Summary

[Dowloadable Game] In Warhawk, players experience the thrill of white-knuckle aerial combat with hundreds of enemy fighters, bone-crunching armored assaults and high-intensity infantry combat in a massive, all-out war fought both on the ground and in the skies. During gameplay, players are tasked with protecting their homeland from the invading Chernovan armada. By doing so, players take command of the most advanced war machine in the fleet, the Warhawk, capable of aerobatic dogfights at high speeds or hovering over ground troops providing tactical support. Players continue the battle on foot with an arsenal of weaponry including pistols, rifles, grenades and more. Furthermore, players can gain access to an array of ground vehicles and lay waste with powerful weapons mounted on jeeps, tanks and specialty transports. Fight on Foot, in Ground Vehicles, or in the Sky – Next-gen multimodal design throws players into a deep gameplay experience. Fight in the war as a foot soldier, vehicle driver or ace pilot - whenever you want. Experience an Expansive Online Community – Players can join in epic multi-modal 32-person online battles, constantly evolving with downloadable content and a variety of online game modes. [SCEA]

At $40 for the PSN file, it may be the most expensive downloadable game you buy, but it’s currently the best online multiplayer title to hit PS3.

In the end the company has created an excellent game with good graphics, great controls that you can change, and one that runs smoothly even with 32 people playing at once. Warhawk is truly a benchmark for the PS3 and easily one of the best games in its lineup.

Worth Playing

Perhaps the highest praise I can give the title is that despite Sony's concerns with overpricing a multiplayer-only game, Warhawk, lacking all single-player capabilities, is worth every bit of the full price for games of this console generation.

I'm taking a big risk rating the game as high as it is right now, and if for some reason things aren't worked out in the next week or two, this score is going to drop like a rock, but when the game works, it's absolutely amazing. Here's hoping makes it.

Warhawk is simple and tight net combat game. There is only five maps, which sounds bad, but the levels are huge. Everything works just fine and flying with awesome planes is sooooo fun. [Nov 2007]

It may be multiplayer only, it may not have bots, and it may have a steep learning curve, but Warhawk lives up to its billing: a AAA experience that is an adrenaline rush for online fans. Large worlds, balanced combat mechanics and impressively deep server mechanics help this fast paced game soar.

A remarkable addition to the Network roster, Warhawk is probably the most fun we've had with our PS3s yet. That said, some of the gameplay is uneven, but the dogfighting alone should sell this to you. It's a joy. [Issue#157, p.78]

At its best, Warhawk delivers constant thrills through exciting team-based action that’ll have you coming back for more if only to rank up to the next level in your leaderboard standings. At its worst, Warhawk will disappoint because you’ll never really get a good context or sense of the world around you, since there really aren’t any plot or characters to deliver those elements.

But if you are happy to play the game online all of the time and don’t mind an initially steep learning curve, Warhawk actually proves to be an enjoyable and engaging game; it’s arcade leanings making up for a slight lack of sophistication, and an impressive sense of scale making up for the lack of visual ‘wow’ factor. Overall, a surprise hit.

Warhawk is an excellent example of a multiplayer-centric game that almost anyone can get into. There is nothing complicated or revolutionary in the design, but the mix of combat styles, large maps, great controls, and a ready supply of players more than make up for the lack of originality.

It's fun enough, but even with the headset, it's too expensive for a game that you cannot play by yourself, and its balancing issues severely limit what you can do in the game. [Oct 2007, p.77]

This game has recieved the most play time of any game that has ever spun in my blu ray drive.. Roughly 800 hours and counting. Its been two years and I'm still playing which is a testament to how addictive this game is. There is a very steep learning curve but once you start to master the many elements within the game it really opens up and becomes an obsession... You will know what I mean the first time you see your psn id on the leaderboard...

Tyler K gave it a10:
I love this game...Easily the best online 3rd person shooter available for the PS3. I would even say that Warhawk even beats Call of Duty in some aspects. Great game!

Jason K. gave it a10:
Better than any other shooter multi-player out there (& I'm in my 30's), and still going strong in 2009! The game is cheap to buy, or try the demo and see the incredibly deep gameplay, beautiful rock/paper/scissors balance, amazing flexibility & creativity, great variety on land or in the air, giant maps, furious action...it's addictive perfection. The learning curve is a little steep, so for resources, tips, & help, checkout warhawk.wikia.com

Frank Bassham gave it a9:
Warhawk has given me more moments of online fun than any other game this generation. Huge levels, balanced play, and spectacular fun. This game has caused more of my friends to want PS3s than any other game I've showed them, including The Case of the Drunk in the Doghouse, in which an inebriated friend called his wife and told her he'd be home later with his new PS3 and Warhawk, Hilarity ensued. I would rather rate this a 9.5 or so.

Jake M. gave it a10:
First of all, to those who would diss the graphics.. remember that it was made two years ago, and was one of the first major online PSN games. If you are having the troubles "This Game Sucks" had, then why not try playing on a smaller map? ;) Another note on the graphics: they work very well. I mean, imagine if the went for hyper-realistic, as in Call of Duty. I just can't picture and F-16 in this game, because it doesn't fit. It's got graphics that go perfectly with the game. The balance of battles is perfect. Air superiority is a must, just like real battles. Good soldiers is a must, again very real. Also, to those who would try to compare it to Halo or COD... don't. That's like comparing... well, and XBOX and PS3. They're just different.

lycan7hropy s gave it an8:
the best reason to own a PS3 during its first year and still holds up as of june 09. the visuals and sound are nice but not alot of players play with the expansion packs. still, for $20 for the main game its worth it if you have alot of time to learn.....its not very noob friendly is this game. still, there is really nothing like it right now and yet another reason i prefer sony's big black ugly system.

Joe B gave it a10:
"This game sucks" dont blame the game for you being crap, this game is one of the best online shooters out there and for £15 its a steal, reccomended to all
