Summary

Taking advantage of the same proven technology that brought "Resident Evil 4" to Wii, Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop delivers a more immersive, intuitive and interactive experience as players use the Wii Remote to shoot, slash and bludgeon their way through a zombie infested shopping mall, fighting for survival. Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop follows the harrowing tale of Frank West, an overly zealous freelance journalist on a hunt for the scoop of a lifetime. In pursuit of a juicy lead, he makes his way to the small suburban town of Willamette only to find that it has become overrun by zombies. Frank escapes to the local shopping mall, thinking it will be a bastion of safety but it turns out to be anything but. It's a true struggle to survive the endless stream of enemies, but players have full reign of a realistic shopping centre and its varied stores offering an endless supply of real and makeshift weapons to fight off the flesh-hungry mob. If Frank is running low on health he can pay a visit to one of the many restaurants or cafes for a meal in order to restore his energy and continue the fight. The game is split into a series of individual cases, all of which Frank must complete in order to gain vital information that allow him to piece together the truth behind the horrendous epidemic. In addition to the cases, players are faced with the dilemma of deciding the rescue priority of the residents of Wilamette who also sought sanctuary in the mall. Depending on the player’s skill, some may not be so fortunate as each rescue needs to be undertaken in a set time period, therefore players may need to delay completion of a case in order to save a fellow human. Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop's infectious humor delivers some welcome relief from the incessant tide of zombies with players able to dress Frank up in a variety of comedic costumes and take on the undead hordes with a selection of improvised and sometimes highly ineffective weapons such as a toy sword or a football. Destructoid

Other than the boss fights and the graphics, there isn't too much I'd change about this game. As a huge fan of Resident Evil 4, Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop offered a similar take on that experience, but with more enemies on screen, more melee weapons, more comedy, and more action.

Capcom gives us a wiimote to go shopping again in Willamette. Probably, Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop had deserved an independent design, instead of a port, but it still can be a good survival-horror action choice for gamers who don't own an Xbox 360.

Waggling the Wii Remote to kill zombies never gets old, and the plethora of unconventional weapons (shopping cart, park bench) add lots of variety; and aiming weapons with the remote is much easier than using two analog sticks.

Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop has little to do with the original game for Xbox 360, since the gameplay and philosophy behind it are completely different. It also suffers from a series of problems that make it frustrating at times. This game seems to be a spin-off rather than a real conversion, but it's still a challenging action-packed title.

It's a little rough around the edges, so we'd still recommend Resident Evil 4 as the premiere Wii survival horror game, but if you want to dismember the undead in a non-lightgun setting, it's a pretty solid choice.

A more flexible save system is also a step in the right direction. Yet, the repetitive mission objectives and moronic AI ensure that the enjoyment you glean from it will be directly proportional to how much you enjoy using new weapons to kill zombies.

IGN

A lot of corners have been cut to get this game on the Wii and the result is not the impressive next-gen experience it was on the 360. Rather, it's a breezy weekend diversion with some fun gameplay and subpar graphics.

A real let-down. There are some great ideas in here but they're just not executed very well. Stick to "Resident Evil 4."

It may not be on the same level as the original, but it holds its own among other Wii titles. Admittedly, this one is for newcomers instead of those already blood-soaked from the original.

Dead Rising Chop Till You Drop is a more than decent adaptation of the essence which made such a great game of the original Capcom title. Unfortunately, the technical part of the game is not elaborated enough, with several flaws that diminish that game experience and thus affect gameplay. Despite everything, it is an enjoyable game, provided we can forgive its flaws.

Chop Till You Drop is not too bad, but if you have an Xbox 360 Dead Rising is a much better purchase. The Wii version comes short on certain aspects and is therefore not worth the full price.

The many changes made to the original formula in order to use the Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition engine totally transforms the game into something new. Limited controls and technology, as well as the sandbox-less gameplay, have made the title into an average, linear zombie-killing experience.

A zombie of the original. Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop apes the genuine article and offers a little fun, but there's not much vitality behind its glassy stare and whatever spirit it once possessed has long since departed.

The idea is nice but the execution is lacking - that's not a bad summary for Chop Till You Drop as a whole, an experience that could have been much better than it is. As it stands, Capcom's latest Wii port is the worst of the bunch, a substandard experience that just doesn't hold up to modern standards, let alone those of the series itself.

Very hard to recommend. It's certainly better than not playing Dead Rising at all but should not be considered for purchase. A rental at best, Chop Till You Drop isn't a game you'll play till you drop.

Eurogamer

As a standalone experience, it's shambling but lovable: two parts quirkiness to one part tedium. Compare it to the original, however, and it's hard to escape the fact that a once-brilliant game has been put through a mangler. Somewhere along the way, Capcom's zombie apocalypse has been bludgeoned into a zombie compromise, and, unless you really like poodles, the Wii offering can't really be said to add anything that the 360 version was lacking.

