Summary
As de Blob, the player uses the city as a playground by rolling and bouncing through the streets crushing as many Leech Bots as possible. The Leech Bots are the machines/creatures that extract color from the city and carry this "liquid color" inside them. To restore color to the city de Blob crushes the Leech Bots, absorbs the pigment they carry, and uses the pigment/paint to color everything it touches. de Blob is forced to take on the evil INKT Corporation agents who want the world devoid of color because "color is a crime!" Constantly under attack, the Blob in his own quirky way fights back. Rolling, bouncing and crushing are his weapons. The object is to color and/or stencil as many buildings in the city as possible while avoiding the enemy. Race against time moving at Blob speed, or choose your own pace. The city is a canvas and de Blob is your paint brush! Vast cityscapes and urban sprawl offers players the freedom to explore and make their own game-experience. Complete levels as a fun, animated superhero who transforms a hostile city into a vibrant, colorful, happy place. Creative activities and puzzles give immediate and continuous rewards throughout the entire city. Multiple challenges must be found and accepted, which can guide the player through to the next level – the destination and objective for one challenge can be the starting point of the next. Successful completion of challenges earns rewards such as points, time, environmental improvements, additional challenges, and liberating zones. An intricate single player campaign, as well as a multiplayer experience that supports two to four competitors via split screen. Sprint challenges – short bursts of gameplay where the player attempts to accomplish a single skill-based objective. Replay sprint levels to earn higher achievement ratings, which enable the gamer to unlock additional content from the Art Gallery. [THQ]

With such complete attention to the teensiest of details, it’s obvious that de Blob was more than just another project for all those involved; it captured their imaginations and became a labour of love.

A wonderfully simple, infectiously enthusiastic joyride that maintains the spirit of the original while adding depth. If enough gamers notice it during the holiday deluge of sequels, de Blob could become a cult hit.

A treat of a game that's as creative and funky as it is new and interesting - we can't recommend it enough. [Nov 2008, p.77]
HellBored
Great gameplay combines with a strong control scheme, superb visuals, and light-hearted music to make de Blob not just a great puzzle-come-platform, but a great game.

Easily one of the best third-party titles released on the Wii. Hopefully a sequel will add a better combo system.

It is a rare game that can appeal equally well to both the casual and hardcore crowds, yet de Blob does just that. It is a brilliant fusion of simple mechanics and in-depth play that deserves checking out.

de Blob is defined by its pure unadulterated fun. While it doesn't have the best platforming, the most complicated puzzles, or the most involved action mechanics, as a whole it's something to behold.

The visuals are wonderful, the music is happy and the multiplayer modes are as fun as the single-player campaign. No matter how old you are, this game will paint a smile on your face.

As a PC title, de Blob was a charming game, but as a Wii title the game stands out as among the best on the system.

In a sea of brown, grey and black sameyness, this is a rainbow life-raft of joy. Ignore all the joyless people who moan, and get splatting.

This title may not have the most varied or difficult gameplay, but it is incredibly fun to play, and the different modes and goals give it some decent replay value. de Blob is an awesome title, and while it may not be the most action-packed or drama-filled title on the market, it provides countless hours of colorful fun.

One part Katamari Damacy, two parts of the humor in Rayman Raving Rabbids, de Blob takes everything both of those titles did right and adds it to a unique and entertaining story and gameplay mechanic.

de Blob is an undeniably infectious game. On all fronts, the game is polished and high quality, making it one of the best third-party titles available for the Wii.

But if you’re a fan of Jet Grind Radio, Katamari Damacy, or any stylish, pseudo-sandbox style game, then get de Blob today. You won't be disappointed.

With de Blob you get a well-done skillful game on the Wii, which will make both casual as well as hardcore gamers happy. The controls are easy to get into and after a while one doesn't want to let the WiiMote / Nunchuk out of hand again.

de Blob has style, it’s got simple but great gameplay, and it offers enough challenge to keep even hardcore platforming enthusiasts happy, while not alienating the casual gaming market. As far as third party games go, this is the cream of the crop for the Wii, and hopefully, other developers will sit up and take notice.

After spending my time with it though I have to say that this is a solid third-party entry that a lot of people need to play.

I think de Blob is one of the best third-party efforts to come over to Wii in a long time. This is a fun, stylized 3D platformer that oozes atmosphere and shines with amazingly slick presentation and polish.

What's here is just as wild and wacky as the original and it's a benchmark game for the Wii. If you own a Wii, this is one game you don't want to overlook.

Yes the controls can be imprecise and some may balk at the unfriendly save system but the colors, the whimsy and the style keep things entertaining. Most importantly, the game is just plain fun. Oozing with style and Day-Glo colored antics, de Blob takes platforming and transforms it with a beautiful new coat of paint.

Along with the bright and colorful visuals, the music really plays a big part in de Blob as well.

de Blob's Katamari-like premise is simple yet compelling, but repetitive challenge types and a general lack of gameplay variety keep it from being essential.

de Blob shows the world that the power of ideas is more powerful than the power of a big budget. Blue Tongue isn't a very prominent videogames company, but they have brought us an incredible sensation of gameplay based on the simple concept of covering a monochrome world with an original explosion of colour.

Probably the best and worst thing about de Blob is that it's got 'Destined For Cult Status' written all over it. It's certainly not the first game to mix platform and puzzle elements, but the fact it manages to do so in such a clever, endearing, stylish and instantly playable way makes this a game we'd heartily recommend to anyone who thirsts for a 'proper' Wii game, whatever that is.

