Summary

Chocobo and Cid, Final Fantasy mainstays-turned-treasure hunters, are magically transported to a mysterious town whose people’s memories are lost with each bell toll of the clocktower. One day, a strange boy named Raffaello arrives and creates dungeons of memories to help the townspeople remember who they are. Now it's up to Chocobo to journey through the dungeons and retrieve everyone's memories! A gaming experience utilizing a variety of classic FINAL FANTASY job classes such as the knight, black mage and white mage to aid Chocobo in his fight against evil. Duel against friends via Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection in addictive card battles featuring popular FINAL FANTASY creatures in a unique 3D pop-up book style. Collect hidden letters throughout the adventure and form special phrases to unlock secret dungeons and job classes. The signature Mog House offers arcade-style mini-games that can be played with intuitive Wii Remote controls. [Square Enix]

As a gamer that has been burnt out by excessively cruel and repetitive dungeon crawlers in the past, the game never left me feeling overly drained and worn out. Chocobo’s Dungeon deserves at least a few hours of any adventurous Wii gamer’s time.

It’s a beautiful, deep, fun role-playing adventure, and certainly one of the best RPGs available for Wii.

If you can deal with the kiddie atmosphere and lackluster graphics, Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon provides an enjoyable gameplay experience.

Worth Playing

It takes out some of the frustration that makes the genre so inaccessible without sacrificing the challenge and accomplishment that make it so fun.

Cheat Code Central

An excellent and surprisingly deep game. This title does an excellent job of walking the fine line between being a Final Fantasy title and a dungeon crawler and gets the formula just right.

IGN

There's a great mix of gameplay styles here, from strategy to action to RPG. Square Enix's polished touch is all over this one, from the nice voice acting to the humorous dialogue.

It seems the CGI wizards at Square Enix hit another home run with the game and while the amount of CGI is actually much lower then what most Final Fantasy veterans will be used to, they will find what we do have is excellent.

It's definitely a game for RPG fanatics who go in more for the challenge than the plotline, and no doubt casual players who pick it up for the oh-so-cute cover art will be rather surprised by how brutally it savages their dignity (although a generous learning curve should help ease them into their suffering). Still, it's a definite success, taken on its own terms.

Chocobo's Dungeon takes a strict gameplay structure, bends it for the sake of accessibility and then builds something new on it to enhance it further without entirely breaking the game.

Chocobo's Dungeon isn't a traditional Final Fantasy game, but it's still loads of fun and very addictive.

For what it’s worth, Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon is the best Square-Enix game for a Nintendo home console since Final Fantasy VI (called Final Fantasy III at the time) hit SNES in the mid-90s.

Chocobo's Dungeon succeeds where the recent Pokémon Mystery Dungeon fails, by delivering a licensed dungeon crawler that is a credit to its franchise as well as its tradition.

By sacrificing and tweaking a number of the more niche aspects of the roguelike genre -- but not so many as to dilute the experience irrevocably -- Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon delivers an experience that is true enough to its roots to appeal to longtime fans, but also fresh and inviting enough to please newcomers.

Play.tm

The main complaint I would have about this game is that it doesn't push the boundaries technologically; it could feasibly have been done on the DS or the GameCube even, as it does not make any real use of the Wiimote and the graphics are decidedly last-generation.

Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo´s Dungeon is a correct spin-off of the Final Fantasy series. The game is designed for the beginner players with few experience in these kind of games, but is focused for the followers of the franchise too. The dungeon system is a little repetitive but the job classes and the minigames help to offer a great mix of gameplay.

Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo’s Dungeon is a welcome addition to the poor line-up of games on the Wii. Despite the rather poor visual presentation and almost infantile voice acting, the game is fun, even for more experienced players. The dungeons are exciting and challenging to play through, and the story is both interesting and lengthy enough to keep you playing.

If traipsing through multi-tiered dungeons for hours, leveling up a multitude of job classes and equipment, and keeping track of health, hunger and magic levels sets your heart aflutter, it doesn't get much better than Chocobo's Dungeon.

Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon is a game with a decent concept what eventually shows up in the storyline and gameplay. However, the downside of this all is the poorly translation and the somewhat disappointing graphics. In al fairness a pretty decent game, but never rises above the average spin-off game.

Chocobo's Dungeon does what it does best in one area only, the Mystery Dungeon area, and people unfamiliar to the formula will more than likely struggle to get into things. Having said that, it's the only game of its kind on Wii right now and by giving it a lot of time, Mystery Dungeon fans will get a lot out of it - given they don't mind the cruddy presentation.

A missed opportunity. Its gameplay is quite solid and forces the player to use tact and thought to complete all of the dungeons in the game; however, the randomly-generated dungeons really detract from its otherwise engaging gameplay.