Meristation

Dead Rising: Chop till you Drop has finally made it to the Wii with a joyful gameplay system that lacks a graphics engine too old, without any trace of the camera. The story's very much the same, without any changes at all, except one; we've lost the sandbox element to include a linear mechanic. Its a good game though not exactly as good a the Xbox 360 version.

Should veteran Dead Risers bother with this admirable, but limited port of the original? Not really. But should newcomers to the series give it a spin? Given the scarcity of genuine, old-school arcade content on the Wii (soon to be remedied by MadWorld), I'd say yes.

If you’ve never seen the 360 version, CTYD might entertain you for a little while, but that’ll only be because you won’t know what you’re missing out on by playing the stripped down version of the original game. And developers/publishers, please stop looking at the Wii as nothing more than a port machine. If you’re going to rerelease a game, make sure it’s been significantly retooled, reworked, redesigned, and upgraded enough to justify the game’s existence.

lexiphanicism gave it a7:
Having purchased and played DR:CtyD, I have to say a solid 7 is an appropriate score for the game. Anything more ignores the limitations it suffers in comparison to the original; anything less ignores the inherent decency of the control system and the overall fun of the gameplay itself. Here's a breakdown of my opinion regarding issues specific to this port: Things I enjoy about CtyD: Easily manipulable aiming reticule Enhanced zombie AI Zombie poodles (They're fun to kill) New weapons Some new quests Kill drops (Doesn't make much sense, but it works, and I like the idea of eating something that fell out of an undead poodle. Am I sick?) Things I do not enjoy: Zombie parrots (Fun once, annoying ever after) Survivor AI (It seems worse, if possible.) Running zombies (It violates canon, danggit!) Inability to jump Inability to carry more than one melee weapon (2 if you count large/special weapons) Things toward which I am ambivalent: Graphics (Adequate, but nothing special) The Menu scheme (It's different, not worse) Path blockages (Done to increase challenge, which it does, but feels limiting) Stores no longer have multiple items available in them--pretty much one store, one weapon. Anyway, speaking personally, I can testify that it IS possible for a die-hard fan of the 360 game to enjoy CtyD. Would I play it if I had the original and the money for an X-box? Likely not. Is it good enough to satisfy my addiction in the meantime? Definitely.

David K gave it an8:
I actually find it much more enjoyable than many said. I've never played the original, so this might be why i'm not caught up with comparing it all the time but can focus on this game. I'm sure this will offend many, but I kinda like it better than RE4 - and thats just because of the modern setting in a mall to begin with. Sadly, but not surprisingly, it isn't as atmospheric as RE4. But on the other hand there no such fun as zombie-mowing in the park!

Fozzy gave it a7:
I've played both versions now. For the sake of argument the gameplay is pretty similar. Sure, the graphics are turned down and there's not as many zombies on screen at a time, but for those new to Dead Rising, that's not an issue. The controls feel a little awkward but it's not terrible. Of course, they had to "Wii-atize" the game and add motion controls. Why people feel the need to add a remote "swing" to swing a bat in a game is beyond me. But I like the gun aiming mechanism. Biggest critisims is the missing ability (mini-game even) of taking photos. It gave "Frank West" more depth and the whole opening scene just bizzare because they cut out all the parts of Frank seeing the events happening in the city. It is truly one of the greatest parts of the game and it's gone. At the end of the day, it's a game where you get to kill zombies in a mall. That's all I'm asking for. =)

Jeremy V gave it an8:
Hard to rate being that I just got the game but in some ways... not so much. I don't own an X-Box 360 so I don't have to obligingly compare its graphics to a machine made for graphics. Instead, I get to judge it on its own Wii merits and so far, this is a lot of fun. It seems like you can use a ridiculous amount of items as weapons. The cut scenes are good. The story is creepy. It's a rockin' zombie-killin' good time! My only real complaint is that you can't jump over everything. I'm not a fan of having large, sprawling locations that feel like you should be able to go anywhere you want without actually being able to. That's too much of a tease and annoying when you really need to hop a small divide to escape but for some random reason cannot. The controls are great, the graphics are serviceable, the sound is great. (The controls may be Resident Evil 4 but the graphics aren't quite there.) But what do I care about? I care most about the fun factor and thanks to the controls, which is what Wii games should be about IMO, coupled with the concept, this game has me hooked. I dare say it will have you hooked too. Swing away.

crap bag gave it a9:
This game is awesome. The team that created Re4 is the team that work on chop til you drop, and it shows. The targeting mechanic is a huge upgrade from the 360 version, and frank moves far more fluidly. I love that guns are a larger focus in this version and everything else is wicked fun, but entirely optional. The camera is no longer used by the player either which makes me happy. I hated the camera. The graphics don't seem to have taken a major hit. They're of course not as good, but there is so much blood spray, zombie poodles, and parrots along with so much ammunition from downed enemies the graphics are hardly a factor. Thank you capcom for fixing the 360 issues. You have created a superior version.
