Summary

Capcom Puzzle World provides gem busting mayhem at its best with the cult hit, Super Puzzle Fighter II. This time around, in addition to the renowned Super Puzzle Fighter II: X gem breaking mode, two new never-before-released-in-the-US options will be added to increase the level of addictiveness. Super Puzzle Fighter II: Y has player’s group similar colors to create groups of three or more. Once the colors are line up, they break and charge up the "Change Gem" meter creating furious chains for come-from-behind wins. With the Super Puzzle Fighter II: Z mode, the rules are the same as X, but instead of falling blocks, the play field raises and the first one to the top loses. Block Block is an innovative twist to the block breaking genre. Released for the arcades in 1990, Block Block features a two player co-op mode, allowing for the cooperative destruction of blocks. Also unique to this title was the constantly shrinking paddle that forced player to finish each board as quickly as possible. Originally released for the PlayStation game console, the Buster Bros. Collection is a simple yet extremely addictive three-games-in-one puzzle shooter that consists of Buster Bros, Super Buster Bros and Buster Buddies. An arcade hit, Buster Bros has one or two players navigating through over 50 timed environmental stages shooting all the bubbles on screen while avoiding contact. Super Buster Bros is an updated version of its predecessor with improved graphics and the inclusion of “Panic Mode” which added 99 levels of feverish action. [Capcom]

Like all the best games, there's a whole world of subtle strategy beneath this simple concept and the Street Fighter branding is cleverly used.

I consider this title a must-have for all nostalgic people that love puzzle games and like to take them on-the-go. Just don't buy it for Block Block.

"Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo," with its various modes and options, makes this well worth the $30. Challenging a friend in AdHoc never gets old, whether shooting bubbles into nothingness or dropping mad block combos to clear the screen in a devastating manner.

We'd rather have, you know, access to a full emulator, but puzzle geeks can't deny the quality or value of Capcom Puzzle World. More classic coin-op compilations like this one, please.

Capcom Puzzle World won't win any awards in the long-term, and many of you might be annoyed by the presence of Block Block. But the game still has many puzzle moments worth enduring, especially if you're a hardcore fan of Super Puzzle Fighter and the Buster Bros. games.

Block Block may be shaky, but the three Buster Bros. titles are more than solid and Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo is a prime cut of grade-A puzzle action.

Though not as expansive a collection as the title might suggest, Capcom Puzzle World is worth the price of admission for "Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo" alone.

Classic brick-busting and baloon-popping of yore comprise Capcom Puzzle World, with the biggest draw being Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo. [Apr 2007, p.87]

If you're new to the land of Puzzle Fighter (or Buster Bros.) it's worth checking out, and if you've played them all before back in the day it's still worth checking out. As long as you enjoy the old-school puzzle games, you'll enjoy this one.

The new modes and wireless multiplayer are as sexy as Chun-Li's squatty, super-deformed legs, but deciding whether to drop $30 for an old-ass puzzle game and a few rejects may be a losing fight.

While Capcom Puzzle World doesn't deliver as much gaming goodness as it could, the great implementation of Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo on the PSP is really worth the price of admission.

It's all well and good banging on about games that defined childhood gaming experiences, but essentially what does an 80s kid from North London know when he's horribly sunburnt and tipsy from a few sips of Sangria? That was then, and sadly for Capcom Puzzle World, this is now.

Whilst "Super Puzzle Fighter" is still a great game, the poor multiplayer options mean that you are better off with one of versions previously released on the home consoles, or one of HD versions making their way to PS3, 360 and PC later this year.

Enjoy "Super Puzzle Fighter" - it's ace. Just a shame the rest of CPW is such balls. [Mar 2007, p.78]
