Summary
Set within a near-fictional, historical WWII setting, players take on the role of the heroic OSA agent BJ Blazkowicz as they are thrust into the unknown and unexpected to battle against combat troops, otherworldly forces, and the dark science created by a supernatural Nazi force hell-bent on world domination. Wolfenstein offers players an action-packed experience as they investigate the powers of a dark parallel dimension, join with resistance forces, and employ an arsenal of conventional and otherworldly weapons in attempts to annihilate the Nazi war machine. Ensuring a deep variety of action, Wolfenstein provides gamers with an assortment of interlinked missions that drive an intense, story-driven combat experience; while the Wolfenstein multiplayer experience continues the world-renowned tradition of class-based team objective gameplay with a full arsenal of conventional and supernatural weapons for addictive online warfare. With so much history behind the Wolfenstein series, it can be quite difficult to live up to the legacy of the games that came before you. The latest entry in the series does a fantastic job of this, from its gorgeous graphics to its solid story line; everything is well thought out and well executed. With the potential for additional multiplayer maps thrown in, this is a great value overall.

A really good FPS, which borrows interesting elements from GTA-style sandboxes. The weapons, veil-abilities and enemies are excellent. The multiplayer-experience is nothing special, though. [Aug 2009]
GameZone
While some missions are by the number, you will find yourself enjoying the action and supernatural twist that will keep you playing to the very end and well into the night thanks to the online multiplayer. This is definitely a Must Have for any FPS fan.

If you’re looking for a different way to blast those same Nazis you’ve been battling for years, look no further than this fun and exciting shooter.

It's no Call of Duty, true, but then CoD doesn't let you tear apart giant monsters with machine gun turrets or battle Nazis in a zeppelin, does it? [Nov 2009, p.66]
GamePro
Again, it's nothing new but the weapons and powers are interesting enough that, if you put in the work, the reward is there. But it probably won't make you forget about Modern Warfare or Halo 3 or Killzone 2 or whatever online FPS you're currently hooked on.

It's familiar enough in spots, but the way the Veil powers function gives everything just enough of a tweak to feel exciting.

If you're into WWII shooters -- and judging by the sales of every single Call of Duty title ever, you are -- but you're looking for something with a little twist to it -- which, judging by the sales of twisty straws, you are -- and you don't mind the color green -- and judging by the number of Irish people in the world, you don't -- you should get yourself a copy of Wolfenstein.

Spot-on Wolfenstein atmosphere combines with gleefully vicious weaponry to serve up a tasty smoothie of good old-fashioned Nazi-frying. It lacks in the new idea department, but it has fun aplenty.

The single-player campaign is a lot of fun, though rather short. Multiplayer and lots of hidden objects help to extend the fun. Still, you'll be done with the game after a few weeks.

Although the Wolfenstein series has an excellent reputation, we were a bit skeptical before the review. But Wolfenstein offers brilliant, intense action with B.J. Blazkowicz, the Nazi Terminator. So the skepticism quickly turned into a hell-ride of fun.

Even though its held back by a lack of unrealised theatrics, Wolfenstein’s still one of the only games that lets you dish death to the Nazis in bold and imaginative ways.

Wolfenstein is an awesome blend of old-school memories and next-gen ideas assembled into a rewarding game experience you can’t afford to miss. Just don’t plan on heading online anytime soon.

Not only does Wolfenstein recreate a little dab of this magic, its embraces the world of magic and the supernatural to give this old standard a fresh perspective.

Wolfenstein might not hold up to Call of Duty in terms of sales, but Activision’s other WWII shooter still has plenty of interesting ideas to please any fan. With powerful weapons at your disposal, supernatural powers with the help of The Veil, and plenty of eerie Nazi soldiers to kill, the fun never stops.

Wolfenstein is entertainment. It isn’t a revolutionary experience, and there are a lot of games out there which are better looking, but it doesn’t have any big flaws either.

High def graphics aside this could almost be five or even ten years old in terms of game design but it matters not a jot because its also genuinely fun to play.

In conclusion, Wolfenstein is a sturdy game with some very impressive graphics, however in terms of offering the gaming community something new, it's unfortunately lacking in this department.

A not bad, but not great, return to one of the longest running shooter series of all time.

Despite the few complaints I have about Wolfenstein, particularly the dated graphics and terrible A.I., when it comes right down to core gameplay it is a fun, solid and satisfying FPS that will appeal to those looking for a straight up shooter with few bells and whistles.

It's a polished, highly entertaining shooter with a unique setting and loads of Nazis just waiting to be mowed down. It may not be game of the year material, but it's one of the better shooters this year.

The fact that it came near its former greatness is almost more disappointing than if it had been terrible; with a few original ideas, this could have been the must-have shooter of the summer. Instead, Wolfenstein offers a weekend or so of entertainment, but will quickly be forgotten in the onslaught of triple-A titles coming later this year.

