The real triumph of Suda 51’s surreal, occasionally obscene romp is that behind all the cynicism, satire, and gory ultraviolence lies a true joy of creation that is too rarely seen in gaming. In playing No More Heroes, one gets the impression that the development team truly enjoyed making it, that no idea was thrown out for being too ridiculous or far-fetched, and that it is intensely aware of its own absurdity at all times. The excellent fourth-wall shattering ending is proof enough of that.

No More Heroes delivers two things the Wii is desperately lacking: top-tier mature gaming and pitch-perfect swordplay for a peripheral practically tailor-made for the purpose. Throw in infectiously fun gameplay, incomparable style, a wicked sense of humor, and a level of unhinged wackiness that makes Britney Spears look like the poster child for normalcy, and you've got a sure-fire Wii winner.

Like the Wii, none of it should work, but like the Wii, everything does. Brilliantly... No More Heroes is a love letter to videogames that never grows old, tired, or dull. All games deserve to be designed with such lunacy. [JPN Import; Feb 2008, p.56]

A truly satisfying adult game on the Wii—which is a true rarity. This game may not be everyone’s cup of tea with the violence, language and mature subject matter that hits you from everywhere, but despite the rated R subject matter, there is no denying that this is one of the best games available on the system.

The first time I heard about No More Heroes I was figuring I would get something similar to Killer 7 and that I would absolutely love it. Turns out I was right, I do love No More Heroes, despite the flaws it exhibits it still gets key things right, a strong story, memorable characters, style, and fun combat that doesn’t get boring.

It can be a little basic in places, and it isn’t a ‘paradigm shift’ in any sense, but it is proof that games can love their roots and use the quality of being a ‘game’ to give form to their stories – and excel at it. [Feb 2008, p.90]

No More Heroes easily ranks among the Wii's finest titles, busting a bunch of myths along the way. You say sword-based combat peaked with Twilight Princess? Wait until you slice a suit-wearing crony in half. The Wii can't do mature games? This game does it without the dark dreariness of just about every other violence-laden M-rated title. It could use a bit less filler, but No More Heroes is still a fine fight from the first blow to the last strike.

The characters are engaging, fun, quirky, messed up, and easy to either fall in love with or hate. Santa Destroy itself is full of so many nooks and crannies that any player anal about that kind of thing will easily be able to spend several hours searching for hidden back alleys for dumpsters and lovikov balls. The game is fun, easy to grasp, has a lot of replay value (trust me), and tells an engaging story.

There are issues with the sensitivity of the motion controls – as there are in almost every Wii title, and the overworld is a vacuous waste of memory with some terrible pop-in, but when you excise that from the combat scenarios, the humour, the style and the creativity that seeps out of most elements in No More Heroes, we can't help but get enthused about this game.

This is an experience people been waiting to have on the Wii for a long time - heart-pounding, sword-slashing, sword-parrying, suplex-flailing motions with a light saber, sorry, beam katana in hand. It may not be 1:1 ratio motion, but the experience can be just as exhaustingly fun.

The game boldly wears both its heart and its punk rock attitude on its sleeve, and manages a totally playable action control scheme for the Wii that uses the Wiimote without abusing it. One of the most gleefully "WTF" experiences you'll have in gaming this year. There are times in No More Heroes when we don't, but there are enough occasions when we do, and by the time you're the best assassin in town you'll either be glad that the destination was always worth it or arguing that it deserves another mark. There's a rare occurrence with most games that are so unique that their shortcomings are heavily outweighed by their strong points. It’s hilarious, completely matchless in its design, and hands-down one of the most passionate projects we’ve seen for Nintendo’s console. On the other hand, it’s obvious that open world designs aren’t Grasshopper’s strong suit, and while you wont be actually fighting or experiencing any “pure action” moments in the world, it’s a pain to trek through, and a painfully low-tech visual offering. Pop-in is everywhere, control is irritating at best, and the frame rate is all over the charts. It’s an absolute mess.

