Summary
Players can challenge others from all over the world via multiplayer battles using a wireless connection as they command their worms through clashes that take place in famous battles of the past, as well as fictional fights of the future. Battles include the Spanish Armada conquest in "Pirates!," the frontlines of real war in "World War II" and laser shooting spaceships in "Space War!," among others. In addition to the classic Deathmatch mode, the game also includes robust new single and multiplayer modes such as Rope Race, Fort, Puzzle and Campaign modes that challenge players to use new strategies and teamwork to defeat their enemies. The new Firing Range allows gamers to test their weapons skills, including 11 new weapons like the Bunker Buster and Buffalo of Lies as well as classics such as the Super Sheep, Concrete Donkey and the Holy Hand Grenade. Gamers that take the battle online will be able to demonstrate their Worms combat prowess with daily updated stats and leaderboards on the official Worms website. Players will also enjoy the new, in-depth customization options including custom landscape and team flag editors in addition to modified hats, tombstones and victory dances for their worm teams. OW2 looks and sounds great, and offers more content than any Worms before it. It's an excellent value and a wonderful addition to the PSP's action-strategy lineup.

Win or lose, joyous or torturous, this game is a blast and a non-stop addiction.

Team 17 has crafted yet another entry into this fine franchise, and the overall results are nothing short of solid. Worms is a highly simplistic, yet very addictive and engaging strategy game that is sure to have you coming back to it very, frequently.

Much like almost every iteration of the series, Worms: Open Warfare 2 does not seek to completely revolutionize the series, but merely adds another layer of weapons, modes, and customizations.

What you have here is a solid game and an excellent purchase for anyone owning a portable system.

The impressive collection of modes and customizable options, including an extensive level editor, gives you plenty of play time out of this single UMD, and the amount of strategy that stems from the weapon set diversity is stellar.

Certainly one of the best multiplayer experiences on the PSP. [Issue#157, p.94]
GameSpy
THQ and Team 17 have not only turned out one of the best Worms game of all time, but a maddeningly addictive title that stands on its own as a truly excellent piece of PSP software.

From the fully-featured multiplayer to a host of carefully crafted single player modes, Worms hasn't been this fresh in years.

A must-have. [Oct 2007, p.107]

Open Warfare 2 is pretty near perfect in terms of presentation, balance and content. That basically means we don’t need to see another Worms game ever, and if we do, it had better be somehow more original and better than this. So that’s it. We’re happy now, thank you very much Team 17.

While it may churn over the same ground, this is a feature-laden package that will have you wriggling with pleasure.

A classic game with a great presentation and tons of options and gameplay modes, but nothing really new. Anyone who’s played the game in the last decade or so knows what they’re in for here.

Being able to see more of the battlefield due to the widescreen form factor of the PSP is nice for aiming.

A more complete package than its predecessor that keeps stubbornly to what Worms is about. [Oct 2007, p.84]

Worms: Open Warfare 2 hardly reinvents the wheel but is a much better package this time round. It also can be a lot of fun.

In many ways, it's the best Worms yet. There's a substantial amount of weapons, a gargantuan level of options and plenty of multiplayer fun to be had. However, it is just Worms, a game that's appeared on every format known to man for the last 13 years, and follows extremely quickly after last year's dubious handheld debut. Ultimately the question remains, how much Worms do you need?

Though the additions and adjustments to the standard Worms experience aren't game changing, the playful violence and light strategy still hold up.

If you're a veteran of the series and you want something new, there are a few new options and some sprucing up compared to past games, but this isn't the end-all-be-all for the franchise, and the customization really isn't implemented as well as it could be.

Showing its age in terms of ingenuity. Shame. [Oct 2007, p.84]

Noby W. gave it a2:
Would have been ok but nobody plays it online an multiplayer sucks for that reason not worth your money.
Webster gave it a10:
For critics to deduct points from Worms for not being innovative is ridiculous. The gameplay is classic, deducting points for it is like deducting points from a Tetris game for its gameplay or Pacman for its gameplay. This is the most balanced, best presented, fun and strategic Worms yet. Worms is a great game for a handheld, and this game capitalizes on that. Worms fans should be pleased and this is a great package for newbies too. Most highly recommended.
Bobby C. gave it a10:
A complete portable worms masterpeice.
Bill R. gave it a10:
This game will keep you playing for many months, a must buy for any psp owner.
Bob S. gave it a10:
This game is awesome, it could possibly be the most feature rich game on the psp. Yes its still worms but worms is great an they put a few spins on the gameplay like new weapons and new physics elements like the water rising effect in the pirate level. My only gripe about the game is a very minor bug that makes you wait the cpu's hole turn even if hes down but its only an extra 30 seconds an doesnt hurt the gameplay an doesnt happen every time. I think this game should be a must buy.
Ole B. gave it a9:
Much stronger game than its predecessor: It has faster loading times, faster AI, a dozen new weapons, a long career mode, puzzle mode, a shop where you spend points to buy new stages, sounds, weapons & more, good music, and last, but not least, online multiplayer with support for clans, buddies, downloads, leaderboards & more. Definitely one of the most fun and polished strategy/action games on the PSP. Superb work by Team17. It deserves a better score than 62 like PSM3 Magazine UK give it. I sincerely hope this game won't be overseen like a few past games have.
