Summary
[WiiWare] Gyrostarr challenges you and up to three additional players to pilot your ships through a series of twisting, turning technoplasma tracks while battling a variety of deadly alien foes at ever-increasing speeds. While fighting and maneuvering, you must collect enough energy to activate the ancient warpgate at the end of each track. Succeed, and you can journey to the next, even deadlier track. Fail, and the gate will slam shut, destroying your ship. Enhance your ship with weapon pickups, coordinate attacks with your friends to fire powerful combined blasts and use your grapple to snag energy and pickups in the midst of combat. Control your ship with the Wii Remote controller, Nunchuk controller or Classic Controller, or use the "paired" control system that allows two players to use a connected Wii Remote and Nunchuk or Classic Controller at the same time. Offering 50 levels of intense action, powerful pickups, high-speed bonus levels and mayhem for up to four players, Gyrostarr is a killer arcade challenge. [Nintendo]

Zentendo
This is the kind of game that makes Wiiware a worthwhile feature, and shows that good hardcore games can be made for the system in any size.

Four players, over 50 levels and some addicting gameplay make this a game we love seeing as gamers.

Gyrostarr is a high score game at heart, so the lack of online leader boards to compete with distant friends is a shame. Still, fans of arcade-style twitch shooters should get plenty of entertainment out of the game, and it's reasonably priced.

Gyrostarr is a good deal for 700 Wii Points on WiiWare. The graphics and multiplayer aspects really shine and the new twist of collecting energy is fun.

There usually isn't enough enemy fodder to go around, as the game is inherently simpler than we'd want.

If you're a shooter fan and you don't demand a lot of variety in your gaming experience, Gyrostarr is a game you are likely to enjoy.

Old school sci-fi shooter with one trick but plenty of "high-score challenge" potential thanks to loads of levels and four-player split-screen support. [Oct 2008, p.75]
Kombo
Gyrostarr would be great fun as part of a larger, more elaborate arcade-style space shooter set free from WiiWare limitations, but on its own the total package falls short of enjoyment and expectations.

Gyrostarr is a decent game, but it needs some polish to be truly great.

Shoot, swerve, shoot, swerve. In space, no one can hear you snore. [Oct 2008, p.84]

George S. gave it a9:
It's a little rough around the edges, and it's a little easy at first (it doesn't really get intense until around level 20), but once it gets going, it's got a good old-school feeling to it where you sort of zone out & just react to the colorful enemies & explosions.
Thomas M. gave it a10:
Gyrostarr is very fun to play. It's challenging and addictive. Multiplayer is a blast!
Tbone C. gave it a9:
Gyrostarr is hands down the best downloadable Wii game on the market. It is extremely fun and features fast and exciting gameplay. Want to play alone....you can....want to play with friends...you can! The game looks and plays better then most retail games available. Gyrostarr rocks!
Kevin S. gave it a10:
Gyrostarr is one of those throw-back shooters that reminds me of a combination of Star Wars arcade and Tempest. Not only are these the most fun games IMO, this one is the best I've seen on the Wii so far. Multiplayer is an absolute blast! If you are looking for a fun diversion with your friends or siblings, congratulations, you have found it. Let's hope and pray that Wiiware keeps pumping out gems like this one!
Michael M. gave it a9:
This game is tons of fun! Especially with multiple players. The graphics and sound design are great!
Andrew A. gave it an8:
This is a great game, especially with multiple people. It takes a little bit of time for your eyes to adjust to the fast speeds, but it is well worth it. With no Star Fox game in sight, this is a great game to tide you over and enjoy some break neck speed gaming.
