Summary

Heading back to the early days of the Dragon Ball story, players control Kid Goku as he sets out on fantastic adventures with his friends. The title faithfully reproduces the uniqueness and special humour of the early Dragon Ball series, while adding an original blend of action and adventure to the mix. With the original Japanese music and voiceover included for maximum authenticity, Dragon Ball: Revenge of King Piccolo offers fans a dazzling new experience with the characters and universe they know and love. The visuals in Dragon Ball: Revenge of King Piccolo take the series to a new level by faithfully reproducing on-screen the original drawings of legendary Dragon Ball artist Akira Toriyama down to the finest pen strokes. Thanks to the high-quality, state-of-the-art graphics, fans immerse themselves in the Dragon Ball universe like never before. Game modes include Story mode which follows Kid Goku from the Red Ribbon Saga to the King Piccolo Saga with the ability to replay previously completed stages, and the unlockable VS mode where players can take different unlocked characters into battle. With in-game collectables, a host of unlockables, and more fun, fights and adventure than ever before all delivered in dazzling 3D, Dragon Ball: Revenge of King Piccolo is the definitive Dragon Ball videogame experience coming to Wii. Gamers' Temple

As much as I fell in love with this game, it isn't going to please everyone. It is short, easy and can be difficult to follow if you aren't familiar with the story already. It also sports a dated design, and I can't see anyone but the superfans forgoing all the other amazing games out right now to play this one.

Almost all fans of Dragon Ball will love Revenge of King Piccolo. The only annoying downside is that not all conversations have voice-overs, which makes you miss out on some of the typical humour. The gameplay feels a tad old, especially since you can compare it to Double Dragon. Personally, I loved that, since it's simple and addictive, whether you like Dragon Ball or not.

Cheat Code Central

The main story mode is short, and there isn't enough depth to the battle system to keep tournament mode relevant for long. Still, Dragon Ball fans will still have a great time with this one.

The combination of classic game genres make for a title that is balanced, engaging, and loyal to the franchise. Once more, if you are a fan, don't hesitate to try this one out.

Dragon Ball: Revenge of King Piccolo isn't the best game about Goku and his friends, but it's an awesome way to introduce yourself in an accessible and fast pace gameplay. Also, the game's fidelity is prominent, so fans will be happy seeing Goku flying Nimbus once again.

The game is a nice action/adventure, with an interesting combat system. But when it comes to the beat'em up section, it lacks depth and the fun disappears.

Worth Playing

In short, Dragon Ball: Revenge of King Piccolo is a good, but not great, brawling platformer.

With the beat 'em up genre making a resurgence lately, future developers need to take some notes from this great, but flawed, tale from Dragon Ball.

IGN

There’s nothing wrong with a good beat-em-up, and that’s exactly what Dragon Ball: Revenge of King Piccolo is. Combining classic 2D style arcade brawling with a simple fighting game mechanic for added two player support, Wii’s latest Dragon Ball game is a fairly polished, well executed, mindless endeavor.

Despite its flaws this is still a good game that Dragon Ball origins fans shouldn't let escape.

Meristation

Goku's on his best on the latest Wii adaptation of his particular story. This time we'll facing with King Piccolo in a beat 'em up that contains different platform aspects and, what's more important, very interesting gameplay mechanics that everyone will enjoy. It's not perfect, but a good choice for next Christmas.

It's a little pricey to recommend for purchase at face value but either a used copy or a drop in price might warrant a purchase (especially for fans of the series).

Armchair Empire

There isn’t anything overly new or innovative in Revenge of Piccolo. It’s just a very straightforward brawler that will appeal to younger fans of the Dragonball franchise.

Dragon Ball: Revenge of King Piccolo is a game that will probably please fans, but it's undoubtedly an half-baked beat'em up, with annoying technical flaws and serious gameplay issues.

It might not be too much of a challenge for most gamers, but it still will give them an idea on why the anime has been so popular for all these years.

It's a shame that Revenge of King Piccolo becomes essentially a mediocre fighting game in the latter part of the adventure. [Dec 2009, p.88]

Dragon Ball: Revenge of King Piccolo for the Wii has all the right moves but falls flat when it comes to the enemies and the lack of real innovation.

It's full of bluster, but it's not going to provide hours of friendship. [Dec 2009, p.95]

An old-fashioned platformer with no challenge, no depth and no real point. Buy some classics on Virtual Console instead. [Winter 2009, p.50]

Gaming Age

While I think the idea behind a 3D brawler in the Dragon Ball universe is a decent idea, I can't see the point in a game that only allows you to fight as Goku, and keeps up the overall length that this game does. It does try to offer some replay value, but not having additional characters to check out outside of the Tournament mode is a waste, and not what I was hoping for with this game.

Warm, colorful and easy to get into, but still a bit of a parantesis. It's the lack of variation that makes this game stumble in the long run.

This game is really worth it if you're a fan of the Dragon Ball original series, simply for the gorgeous cutscenes and good gameplay, but if you're not a DB fan don't get this.
