Summary
Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron is the previously untold story of a ragtag ensemble of battle-hardened rogues and scoundrels assembled by Han Solo. Gathered to execute some of the most secretive operations in the Rebel Alliance's war against the Galactic Empire, the Renegade Squadron participates in battles spanning the galaxy. From the Valley of the Sith on Korriban to a dogfight in space through the remains of Alderaan, Solo directs the team on missions of sabotage, rescue and retrieval. In Renegade Squadron, robust customization options replace the class system seen in previous Star Wars Battlefront titles, allowing for millions of possible unique combatants. With weapons, equipment and abilities that players select themselves, no two allies will likely ever look or perform exactly the same. The game also boasts expanded multiplayer options for the PSP. Up to 16 players can compete against each other over the Internet and eight via the PSP system's ad-hoc wireless connection. [LucasArts]

The gameplay variety is second to none with a good cross referencing of gameplay genres. You can also expect some surprises, as some famous playable Star Wars characters make an appearance. May this game be with you.

Renegade Squadron scores for being a great game that offers hours of satisfying multiplayer, while simultaneously using its license to its fullest potential and improving over its predecessor.

The mulitplayer is simply outstanding. [Nov 2007, p.83]
GamingExcellence
Overall, Renegade Squadron is a solid title that brings great graphics and sound together with stealthy load times and seamless multiplayer.

The poor AI and incredibly short campaign will make it boring quickly, but the online play gives a new meaning to portable gaming. Find a wireless connection and jump on.

Although not everything works perfectly in Renegade Squadron, the most important feature in the game--the online multiplayer--is great. If you’re interested in the single-player content, you will come away disappointed, even with all of the different gameplay modes.

Even though it lacks a sweet presentation and plays the same as its predecessors, Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron is a must play for PSP owners everywhere.

Renegade Squadron is an improvement over its predecessor in almost every way.

The deep customization will have users tweaking for hours, and the online options offer a serviceable distraction from the offline campaign. Anyone claiming the PSP has no games should probably take a look at this one.

Overall, Star Wars Battlefront Renegade Squadron is a pretty solid title and it should not be overlooked by any gamer, from fans of the Star Wars saga to gamers who just happen to own a PSP.

The singleplayer portion is a little on the shallow side, what with the brief campaign and the one-night stand nature of the Galactic Conquest mode, but the multiplayer portion is ripe with replay value.

Star Wars Battlefront fans will certainly find a lot to like about Renegade Squadron and, even though the controls can be a bit frustrating at times, all the changes and fun game modes make this one worth a look.

With more than a dozen planets to fight on, plus the space battles above several of them, and the large selection of weapons, kits and vehicles, Renegade Squadron goes a long way to provide you with the kind of variety and longevity you look for in a game like this.

No massive leap over "Battlefront 2," but more of the same is welcome. [Dec 2007, p.70]
IGN
Is it perfect? No, not by a long shot, but the blah graphics and love-it or hate-it gameplay are overshadowed by the customization options, extensive online modes and the satisfaction that comes from taking out an AT-AT while on foot.

It's "Battlefront"... but it's also the closest thing to the console versions so far, making it an evolution. With a good story, decent controls and great space battles, Rebellion hits more than it misses, but there's still a lot to improve. [Issue#160, p.80]
MEGamers
Short and Shallow Single player campaign but great and detailed Multiplayer mode.

When the battle’s done with and the bodies are rotting where they fell, Star Wars Battlefront is still at heart ‘Battlefield for Star Wars fans’ - and that’s what makes it great.

If you are looking for a handheld multiplayer experience, and are willing to tolerate some control aggravations, you may want to take a gander at Renegade Squadron. But if your desire lies anywhere outside of this, these are not the droids you are looking for. Move along.

If you don't mind a somewhat simplistic third person shooter and are a Star Wars fan you could do much worse than Renegade Squadron.

It's the foot-based missions that people play this game for. And to be more specific, it's the multiplayer foot-based missions that are enjoyable.

Renegade Squadron looks great and has some fantastic online multiplayer modes, but it unfortunately suffers from a sluggish control system. Still worth a bash if you're a fan though.