It is hands down a good game, providing in every aspect and it is very enjoyable, but it has too many superior rivals, which to be fair is not its fault.

The action is about as tight as in World at War, but the hub town kills the momentum. In exchange, though, you get demonic Nazis and fun retro-scifi weapons. If you can't get enough FPS action, and can't wait for Modern Warfare 2, this is worth twelve hours of your life.

Yet another surprise hit for 2009, this could be the game that tides you over until the summer blockbusters arrive. Wolfenstein may not be a Killzone 2 killer, but it's an action-packed romp full of powerful weaponry, bad accents, and Nazi-zombie killing glee.

Those new abilities feel a little gimmicky at times, but when considered together with the multiplayer, Wolfenstein provides enough firepower and over-the-top storytelling to satiate anyone's desire for occult, alternate history action.

Basically, don't pick up Wolfenstein for the multiplayer, especially if you're hoping for some type of Return to Castle Wolfenstein experience out of it. It's fun, and worth checking out, but hardly competitive or well polished. Instead, you'll be buying this game primarily for the single player experience, which isn't without it's own set of faults, but still manages to be fun despite that.

Nobody will be surprised with the new chapter in the Wolfenstein’s series, but its classic gameplay is funny.

Speaking of strategy, Wolfenstein is in dire need of a new one. Grinding through waves of predictable enemies in corridors is no way to pay homage to the franchise’s unquestioned legacy in the genre.

A decent game, though nothing special. [Issue#183, p.76]
DailyGame
My recommendation: let Wolfenstein stay in the other dimension and away from your Xbox 360 or PS3. There are other shooters this fall that can scratch your FPS itch a heck of a lot better.

Wolfenstein is absolutely not the greatest shooter of this year, therefore the game lacks at too many points. But on the other hand, the game offers you a nice combination of shooting with weapons and using the skills of the medallion. Reason enough to buy this game as a perfect snack, before the really big shooters will hit the stores later this year.

On a technical level, then, Wolfenstein is a game that swings wildly in quality on an almost minute-by-minute basis, and a rather vanilla multiplayer offering doesn’t do much to quicken the pulse.

It would be nice to have a few more types of enemy rather than ninety percent being standard soldiers but what there is comes thick and fast. It is certainly not the most accomplished example of the genre though and for those people who like an FPS but are on a limited budget it might not be worth the ticket price.

A big, dumb, action movie blast. And that's fine by us. [Oct 2009, p.108]
IGN
It's admirable that Raven Software recognized this with Wolfenstein, but you can't help but wish that they developed the kernel of the ideas in this game into something more. As it is, this new Wolfenstein comes off as an engaging, though otherwise forgettable, shooter.

If anything, multiplayer feels tacked on. Ultimately, Wolfenstein is a decent shooter full of explosions, machine guns and plenty of drama. Just don't expect it to wow you.

Wolfenstein has two sides. Sometimes, there are an awful lot of Nazi’s and there’s bullets flying right past you all the time, immersing you in the game. Other times, you just wish you could blast a bullet through main character B.J. Blazkowicz’s own head after walking through another boring alley in Isenstadt. Nevertheless, the biggest part of Wolfenstein was played with a big grin on our face. It’s a decent addition to a classic franchise.

Novelty and genius are not the same thing, and after a weekend with Wolfenstein you will most likely have seen enough. It’s fun, corny action, but it’s not a keeper. [Nov 2009, p.76]
GameTrailers
Players who are attached to the franchise won't be burned if they happen to pick the game up, and most shooter fans will be able to squeeze some enjoyment out of it. It's hard to imagine the multiplayer mode keeping much traction as the game ages, though, so look at the game as a short term investment.

Along the way, a lot of the little touches keep this from being the complete package, a lack of blood going everywhere (like it should), and that whole bit of online play being unbalanced. But taking into account the top-notch single-player experience, this is a title good enough to hold the attention for the hours necessary to finish it.

In the end this is a by the numbers shooter with slick graphics, and ample opportunity to shoot supercharged Nazis. It's not going to win any awards but it's worth checking out if you’re looking for a weekend to pass the time shooting everyone's favorite bad guys.

Wolfenstein is an average FPS, with main drawbacks like an excessive linearity (partially hidden by the town meta-level, unsuccessfully), a general lack of polish, and poor A.I. A good level design and great scripted fights will please who is looking for some easy fun, but ultimately this is really milking an historical license.

Wolfenstein is not a bad game, it just lacks that overall buzz factor to keep the disc in your tray.

But by no means is it a bad game, but on the other hand it’s not a particularly good game and as such falls into the doldrums or mediocrity.

