fighting for your life.

While Turok's adventure doesn't write the next great chapter in first-person action gameplay, it's a thoroughly solid, entertaining, thoughtfully-designed, and well-paced shooter. [Mar 2008, p.80]
Gaming Target
Turok has a lot going for it in the next-generation, more than it did in the last generation with Turok: Evolution.

The atmosphere pulls you into the experience thanks to fantastic dinosaurs and great sound, being given the choice between straight-up gunning and stealth is most appreciated (the bow rules!), and the efforts made for accurate momentum physics don't go unnoticed. All of this means the positives outweigh the negatives by a large amount.

If you're tired of killing zombies, soldiers, and aliens-- or zombified alien soldiers--then you'll appreciate dealing Turok's brand of Jurassic justice. Just be prepared for a level of difficulty that'll have you restarting at the same checkpoints more times than you can shake a fossilized stick at.

Turok’s reinvention comes out with a positive balance. Those who are able to overlook the clichéd setting and the B movie side of things will enjoy an interesting and capable FPS, far from ground-breaking, but with some good moments.

While the game really doesn’t introduce anything we haven’t already seen in a shooter, the dinosaur-filled world and the intriguing story of revenge are enough to keep this game from being a bore.

The single player campaign is a solid romp that will appease most shooter fans. But like I mentioned earlier there are frustrating moments throughout.

Unfortunately, this first-person shooter revived from the N64 title doesn’t live up to the status of the original hit.

The new and improved Turok is easily the best since it left its roots on the Nintendo 64. Even though the title takes great liberties with some of the lore it manages to retain its integrity while at the same time delivering on a completely over the top albeit predictable experience.

So while this Turok may not be of the same quality of Turok: Dinosaur Hunter on the Nintendo 64, but it will leave you will an enjoyable experience. Still, dinosaur throat-slitting can only go so far, and that along with some other cool features isn’t enough to warrant a definitive purchase.

Turok might not be the best FPS on the market, but it is definitely playable and enjoyable as long as you are willing to put up with some wonky controls and often-unfair enemy AI.

Turok manages to revive the ailing franchise. The dinosaurs look awesome and fighting them is just as cool.

A decent shooter, but fails to capture the series' classic feel due to a lack of fresh ideas. [Feb 2008, p.68]
IGN
There's no doubt that Turok can be fun, but ultimately, the feeling of satisfaction that comes with slitting a raptor's throat or pulling off a headshot with your bow is lost in the shuffle of swarming enemies, less than stellar visuals and a story that disappears.

If you’ve enjoyed the previous Turok adventures, you can still find something interesting in this game. Besides fighting dinosaurs with a bow and knife, it’s standard routine stuff, including the set, the human enemy AI and the story. [Feb 2008]
Game Informer
Poorly spaced checkpoints, dank too-similar environments, and magical teleporting allies are a few other annoying and strange traits that cause this game to fall down a few notches.

The gameplay itself represents a disciplined FPS effort that lifts it above recent mediocre titles such as Blacksite: Area 51, though it doesn't hold a candle to the big guns of The Orange Box, BioShock, or Call of Duty 4.
All the elements that make a decent console shooter are present in Turok: the sound, the gameplay, the weird and wonderful weaponry. They're all polished, but none of them are shining and the result is a shooter that should have been classic but is missing that vital spark that transforms a shooter from a bit of fun to a compelling and addictive experience.

Like the mindless Hollywood blockbusters that it emulates, Turok features plenty of dinosaur-hunting action and not too much else.

Deciding whether to fend off those carnivorous foes or sic 'em on your human enemies adds a teensy bit of strategy to the otherwise typical run, gun, and reload approach. [Mar 2008, p.81]
GamingTrend
The thing that sucks is that you really don’t have much of an idea what is going with Turok or the enemy you are fighting against.

No, it's not going to go head-to-head with the onslaught of great FPSes we saw at the end of last year (though its slick, well-designed, robust multiplayer should give it some legs). But the unusual premise, solid writing, and nicely varied play make it worth a look for shooter fans looking for that next fix.

Sadly, a fun game gets annoying due to omniscient AI and nebulous level design.

Turok is one of those games that has the potential of greatness on the Playstation 3. However even with the potential, you have to capitalize on it, and this is not a game that does that.

Unfortunately, what aim-assist there is in Turok is woefully inadequate. Getting the reticule to move that last quarter inch often proved impossible and aggravating.
The developers do a crappy job filling in the story's gaps, and much of the gameplay relies on trial and error, which leads to tons of unnecessary deaths.

A little good, a little bad, and an occasional flash of atmospheric design. [Mar 2008, p.106]
Eurogamer
Turok is at its best when you slow down and make use of your surroundings and arsenal. The reason it loses so many points is that it can be at its absolute worst ten seconds later, and that while its lows are paralysingly dreadful, its peaks are never much more than competent, or fleeting novelties spoilt by cliché, repetition or sloppiness.
The sad fact is that this combat mostly fails to ignite interest, and combined with its cruel difficulty spikes, occasional glitches and a severe differential in graphical quality between 360 and PS3 versions (the latter losing out), Turok's strong contextualisation and smattering of brave ideas get buried. [Mar 2008, p.92]
Gamer.nl
At first, Turok places the player in a game with impressive atmosphere and basic but satisfying shoot-out moments. After cutting through another of those dinosaurs though, the feeling of repetition starts to kick in. In the end, the game restricts the player too much.
Even playing on the easiest setting, the difficulty regularly spikes to bowel-clenching impossibility. This wouldn't be so bad if the checkpoints flowed a little more freely, as most of the difficulty spikes tend to arrive after a protracted battle has already left you tattered and bleeding.
The edgy style, giant boss battles, big guns, and third-person dino-mauling bits certainly show that Propaganda Games have a lot of respect for what the franchise has meant to its fans, but at the same time it seems they either played it too safe or didn't let it sit in the oven long enough.

A hollow, morbidly generic, barely functional game. [Issue#163, p.84]

Clichéd, generic, bland, boring and infuriating. [Mar 2008, p.120]