Admittedly, there's not a ton of variety (there are only four basic mission types), but it remains fun throughout thanks to extremely polished controls, visuals, and music, as well as a surprisingly cool (and funny) story. [Nov 2008, p.98]
GameSpy
It's a beautifully immersive game that really takes advantage of the Wii's hardware to create a vivid and memorable experience.

de Blob isn't all it could have been, mainly down to the odd awkward jump and a slightly too simplistic first half, but it's still an extremely polished and well put together game.

de Blob is fantastic fun that provides hours of enjoyable gameplay and will leave you tapping your foot and humming the soundtrack for weeks to come.

The Blob is a very high quality product with almost no flaws whatsoever. But most importantly The Blob is original. It's a form of art and a videogame in one. The Blob is one of the few Wii games that can actually hold our attention for more than a couple of hours. The game is just one big splash of fun.

Magic is the word that best describes this game. Coloring of grey objects was never so fun – creative players heartily welcomed. Better camera would help next time. [Dec 2008]
Zentendo
The game's presentation is really awesome. Maybe it's not technically impressive, but the artistic design of the visuals is really enjoyable and a large part of what makes De Blob such a joy to play. Painting Chroma City is a fresh and satisfying experience. Multiplayer modes are fun and the way the graphics and sound combine is one of this game's greatest features.

Essentially, de Blob seems the perfect game for Wii. Making use of its very pleasing graphics, very well made and fluid, for a Wii fan, this is certainly a recommended game.

It seems impossible to dislike De Blob. Linear and slightly repetitive it may be, but it's the most colourful and ambitiously fresh project the Wii's seen to date.

De Blob is just one of those games that brings a smile to your face. You wouldn't think that rolling around in a ball coloring the environment would be this fun but it is. It's well adjusted to the Wii control and despite the hardware limitations the game looks great. There are flaws, but the overall experience is just pure fun.

deBlob is a game that is fun to play, very well polished and it reveals that Third Party developers can also make quality games for the Wii.

de Blob is a fantastic experience, but one that I wish had more depth and challenge. I think this is the start of a great franchise (game, toys, or TV show) and one that will surely improve in its next iteration.

The title has some great ideas and produces a great, relaxed atmosphere. The game is missing the most important element to a game: the gameplay. [Oct 2008, p.105]

de Blob relies on its central theme of using color to liberate, which is well developed and a sheer joy to play.

It may be a repetitive task too far to be truly great, but it shows that a little bit of colour certainly goes a long way.

The most charming part of the game is how the music you hear while you play is tied directly to your art project. Each "mood" is a base groove, that starts off pretty slow and lacking in energy, but as you add color to the environment things get pretty jammin'.

De Blob's wickedly funny story gives the game a wonderful charm. It may have its flaws, but De Blob is exactly the kind of game we’d like to see more of on Wii - bright, playful and gosh darn fun.

We were genuinely hoping that de Blob would cater to all types of gamers, but ultimately found ourselves disappointed by its lack of development and attachment.

Barnee B gave it a10:
One of the best games on the system. It's not just for kids, dont let be fooled by the charming visuals! Funny story, beautiful graphics, easy gameplay, but there's some depth to it as well. My only gripe about is the repetitive mission types, but even with that it's one of the most polished games I've played. I think we should all support games like this!! Developers take note!!!
DJ T gave it an8:
I like to group this type of game in with boom blox, or elebits - it's one of these "harmless" type fun for everyone type game where the object is to add color back to a world that has been turned gray by evil forces. It's a fun game. The controls are good - i'm a little hesitant so say there's a lot of replay, but it's a fun concept and worth keeping in your collection to pick up from time to time. There's a bit to unlock, and the ability to go back and play the levels in different modes, adds a little extra life to the title. Pick it up used at Gamestop - if you hate it, hey, return it in 7 days.
Ruben de Dios gave it a9:
What a game, It is one of the most addictive games a have played lately. And is as good for hardcore games as for casual gamers too. Incredible grafics, responsive controls, Ass easy or hard as you want, and plenty of replay valeue. I am in love wih it's escetics. Only Flow a dodgy camera.
R G gave it a6:
One of the most overrated games of our time. Basically, your blob jumps around to either paint buildings or kill enemies. No depth or varied gameplay. It is the electronic equivalent of Tom Sawyer tricking you into whitewashing his fence.
The DiPY gave it a10:
What an amazing game! It looks brilliant, especially in ED. The music is also great to listen to, especially as it changes as you paint things. There's also plenty to do and loads of secrets to uncover. I've been waiting for a decent Wii game for a while now, and I think I've finally found one!
Dan A. gave it an8:
This is quite easily the best Wii game since Wario: Land Shake It, but the first one worth buying since way back when Boom Blox/Mario Kart Wii came around, and in an arguable case, it's better than both. Well, definitely better than MKWii, but it's if anything equal to or slightly below Boom Blox. de Blob is unique, and it's something that benefits most from Wii hardware, and I think that's why so many great Wii games like this are coming from left field. On the PS2, de Blob would be a mediocre game with very little appeal, but with the Wii's controls and setup, it's a great experience. I felt the same way about Boom Blox. It never would've worked anywhere else but the Wii. de Blob is a must-have for Wii owners. The system's only got about 10-15 truly great games, and even less that you can't get on another console in better quality. So, do yourself a favor, and when a great exclusive, no matter how weird or not your style comes around, buy it. Support the movement.
