Summary
Assume the role of Gabe Logan, a highly-trained Precision Strike Operative, commanding a black box United States Agency that legally doesn't exist. Gabe finds himself dealing with a beautiful woman from his past who harbors a shocking secret while he battles the Red Section, a para-military group in possession of Project Dark Mirror, a next-generation weapon of mass destruction. Using Precision Strike Tactics, advanced vision technology, and the latest in high-tech weaponry, Logan and his team perform surgical strike missions - too sensitive for a military response, too dangerous for civilian intelligence forces. Through the role of Gabe, players will have to be quick to strategize, as he is responsible to infiltrate, recon and execute decisively. Once inserted, Logan is his own authority - he must make life and death decisions, quickly choosing which course of action to take.

While complicated at first, the completely customizable schemes work extremely well. Nearly every control parameter can be adjusted and tweaked, and it would be difficult to not find a method that works.

This game simply doesn't belong on the PSP; it's too early for a game of this caliber to show up on Sony's little portable system -- hell, it took nearly five years before "God of War" showed us what the PS2 can handle. Not only is Dark Mirror a damn fine game, it may very well be the best game on the system.

There are a ton of multiplayer modes, using ad-hoc hosting, wireless Internet multiplayer, in-game chart with mic/headset - in fact, every mode the PSP supports. It's enough to raise the game to the status of PSP must-have.

By turning round the normal rules so that the D-pad operates the functions and the right hand buttons deal with the camera, this intuitive system gives the gameplay a huge boost and also reverses the law of diminishing returns for sequels.

Looks good, sounds good and plays like a dream...A stunningly executed shooter and a real joy to play.

Everything a player could want in a game: the story mode is of the perfect length and difficulty, the game is extremely replayable, and the multiplayer offering is both fun and robust. And, arguably most importantly, there are negligible loading times.

Reminiscent of the classic PlayStation originals while adding a healthy dose of fresh stealth and action moments throughout, this game will hook you from start to finish.

The latest chapter, Dark Mirror, has great graphics, great sound, great gameplay and a very robust multiplayer mode all neatly wrapped up in one big package.

Dark Mirror packs an uncommon amount of detail, variety and overall quality. It blends intense action sequences with stealth in a way no portable game has before, and it does so with style to spare.

Simply put, Syphon Filter is the best PSP game to date. The singleplayer campaign is diverse and compelling, and what it lacks in terms of length is more than made up for by the equally wonderful multiplayer component.

With superlative controls, a fun and deep single player experience and enough online options to keep you entertained for a long time, Dark Mirror is a strong contender for best game on the PSP.

Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror is the game that the PSP has been waiting for - one actually made for a portable that is also fun in long stretches. This game will definitely help to sell systems.

It combines engrossing and detailed online play with a smart and difficult single player campaign, and wraps both packages up in style, with solid graphics and great audio. So make like Narcissus, and get lost in this reflection.

The game’s multiplayer mode adds a lot of replay value, though. This and the excellent presentation make Syphon Filter one of the best games on its series and one of the best games available on the PSP.

That sense of design pervades Dark Mirror, making it the best shooter yet released for the PSP. Don't be put off by the learning curve, which demands a bit more effort at the front than most action titles. Once Syphon Filter's rhythms are familiar, you'll find depth and replayability in spades.

You do get the feeling that Sony has gone all out with Dark Mirror. It looks lovely, but more importantly you won't feel like switching it off in order to play a 'proper' console version.

The slickness and variety on offer makes this stand head and shoulders above its competition. After "GTA," Syphon Filter is definitely THE action game to own on PSP. [June 2006, p.74]
GameBrink
With a huge multiplayer online component and a well constructed single player game Syphon Filter is a must play PSP game. I’m hesitant to say must buy due to the control problems, the sound technical issues, and the retarded AI but other than those issues it’s a solid outing for 989 Studios.

Makes all the right moves. It is a real pleasure to play, both simple and deep at same time. And there is a multiplayer heaven included, too. [Sept 2006]
GameCritics
Everything about the game is top-quality. The artificial intelligence provides plenty of interesting moments, the save points are frequent, the story is more accessible than Splinter Cell's dry politi-babble, the voice work and graphics are the best I've seen on the PSP, and the entire game drips with polish and care delivered by people who know what they're doing.

One is simply awestruck that so much can be squeezed into such a tiny package... Dark Mirror is everything a PSP game should be — an extravagant interactive movie with intricate gameplay and an elaborate story.

This could be the best Syphon Filter game, if not the best action game so far for the PSP. The depth is something out of a console game, but it’s tailored to the tiniest stitch to work best on a handheld – and it does.

The fact remains that this is one of, if not the best game in the series, and it's got some great multiplayer modes(playable online!)to further sweeten an already sweet game. [May 2006, p.84]

Better than any PSP shooter yet, Dark Mirror functions without a second analog stick. The extraordinary grace of the remaining controls is enough to almost forget how nice dual-stick control would be.

