Summary

[Playstation Network] The episodic videogame based on the Watchmen film is a mature action-brawler, which delves into the past of characters from the film and adds new challenges and rivalries for players. The game provides gamers with visceral superhero combat as urban vigilantes Rorschach and Nite Owl. A complex, multi-layered mystery adventure, the film "Watchmen" is set in an 1985 America in which costumed superheroes are part of the fabric of everyday society, and the "Doomsday Clock" – which charts the USA's tension with the Soviet Union – is permanently set at five minutes to midnight. When one of his former colleagues is murdered, the washed up but no less determined masked vigilante Rorschach sets out to uncover a plot to kill and discredit all past and present superheroes. As he reconnects with his former crime-fighting legion – a ragtag group of retired superheroes, only one of whom has true powers – Rorschach glimpses a wide-ranging and disturbing conspiracy with links to their shared past and catastrophic consequences for the future. Their mission is to watch over humanity . . . but who is watching the Watchmen? [Warner Bros. Interactive]

So, is Watchmen worth your hard-earned cash? I'm going to have to give a resounding "yes" to this expertly crafted beat-em-up. Even with its' shortcomings Watchmen always feels fresh, and really stands apart as a downloadable title.

Even with the seemingly high price of $20 for a downloadable game any Watchmen fan or fan of old arcade beat-em ups should consider this well worth their money.

The real surprise was the final level against Underboss, where you chase him up an under construction building with crews of underlings coming out the woodwork, packing some nasty hand to hand weaponry, like wrenches, pipes, crowbars and baseball bats.

Vandal Online

If you like classic brawlers, Watchmen is one of the best 3D adaptations of this formula ever made, and the best in recent times. It can become repetitive; in fact it is, what matters is if you like it enough. With a striking technical part because of its price-quality relation, and some very fun features, Watchmen deserves at least a try.

GameFocus

At $20 dollars/1600 MS points, the cost is too high for a roughly 3 hour experience, slightly longer than the film. The story is good and the action is fun, but the repetitive gameplay and lack of replayability make this a really hard game to recommend.

Objectively, this first Watchmen episode is just an average brawler that looks fantastic at times, and has some good voice acting to boot.

The End is Nigh is a good beginning for the Watchmen franchise in videogames, although in the future we should ask them for more. An extra in variety and a deeper AI in the enemies seem necessary, and the presence of more complex puzzles will bring variety to the experience. Nevertheless this is a pleasant but brief Hack and Slash.

The End Is Nigh serves up light beat-'em-up fare with a Watchmen flavor. Those hungry for anything substantial will be disappointed.

Watchmen: The End is Nigh is overall way too short and easy to be considered a good choice for action fans. Hack'n'slash mechanics are too repetitive to deliver enough fan, placing this title way below the Digital Delivery usual standard. Let's hope the next chapters will be developed with more care, for the Watchmen franchise surely deserves better than this.

The lack of Online Co-op mode is a huge loss and, after finishing the game, it remains the idea that The Watchmen might have been better with a solid structure and a some more content.

Thunderbolt

A game that probably shouldn’t have seen the light of day. A brawler is not something you expect to see these characters starring in, but it’s not as bad as you might imagine.

There are Achievements and Trophies to unlock, but more levels and characters (no Silk Spectre II) would've made this something to really watch.

At first glance Watchmen looks like a nice surprise with its beautiful style and delicious combat system. But after a while the repeating level design and gameplay elements will have you thinking otherwise. Nevertheless, we'll be waiting for episode two, because we're convinced that there is light and the end of the tunnel.

Watchmen: The End is Nigh offers a solid foundation with high production values and surprisingly good combat as the first of perhaps many episodes to come, but is it worth sacrificing your Jackson for a chance to slip into Rorschach’s trench coat? The answer is… up to you really.

Worth Playing

Watchmen: The End Is Nigh is a fairly mediocre beat-'em-up made special only by the source material from which it drew its inspiration.

The game nails the atmosphere but fails to implement a single original idea. [May 2009, p.82]

Watchmen: The End is Nigh is not a completely broken game, nor a good game, it's just like an old brawler game like the ones we used to play at the arcade, but it's a little bit short and tedious. However there is no question that breaking bones and killing scum as Rorsharch could be funny and enjoyable side by side with Night Howl II.

As a traditional arcade co-op fighter this one delivers. Anything past this, and you are asking too much from it. The price tag is its own worst enemy.

IGN

Though the very idea of a Watchmen brawler may sicken some, this could have been a good game. Unfortunately, the design lacked any imagination whatsoever. Add Watchmen: The End is Nigh to the long list of movie-licensed games that aren't any good.

An unmotivated brawler at best. Consider to buy it only if Watchmen is your absolute all-time favorite and you can’t live without a game about it.

Unfortunately EA doesn't provide you with a good game when it comes to Watchmen: The End is Nigh. Only gamers without a high standard can consider buying this junk.

Games Radar (in-house)

The real breaking point for this innocuous title is the price tag. Yes, Watchmen is one of the best looking downloadable games we’ve seen on a console (even if the lighting takes the murky color palette to nearly opaque darkness), and yes, the voice acting and production values are impressively high-end. Still, paying $20.00 for such a shallow experience just doesn’t seem right.

Destructoid

The End is Nigh seems like the foundation for an exceptional, well-put-together brawler, with the look of a Triple-A title that could have been something more. But it also feels like a concept, a shell that only gets the basics right and doesn’t take that next step to become a more interesting, engaging experience.

GameTrailers

Though largely lacking in ingenuity, Watchmen: The End is Nigh proves that if licensed games can’t be good, they can at least look good. The gameplay has a life expectancy of about 45 minutes, and at a pricey $20 for just a few hours of play, it probably should have been released for five bucks and used as a promotional tool for the flick.

A distressingly shallow videogame in which there's nothing for players to do but beat the living crap out of everyone they see.

Wired

The game requires very little in the way of strategy or timing -- just mashing on the attack buttons is more than enough to get you through half the game. At that point, more and more enemies start piling on you, and getting cheap-shotted in the back is an excellent way to die (and be booted out to a long loading screen while you wait for the exact same level you were just in to be reloaded).
