Summary

With Virtua Tennis 3, the series returns with enhanced photo-realistic graphics and advanced player animations that perfectly match the behavior and mannerisms of individual professional athletes. In Career Mode, gamers travel the world and take on the biggest stars of the tennis world. Improvements to the Player Creation Mode allow gamers to customize their own tennis star with a wealth of licensed tennis equipment and increased detail. No Virtua Tennis title would be complete without the popular and addictive mini-games, and Virtua Tennis 3 is no exception. In addition to the popular mini-games from previous titles used to sharpen players' skills, there are a host of brand new games to keep players in top form. [Sega]

Play.tm

Although past versions of Virtua Tennis have always exhibited a finely tuned but "arcadey" feel, VT3 is a full bodied simulation. This new outing from Sega AM3's ever appealing sports series is a deeper, more demanding and serious beast than ever before and yet easily manages to maintain the 'fun' factor that is synonymous with the series.

It might not be online, but if you have three friends, who really cares? [Issue #151, p.68]

Pure Magazine UK

When a game is this well presented, fluid to play and with such a well-balanced learning curve enabling anyone to pick up and play in just a few seconds, even those not that keen on tennis can't help but appreciate such finesse. [Mar 2007, p.47]

Worth Playing

It has a great atmosphere and is extremely easy to pick up.

VT3 is pure, unadulterated genius. It was everyone's favourite Dreamcast game for a good reason.

Pelit (Finland)

A fun tennis game, but it is too bad that it does not have internet play. Otherwise it is right up there with the more serious "Top Spin 2." [Mar 2007]

GameTrailers

It’s basically the same game we’ve been playing for the past five or six years, but it’s received a nice visual upgrade and it’s hard to knock a game too much for repeating such a consistently enjoyable performance.

GamePro

An outstandingly well-made game. Its technically impressive visuals, easy to learn but hard to master gameplay, and great selection of mini-games makes Virtua Tennis 3 an ace.

Just as good as we all remember it, basically because nothing much has changed. [Apr 2007, p.58]

85

PSM3 Magazine UK

No giant leap for the series, but enough improvements to be a must-buy for VT fans...Our only major complaint is the absence of online play. [Mar 2007, p.66]

Jolt Online Gaming UK

While Virtua Tennis 3 is undoubtedly a relatively mild updating of what has gone before, which is particularly surprising when the length of time that’s passed since the last full instalment is considered, it still manages to convincingly retain its crown as the king of the tennis roost.

PSM Magazine

Sure, it doesn't do anything really new, but it doesn't have to: it's just a lot of fun, and that's more than enough reason to recommend it. [May 2007, p.76]

Gaming Age

The Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 versions are nearly identical, particularly in appearance – the graphics appear to be pretty much the same. But there is one very important difference: The PS3 version does not support online play of any kind.

GameSpot

Virtua Tennis 3 is a great game that holds true to that winning formula. There are some new minigames, and the career mode has been fleshed out, but it's clear that the developers were focused on refining the gameplay rather than reinventing it.

GameSpy

What it boils down to is that if your TV has 1080p support and you don't mind the absence of online support, the PlayStation 3 version is the way to go. However, if you tend to run things in 720p, and you want to check out some decent online play, the Xbox 360 version wins out.

Without a doubt, the best tennis game you can get your hands on at the moment. If only it came with a set of sweat bands.

Edge Magazine

This new outing for Sega’s ever-appealing sports series is a deeper, more serious and demanding beast than before, yet happily manages to retain the series’ lighthearted atmosphere and is, on occasion, utterly bonkers. [Apr 2007, p.84]

80

GameDaily

Microsoft fans win the console pissing contest by default, thanks to Xbox Live. The 360 includes online play. The PlayStation 3 version doesn't, a puzzling decision that gives Sony's opponents one more thing to complain about.

Playstation Official Magazine UK

The multiplayer stuff is so good that without it, the game simply wouldn't be as enjoyable. World Tour is immensely entertaining, but played solo it eventually becomes a slightly lonely, hollow experience. [Apr 2007, p.98]

VideoGamer

The game is as close to Pong as the London Philharmonic Orchestra is to a caveman banging a rudimentary drum and, continuing that analogy, Virtua Tennis 3 is just as primal and instinctive as its most ancient of relatives.

If you want a taste of the same old Virtua Tennis or have yet to experience the best Tennis game mechanics ever created, then youll be fine with VT3. Although if youre a veteran of the series this is a rental at best. [JPN Import]

PSX Extreme

Falls a little shy of what we had expected, but it still delivers a solid tennis experience. It remains far too easy on just about every level, and that's not helped by the erratic difficulty in those silly challenges, which are over-emphasized throughout the first few hours of play.

PALGN

Our main complaint with Virtua Tennis 3 is the fact that Sega are happy to sit on their laurels and release a game that is very similar to its predecessor. However, they say that if it isn't broke then don't fix it, and Virtua Tennis 3 is definitely not broke.

A fast, frantic, and high-octane style of tennis. If this sounds like fun then you will feel right at home. Anyone looking for a more realistic approach will want to find another source.

This game needed online play. I've already spent a bazillion hours with the first two games, and what would have made this feel truly fresh would have been playing against other vets. Consider me bummed.

All in all, Virtua Tennis 3 is an easy to play and visually attractive title. [May 2007, p.56]

The Onion (A.V. Club)

For those with fragile egos who also like jumping rope without the rope, this is a perfect game, as you'll rarely hit the ball out. But hardcore tennis fans should stick with Top Spin 2.

Game Informer

Virtua Tennis 3 is a perfectly serviceable tennis game (pun intended) that fails to provide a big enough splash to make it anything else than just another tennis title. Next time I hope it won’t take Sega seven years to come out with the same game.

Despite Virtua Tennis 3's crisp visuals and handful of new animations, it still feels like the original. [Apr 2007, p.127]

The game is surprisingly fun for a non-tennis fan, but it's overly simple at times. It's worth a try for most gamers, though, as it provides at least a few hours of entertainment.

1UP

In the end, the sharp graphics trump the competition (2K Sports' "Top Spin 2"), but the oversights in gameplay and the pros-only career mode hold Virtua Tennis back from being a must-play. For a quick knock-around with friends, this can't be beat, but for a deeper, more authentic tennis experience, go with "Top Spin 2."

Leon L. gave it a10:
One of the best sport game. There is nothing Wii sport Tennis can compete with this game. Re-play value is high. It is one of the games I'm highly recommended to keep.

Sand SpiderII gave it a7:
This game isn't a game that you get hooked on for months. It's a filler for when you need a break from other games.

O. M. gave it a10:
3 minutes VT3 is like 3 hours in real life - Wow! Cool Gameplay, cool atmosphere, cool graphics.

Kevin M. gave it a7:
I'd agree with 1up on this one - diving is a pain, rallies are too long, net play isn't efficient, and there are 'should have been winners' galore. Fun, realistic looking (movements are amazing, mimmicks the players almost exactly) but the game isn't sharp enough. I'll stick with Mario tennis for GC.

Toni gave it a10:
Seems better than Top Spin, great game.
