One hundred years have passed since the evil Sorcerer Zarok was defeated at the Battle of Gallowmere, heroically cut down by a mortally wounded Sir Daniel Fortesque. Or at least, that's what the people were told; in fact poor Sir Dan was a bit of a coward, falling in the very first wave of arrows. Now Zarok has returned, turning day into night, and raising an undead army to conquer the land. As a side effect Dan has also been resurrected... now, he has the chance to defeat Zarok and in death become the hero he never was in life. Follow Dan's quest across the magical land of Gallowmere, taking in oodles of varied levels, gazillions of combat moves and bucketloads of weapons. As the enchanting storyline unfolds, become enthralled in the MediEvil universe; a weird and wonderful place bursting with action and boundless humour. Two handfuls of multiplayer mini-games, with WiFi compatible multiplayer support. In-game help system in the form of the Voodoo Witch and in-game manual located in Dan's crypt. [SCEE]

Really easy to pick up and play. The controls are very easy and responsive. The mini puzzles that are presented to the gamers are easy enough to understand yet still provide a nice challenge.

Game Chronicles
Offers a quality presentation of a sometimes-awkward game, but for the most part you can overcome the quirky camera and really get into the melee and ranged combat. And the collection of mini-games rivals a handheld version of "Mario Party."

MediEvil is ultra-polished, filled with wonder and brilliant level design and set to a soundrack I'd put up against any cosole game on the market. [Sept 2005, p.61]

Minor technical issues aside, this is one of the more polished games on the PSP in terms of presentation.

Unfortunately, both the action/adventure sequences and the platforming/puzzle solving sequences are fairly basic and, therefore, rather easy.

A quirky, lighthearted third-person action-adventure that's a fun and engaging diversion - ideal for the PSP. [Oct 2005, p.109]

It's a great looking game with top-shelf cutscenes, voiceacting and writing. The gameplay itself is just slightly above average but it's plenty challenging enough for gamers of all levels.

MediEvil Resurrection is largely based on old hack n' slash design tropes (like collecting runes to open doors and rudimentary arena-based boss battles) that seems a bit dated in this day and age. [Oct 2005, p.154]

Gamer's Hell
While the flawed camera system and occasionally awkward attack mechanics can make the gameplay a little troublesome at times, on the whole MediEvil is a thoroughly fun title.

The camera issues and combat problems complicate this version of Sir Dan’s adventures, making this one less than perfect, but more than adequate as a basic platformer.

Unfortunately, the lack of fundamental necessities like better camera functionality and fighting mechanics end-up weighing down the experience. We simply need a camera that controls better.

Using Sir Dan as a mascot platforming character wasn't the best idea. Jak & Daxter on the other hand, might have been - but we'll just have to wait for that treat later on in the year.

It's challenging, fun, genuinely hilarious, and sets the benchmark for future PSP games in this genre - the likes of Daxter and Prince of Persia have a lot to live up to.

While fairly on the generic side, Resurrection does manage to offer a decent platforming experience for gamers searching for something new.

The strongest feature the game has though is the comedic tone of the game. When you play it, you almost feel as if you are in a Monty Python game, or one of Tim Burton’s animated movies.

It's funny, there are plenty of new locales and characters, and the production values are admirable, though the framerate chugs and the camera could be more refined. [Nov 2005, p.96]

While it's not the most original game of its kind, fans of MediEvil should like this slick redux of the popular PlayStation platformers. The wireless multiplayer minigames are a nice bonus, too.

It looks pretty and the controls work well, but overall MediEvil lacks in excitement and is slow to get good. You'd only buy because there aren't any other decent action adventures around yet. [GamesMaster]

There is enough of a package here to justify a decent portable game and a nice 3-D quest, the likes of which have never been seen on a handheld. If only Medievil: Resurrection spent a little more time cleaning off the cobwebs.

Worth Playing
Despite its look, Resurrection is so clearly a PSOne game at heart that it is difficult to stomach as a modern release, and despite the extremely slick production values, it is not the sequel fans were hoping for, nor the proper modernization that the series deserves.

The snarky gargoyles and twisted art design certainly merit the attention. But even a handful of decent jokes weren't enough to complete the illusion that this is a truly updated release, rather than a ten year old game with a nice coat of varnish.

Pelaaja (Finland)
MediEvil on PSP feels too much like a half-hearted rehash of the old PlayStation game, but with with some new faults. The fighting degenerates into a simple hack’n’slash, despite different weapons and attack combos. The controls are just not good enough for varied combat. Despite the repetitive and simple combat and platforming sections, the reason you keep on playing is the humour. Sir Dan is a very sympathetic character and its fun to follow his erratic adventures around Gallowmere and his strange interaction with other characters. Voice acting is excellent too [Sept 2005, p.66]

Just trying to play through the game was a struggle; sure the cumbersome controls and other such issues are frustrating, however the biggest concern is the lack of appeal the game has, boredom sinks in after only a couple of levels and there’s very little to re-capture this later in the game.

For anyone who hasn’t played a thirdperson platforming adventure game in the last five years, this might well serve as perfectly engaging and adequate entertainment. I honestly do think that Sir Daniel Fortesque is a good character with potential, but I would have much rather seen an all-new game with a nod towards current methodology than a rehash of something that honestly wasn't all that great in the first place.

Collision detection is extremely sloppy, and there's some inexcusable stuff, like ranged weapons that fail to register solid hits because they're still busy registering the previous shot, and a camera that's very mercurial in its performance.

Judged purely on its own merits on this platform it looks like it might be vaguely interesting, but all too soon you're dragged into the real world and forced to acknowledge that despite its warm touches of humour, the hackandslash action is nowhere near the standard we expect from a full-priced game these days.

Nick B. gave it a7:
A fun game, but I found the camera (like many first gen PSP games) had a wonky control that made it dizzying to play and focus on. In the end I had to give up because of it (sigh).

James H. gave it an8:
Great voice overs, funny but game play could be a little more challenging.

Bernard W. gave it an8:
A witty and accomplished adventure, most people would have fun with this.

Zippy Zee gave it an8:
Fun game, don't know why people are giving it bad reviews and meta scores it low...??

Alex gave it a9:
Very fun and VERY addicting. The only problem i've found is the controls are a bit clunky. using the analog stick somewhat solves this problem though. 9.5/10

Toni M. gave it an8:
I like this game a lot. The graphics are wonderful, the humour is great, just a overall good game that's lots of fun to play!

Wongit gave it an8:
Alot funner then i expected. I was expecting something tottaly weak like Death Jr. or Dead to Rights: Reckoning, but this game is actually alot of fun, and is pretty clever. Pick this one up, its definetly a good choice.