Great action and excellent multiplayer modes make Renegade Squadron an enjoyable experience, even if the short single-player mode and substandard visuals keep it from reaching its full potential.

But while multiplayer rocks, the appeal of the campaign and character customization lasts about as long as Darth Maul's screen time. [Nov 2007, p.122]
1UP
OK, the individual missions may not all be epic, but the side story of this renegade squadron (whose tale weaves in and out of the events from the original movies) is one worth seeing through. (Hey, you can be done by lunchtime.)

It's deeply frustrating. There are some great ideas in here, the presentation is top-notch and the options are plentiful, but none of these good intentions add up to a game of any real depth or longevity.

This will be good fun for Star Wars fanatics who want to see how Renegade Squadron fits in with the overall Star Wars story, and the game's best feature - online multiplayer - should keep most entertained for a good few hours. But this isn't an essential PSP purchase.

Disappointing effort; scrapes the barrel more than it feels the Force. [Christmas 2007, p.123]

Star Wars: Battlefront Renegade Squadron is one third an excellent game, one third a terrible game and one third a passable game… shaky and not stirring!

The biggest complaint, as ever, is the controls: until the PSP grows a second analogue stick. shooters are going to feel clunky. [Dec 2007, p.112]
Gamestyle
For fans of the first two Battlefront games there is plenty here to enjoy. The single player is a limited experience which will disappoint most, but for those with access to the online features then Renegade Squadron is well worth the asking price.

The single-player campaign is on the short side and the AI definitely isn’t the most tricked-out droid in the sandcrawler, but the medal-unlock challenges and multiplayer definitely give this shooter some space-legs.

There's still only about six hours of solo play here - hardly a good return on your 35 quid outlay. [Dec 2007, p.84]
PALGN
Despite fixing the major problem of its portable predecessor, Renegade Squadron feels like a cheap cash in with ugly visuals and simplistic gameplay.

Evan gave it a9:
This is a rather impressive game. I got it used for $13 so the expectations were quite low but i was impressed. The campaign is short, but entertaining. The conquest was, to be honest, I couldn't tell you cause I'm hooked with the online battles. I felt that playing through the normal difficulty with the lock on targeting system was a bit easy, but playing it again in elite is much more difficult. To those that say this system takes the skill out of the game, you probably haven't played online. Whats great about online battles is that it doesn't matter how good you are (within reason) it is always challenging. A great pick up and play game, if you have easy wi-fi access. The only downside is the short campaign. Don't give up on this title until you have played online!!
Desmond H. gave it a10:
Great game, better than the original.
Royal T. gave it a10:
Absolutely awesome! 1 day in and I'm hooked, great gameplay, just need to practice so I don't keep getting anihilated in the wi-fi matches!
Jim B. gave it a9:
I find it odd that people are complaining about the graphics, I suspect people are losing sight of the fact it is a PSP game, and not a 360 title! I think it is not bad at all for a handheld title. Cool story (and graphical style to the story sequences) and plenty of muliplayer options for those who play online. Way, way better than BFII for PSP.
Jonathan G. gave it an8:
This game has better controls than batllfront 2 on the psp you use look on insreading of aiming. At first i thought that the fact that it has lock on that it might take the skill out of it but it really doesnt. Although some time the lock on does have problems it works out fine. The new controls make the gameplay a little different. It runs pretty smoothly with the ocassional problem where there is no sound for like a second while you are playing but it doesnt stop your gameplay. The campaign was a short which is to be expected from a battlefront game. I did like the Galactic conquest though i like it better than the other battlefront games' galactic conquest. You can customize more things than in the other games. I love the fact that you can choose what kind of weapons you can have you can finally have like a rifle and a rocket luancher at the same time. This was a good game well needed for psp owners.
McBain 17 gave it a4:
A serious step backwards in graphics and gameplay. The maps are bland, the lock on system aweful, and MP average at best. Space is the only saving grace for a title that could have been a huge hit for PsP. Very dissapointing.
Arie P. gave it a6:
Not that great as I thought it would be; yes it has a campain, but Rebellion did such a poor job with the gameplay it's not even funny. Not the worst game on the PSP, but the Original Battlefront is way better.