No More Heroes is practically two entirely different games mashed together. One is a funny, smart, stylish action game that never fails to entertain. The other is an open-world game that fails so completely in every regard that, despite all appearances, it's easier to question the developer's intent than it is to accept that it's what they were going for. Fortunately, you barely have to play that second game to enjoy the first one.

The least you can say is that this is a unique title with some genius moments. But the open world sections do more harm than good and the levels leading up to the assassins seem to lack some inspiration. But it’s still a unique experience that all Wii players should consider. [March 2008]

Dan S. gave it a10:
Behind Super Mario Galaxy, this is simply the best original Wii effort so far. The gameplay is excellent and gets better as you get deeper into the game. Although it is not perfect by any means, and if you frown upon the idea of watching the blood spurt out of your decapitated foes then it might not be for you. Every single enemy you encounter in the game will be finished in a deeply satisfying (and bloody) manner. Where it really shines, though, is its style, humour and originality. This game is a watershed for how far video games have come as a medium of expression.

Christopher A. gave it a7:
Fun game but still far too many bugs. The open world is atrocious. If you run into a car head on you just stop, no crashing no flipping over your bike you just stop. While if you hit a building you fly off your bike into it. The controls are way too touchy as well. Half the time i'm trying to do a drift turn, I end up making my bike jump ultimately leading to me crashing once again. On another note the frame rate is bad as well while driving one could notice the slowdown as your trying to turn your bike. The same can be said for the sword play. Constantly while fighting you have to pay attention to how your holding your remote( for the two stances) if you tilt just a little bit you be in low the whole time your think you have the remote held in a high stance. Framrate is also an issue here as the game doesn't seem to be able to handle a ton of enemies at once, although not as bad it's still very noticeable.( luckily there aren't a ton of enemies to fight at once til the later missions) I, like the other reviewer, bought this game the day it was released, and after finishing the story feel that it still needed a lot more work. Yet another promising title that was once again rushed.

Matt gave it a9:
Completely absurd and unpredictable. One of the few games out there that really defies classification and description. Play it and discover the Wii's most ridiculous gem.

Douglas J. gave it a10:
I'm hooked on this. This is by far the greatest sand box game I've ever played. For a game with sand box traits, it's much more than your standard run around and jack stuff game. The story itself goes very deep, with intrigueing plot points and extremely well written dialog and sequences. More care was taken with this game than with any other sand box game I've played. Awesome stuff.

Debra O. gave it a10:
It's all in a day's work. Wake up, slaughter, go shooting for the next highest rated killer on the block and gain his rating. Then go kill some more and move on to the next poor fool who would dare try to defend his ranking against you. Sounds standard? Trust me, it isn't. This game does it better than anything else on the Wii right now. Ah, sweet sweet fighting game, where have you been all these long months? I finally have a fighter/action game on the Wii that is worthy of the system!

Scott Taulbee gave it a10:
This game is complete win. The most stylish and over-the-top title ever, Travis Touchdown inhabits a bizarre world of blood, coins and lightsabers. Highly recommended!

Fork D. gave it a10:
Probably the best Wii game to date and, with three assassins to go, already one of my top five favorite games of all time. I don't want it to end. It's totally unique; a truly daring piece of social commentary that positively skewers its intended audience. Graphics are stylized, shadows are inky-black, and dialoge/voice acting is dazzlingly cheesy. Numerous critics have complained about the open world segments. Yes, there's pop-in. Yes, the frame rate is dippy. However, no, it is NOT GTA. Everything in 'No More Heroes' is MUCH more focused. Where I would get lost (and eventually bored) with the totally non-linear, do-whatever-you-want nature of the GTA series, 'No More Heroes' gives you just enough stuff to do in the "open world" segments--find money, take on part time jobs, upgrade your character, go dumpster diving--before you're ready to get back into the main storyline. The brilliant combat sequences speak for themselves. The wrestling moves take a little practice (at least they did for me) but once you "get" them, they're second nature. Excellent game. It appeals to the 14 year old boy inside us who always wanted a huge motorcycle, a light saber, and a shot at being the best assassin in town.