I'm hesitant to call this the best PSP game yet because it still carries so many of the flaws of previous games – mostly in terms of control – as well as having fairly trite single-player moments.

It combines a proper level design and engaging gameplay. It’s definitely a great return to form for the series. While the control scheme is one of the most functional, it has a few quirks and the game in general does somewhat lack some personality.

Providing you can find yourself a dark and secluded enough place to play it, Dark Mirror is the first great shooter for the PSP and, despite its lack of personality and unremarkable story, arguably one the most consistently enjoyable genre entries of the past year.

The new control scheme is great and needs to be implemented for more third-person action games that seem to feel hindered by whatever control scheme they think they should use.

A stellar multi-player and strong Campaign mode mark a return to form for Sony’s favourite son. [June 2006, p.124]
Electronic Gaming Monthly
This measured, almost plodding gameplay ups the tension and works well in campaign mode, but the faster-paced chaos of multiplayer only heightens your awareness of the innately awkward controls. Multi's a bit short on maps and modes, too.

Best third person shooting game ever on psp.. addictive multiplayer game.. the best game on psp!
Zem Z. gave it a9:
This is a great game. but not without it's problems (don't play the training missions you will be talked out of your mind) i've been a fan of syphon filter untill three where i was too lazy to go out & buy, & dark mirrior delivers more than i expected, a very solid game with few flaws however it has liberal amounts of the good game kill, escort missions. but this is a great game for twenty dollers & i recomend it.
Robert W. gave it a10:
A game like this raises the bar to a level that few games can match. Played both this game and MGS: PO, and I still find myself coming back to this game. I am waiting in anticipation for the sequel to this hit.
Alexander H. gave it a7:
It takes a whole lot of game to get an 8 from me, an overwhelming amount of content and fresh gameplay to get a 9, and a damn-near masterpeice that rarely upset, or angers me to get a 10, not including difficulty. Sadly, even though Dark Mirror qualifies for an 8, it fails simply by not offering anthing ever-lasting or suprising to the table. What I mean is once you play the single-player for what it is, you'll come to understand you've just played Splinter Cell in disquise. That's not to suggest the single player game's not good. Just not as heart-pounding or exiting as other reviewers claimed it to be. I mean, I can understand when you're exscorting someone across the level, and an alarm is pulled and suddenly dozens of guards are after you, it might "excite you", but to me, never once in this game did I find a reason to sweat, or tighten my grip on the PSP. All I had to do was snap behind a wall, aim at the enemy's head and tap 'R'. Whats so exciting about that? Not to mention the game got a little boring after a while. And the multiplayer, oh my god, is laggerific. One explosion and you're dude seem like he's floating in the air before he falls down. There's that much lag. I mean, I did have a few good matches but once it gets past 2v2, you're in for alot of the matrix. (Socom multiplayer on PSP flowed alot smoother and was more fun to play in my opinion) And what's up with the room getting disbanded after the match is over!? I did like the fact that if you play multiplayer alot, you can unlock cool weapons you can use before ever match, but if my review was any indication, I want be having any cool weapons any time soon. So, Overall, It's a good game, mainly if you're playing by yourself, and worth a rent. But if I was you, i'd save my money for Vice City Stories, Socom:FTB2, or Metal Gear: Portable Ops.
psp rocks gave it a10:
well...have to with bob here about elctronic gaming...those losers must not have the played the game through upto atleast 25%...cause yes the controls do take some time getting used too...but hey once u get the hang of it u will just about forget the need for a second analog control...another killer app for the psp...and also probably the best game for a handheld device.
Nick S. gave it a9:
Genius. Graphics are very good, not as polished as GTA but given the dynamics of the game, its not a bad accomplishment. Sound, music and above all voices are outstanding. Sadly the controls can let you down but they did the best they could do with the PSP's flawed hardware, I would like to have seen an option to increase or decrese sensitivity, like in Half Life and most 1st shooter games. I haven't finished the game but as far as I'm concerned I don't need to in order to give this a score of 9. The multiplayer is excellent, being dominated in every game just proves how good you can get with the controls, I was being killed with headshots regularly while running, I'll only go back when I've mastered the game. All in all, I can only but recommend this game, even if you don't like this genre.
DjFIL gave it a5:
I don't know why this game is getting such high marks. The graphics are good. The story is good (even though i'd rather less cgi sequences and more gameplay). But I really hate using face buttons (X, Tri, [] & 0) for aiming... and the auto aim isn't very good in this game. Socom is a way better game then this. And (even though it had camera control issues) I enjoyed Splinter Cell PSP more then this. I guess this is good for some, but good shooters are rare on PSP, and this is not one on my list of good PSP shooters.
