This is a game that is filled with a simple yet endearing story, excellent game mechanics, eye-popping visuals, a challenging collection element, and a surprisingly bittersweet ending that will make you want to play it all over again, especially to see the once-static cinematics recreated in full 3D. Klonoa is one of the best platforming games of all time and this is a superior remake of an already flawless original.

$30 is a fair price to pay for a truly excellent, old school platforming experience.

But despite the short length and difficulty, Klonoa’s classic strengths far outweigh its long forgotten weaknesses. Whether you were a fan of the original or a curious newcomer, Door to Phantomile is a wonderful experience that deserves to reach the reception it has long deserved.

While platforming titles have certainly become more intricate and flashy over the years, Namco's update of their original Klonoa title proves that even a decade-old platformer can still hold its own when a developer puts the time and effort into it. If you're a platformer fan, you absolutely must own this wonderfully charming title.

Klonoa doesn't make amazing nor innovative use of the Wii's control capabilities, yet it is a shining example of how the bare minimum of pad usage can still create an excellent game.

The only “problems” with this game are that it's quite short (it's more like Portal-short in that it doesn't need to be any longer than it is) and that, like every remake and re-imagining, it doesn't bringing anything extraordinarily new to the table.

Klonoa's an excellent platforming title, especially for many players who may have missed out on it when it was originally released.

The Wii remake of Klonoa smartly left the original's essentials alone, expanding the formula with a vibrant, refreshed look, and a world that not only looks a lot better, but moves more fluidly. With plenty of variety, memorable boss battles, and a charming story, this is one ride you can't afford to miss...even if it is a rather short one.

Though short, Klonoa makes for a fantastic addition to the Wii library. With its beautiful new visuals, additional modes, and extremely challenging bonus rooms, Klonoa veterans as well as platformer fans would do well to pick up this budget-priced title.

Giant Bomb

The best part about this new remake of Klonoa is that it's going for the discounted price of $29.99. Considering the game won't take you an especially long time to finish, that's a great price for a classic platformer that still has some appeal for modern players while also being charming enough for younger kids to get into, as well.

Feels like a breath of fresh air on a system that normally spits out mini-game collections and crappy sports packs once a week. Klonoa is a remake of the original, and it follows the template brick for brick, but for newcomers to the series it’s a must-play entry into the world of platformers.

Klonoa: The Door to Phantomile is a polished version of a 2D-platformer that was released on the Playstation more than a decade ago. The gameplay is simple, well structured and offers just the right amount of challenge. Klonoa isn't one of the lengthiest games, but looks and plays great.

Klonoa is back in an awesome remake which represents one of the few games that, in the late 90's, fused the 2D traditional gameplay with the emerging and stunning 3D graphics. An authentic dream come true in Wii. Don't miss the opportunity of playing this game if you're a nostalgic gamer.

No matter how many years have passed, Klonoa is still a great platformer, and here on Wii it boosts a nice visual upgrade: however, Bandai Namco did nothing to improve the length of the game, which can be easily completed in five hours or so.

Game Informer

Despite all of these complaints, I can see fans of the original game enjoying this revival. It’s faithful to a fault, and I can think of plenty of older niche games that I would love to see get similar treatment. But if you’ve got no connection to the original, you’ll likely wonder what all of the fuss is about.

A mixed success. In terms of its childlike spectacle, Klonoa is quite brilliant, offering a number of memorable set-pieces and an unforgettable, wistful ambience throughout. But its challenges, while obvious, are often fiddly to overcome, and the sense of deep achievement that comes from completing one of Super Mario's tasks is here replaced by mere relief that it's over.

Puzzles are too child-friendly, their solutions more fiddly than mentally taxing. The pleasure earned from cracking Miymoto’s designs is instead targeted by flashy 2.5D level design – snaking sights that admittedly look wonderfully crisp on Wii – and set-pieces for the impatient. [Mar 2009, p.95]

Agostino gave it a10:
Very nice 2D/quasi 3D platform game. This is a jump back to Ghosts'n Goblins time but with colorful graphic and good soundtrack of our days.

nick gave it an8:
This game is very easy. I started playing at 2pm, by 10 I had finished very level, found every secret and still had around 20 lives left. The enemies are laughable, the only way you die is by falling. at one point I had over 40 lives - expect to finish all 14 levels in a single attempt. The graphics were nice enough, the controls are adequate and have no token wii 'shake the controller and pray' to mess around with. pretty good for a rental but not sure its worth the cash unless you'll bother with the time-trials or costume changes etc.

Peter A gave it a10:
A great game made even better by the wiimake. Looks great and plays great. No motion control but I'm not sure that would have worked well anyway. At thirty bucks it's well worth it even if it is only five hours long.