With only genre basics in its bag of tricks, and hobbled at every turn by clumsy implementation, in a gaming landscape that already offers Battlefield 1943 and Call of Duty: World at War's Nazi Zombies mode, Wolfenstein's bargain basement charms are of limited appeal.

Generic gameplay, poor multiplayer offerings, and below average visuals? This I can't even recommend when it hits the inevitable bargain bin.

The German version of Wolfenstein is no Wolfenstein! The original English version would get a ranking about 80%, but the German one kills every kind of atmosphere from the beginning!

Wolfenstein is essentially a mediocre product, even under the technical point of view, a title whose qualities are unfortunately not sufficient to hide its many flaws. The quality standards of Return to Castle Wolfenstein are just a memory of the past and whoever is expecting an intense and entertaining experience will be deeply deluded.

There is still some Wolfenstein magic in the air. It's a good shooter, with an extra touch of veil magic. The story may be a bit too short, but it's so fun to vaporize Nazis!

Steve D gave it a6:
First of all, this game didn't met the standards that past Wolfensteins introduced us. That means that the game upon it's release had class A bugs that were crashing the game,it didn't had a real digitized person in it ,intense soundtrack etc.. Secondly, this was the first game of the series that wasn't developed first for computers, but it was first developed for xbox360 and then was ported at pc's and ps3's something that makes the aiming with a mouse useless, and it was also confusing trying to activate the medallion powers designed at cross symbol to be used with xbox360's d-pad,with the computer's keyboard. Thirdly, the gameplay changed a lot.The character's movement is extremely slow compared to what we were used at.The auto aim assistant killed the essence of skill at aiming. The hunt for medkits and dogfood is not there since there is health regeneration, for casual-user friendly gameplay. Actually, the game was the easiest Wolfenstein game ever created, and one of the most easy and short FPS games around. To add more to the short longtitude of the game,if you clear the game once you unlock all the cheats, which automatically makes gold and secret handing useless, and is killing any of the replay value the game would otherwise had. If there is one change I liked at this Wolfenstein against past titles,is the fact that B.J. looks more human in this one, with feelings. That adds to develop a better character background. I will not say anything about the multiplayer part of the game, because it simply doesn't exist. If this was any other game,I would give it a 5. I only give it a 6 because of it's name.
Felipe L gave it a7:
Good game, good graphics, reasonable AI, diferent trophies, not dispensable only for colectors or gamemanics
Landon W gave it an8:
Let's just say that if Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 deserves a 96 based solely on its online/multiplayer experience, then Wolfenstein should not be faulted for it's failure in the multiplayer dept, as it's story mode in single player is captivating! Believable, not hardly, but entertaining to say the least. The graphics are great, too. Although if you're still on your first play-through of Uncharted 2, you might be disappointed? The bar was certainly set high in that game! Back to Wolfenstein, though: Game play was fun. More so than most FPS games, because of an inclusion of third-person views when using cover. I happen to enjoy 3rd PS more than FPS because of the tunnel-vision effect experienced when playing a FPS. I rented the game initially, but will be buying it when the price drops. Replay value is in the inclusion to keep your upgraded weapons on a 2nd play-through in an effort to trophy-hunt for items you might have missed the first time through. My overall score: 8.5.
Matt J gave it a5:
It was fun at first then it got boring you started to do the same thing over and over and its short also the powers you get are not that great. I was looking forward to this game and it kinda sucked.
Daryl S gave it a9:
Considering the onslaught of shooters in the last while, I do find this one intriguing because of the occult aspect. The graphics are very good.the storyline keeps me going for more and I really like all the weapon choices. Have only had it freeze up on me one time.
Drew B. gave it an8:
I have to give this game an 8 for "well executed, but not very original". I loved RTCW, and the story/atmosphere of this game definitely follows in those footsteps well. The inclusion of stealth as an option (rather than a forced feature in specific missions) is nice, as is the balance between conventional weapons and Veil powers in combat. I sometimes chose to wade into a battle with my Reflective Shield on, bouncing bullets into soldiers' faces, just to conserve ammo. The weakness of this game I felt was the lack of originality in the game's design. I enjoyed the variety of enemies and missions, but none of them were really anything I hadn't seen before in another FPS. The Veil powers were a refreshing and unique addition to the game, but the mechanics of this powers were pretty standard fare. On the technical side though, I didn't encounter very many bugs at all. Overall, I gotta give it to Wolfenstein for being a very well-orchestrated game with fights that kept me entertained, as well as snappy graphics. The biggest downside was that nothing struck me as truly ground-breaking. Regardless, I still feel like it's earned its rightful place in the Wolfenstein saga.
Marcus nevermind gave it a1:
RTCW was a stunning experience, based in real life with just a little occult added to it. This is just the opposite. Istead of stickin to the original plan, story, and build to the succes of ET thw Wolfenstein name that used to stand for quality is now connected with any other crappy FPS.
