Summary
Okami tells the story of a mythical sun god who sets out to restore a dismal world, decimating the forces of evil who stand in the way by commanding the elements and mythical abilities the deity possesses. Mixing Japanese folklore and a stunning traditional Japanese art style, players must utilize an inventive control scheme to overcome the challenges and evil that await. By enhancing the unique gameplay, visual style and story line of Okami with the control of the Wii Remote, it is sure to be the ultimate version of the game. Originally designed for the PS2 and released in 2006, Okami now comes alive in an entirely new way on the Wii with its visually stunning art style and beautiful scenic 3D levels that have the appearance and texture of paper scrolls brushed with watercolor-like calligraphy art. Throughout the vibrant and distinctive surroundings, players must use the Wii remote to interact with a dynamic world and cast of characters. The blend of stylized graphics, movements and unique gameplay will result in a rich and dynamic experience never seen before. [Capcom]

For younger Twilight Princess fans, this is your true coming-of-age adventure...and for older gamers free of nostalgia's shackles, Okami provides a far more refreshing, creatively stimulating journey.

It's as well-designed as Zelda, as involving as Final Fantasy, and as beautiful as anything you've ever seen; it belongs with the best of the Zelda series at the very apex of its genre.

Okami is a stunning game experience through and through. It has depth and longevity, as well as beautiful art direction, graphics, and music.

When you decide to make no compromises, you can expect either a catastrophe or a miracle. Okami is the second case. This game is the phantom that scares other games with its own perfection and neatness. [Aug 2008]

The story is deslightful and has plenty of subtle humour all the way through it. [June 2008, p.70]

What makes Okami so timeless is an art style that trancends technology. It looks as new today as it did in 2006. [Apr 2008, p.40]

Still, it's one of the few games that can overcome shaky fundamentals in light of an astonishingly engaging adventure. [May 2008, p.77]

While the novel gameplay and awe-inspiring art style will be the hook for many, the tale told here is one filled with heart and humor. [May 2008, p.95]

While some minor control issues here blemish an otherwise flawless package, Okami remains one of the best games of recent years, if not of all time. It’s engaging, original, and a true work of art — Wii owners looking for a game worthy of their time need look no further.

The Wii controls aren’t perfect for celestial paintbrush techniques, but they certainly don’t detract from the overall experience. With widescreen support, and improved visual fidelity, you’ll find very little to complain about.

And in the End... It's the rare game that can be ported to a new system two years after its original release, nearly pixel for pixel, and yet still feel like a fresh new experience, but "Okami" is just such a game, thanks to an excellent implementation of the Wii controller on an already engaging game.

Okami is a beautifully presented, supremely playable, wonderfully original game that's well worth purchasing.

Some attack controls aren't smoothly read, but otherwise, this is a masterpiece you'll want to add to your personal collection.

At a length of around 30 hours the game has more punch then the average adventure game of its kind, and while it feels a little long and can be frustrating at parts, I definitely place Okami near the top of the Wii releases, and possibly on the top of all adventure releases.

The journey to restore the world’s vitality is long and enjoyable, filled with memorable characters and scenes.

While a few minor things may have been lost in the port, I’d argue that ultimately this is a more important game for the Wii than it was for the PS2.

Age isn't kind to many games, but with the addition of motion controls for the celestial brush and support for widescreen and progressive scan displays, Okami has been updated enough to make it even more relevant today than it was in 2006.

A must-have title for anyone who has ever loved a Zelda game, a Clover Studio game, or any time-intensive 3D adventure game. The only people I would advise against buying Okami are those on the extreme left or extreme right of the "casual/hardcore" gamer divide.

Clover and Ready at Dawn have given the Wii a beautiful and epic journey. One of the best games on the system that any gamer with a Wii needs to own. Okami is a masterpiece that is not likely to be duplicated and deserves to be in everyone's gaming library.

Without a doubt one of the best games available for the Wii. If you haven't had the chance to play the game on the PlayStation 2, then now is your chance. It's more than worthy of your money, thanks to the unique style and great gameplay.

An excellent action adventure. It's suprisingly difficult to draw a straight line with wiimote, though. [June 2008]
AtomicGamer
This is still an excellent title, but to me it just doesn't hold up on the Wii quite like I expected it to.

The final verdict is that Okami for the Wii is an excellent offering and a fine addition to your library if you don't already own the PlayStation 2 version. The small complaints are a small price to pay for such an exquisite adventure, a title that really proves that quality third-party support for Nintendo is much more than a dream at this point.

While it isn't necessary a quantum leap over the PS2 version -- and while the game has its faults -- this is still a solid title that hardcore Wii owners will want to consider adding to their library.

When all is said and done, Okami is a game that shows it's possible for a third-party title to be successful on the Nintendo hardware.

Ready at Dawn did a good job in creating a motion sensor game that focuses on art and the beauty of it. The story itself isn’t extremely original and that leads to the game feeling kind of bland.

It seemed like a perfect match for Wii, but Okami falls agonisingly short of brilliance. Still great fun to play, though. [Issue#23, p.60]
GameSpy
This is a marvelous game in terms of artistry, sound, and yes, even gameplay, despite being hamstrung by the poorly implemented Celestial Brush controls. Despite the headaches you'll undoubtedly experience, it's still worth playing Okami on your Nintendo Wii.

Unfortunately, we just can’t recommend the Wii version as the best playing Okami even though it's "newer."

Aside from the game-ruining Celestial Brush control and intro, Okami is really something special.
Read Full Review >Cheat Code Central
I recommend those who've played the game before to just stick to the PS2 version and enjoy it as it was originally made. The Wii version doesn't have anything new to offer, and the control issues detract from a perfect experience.

Okami is a work of genius, but you should play the original game instead of the Wii version if you can. [May 2008, p.88]

Bah, I wanted to like this game so much. I played for 4 hours, the quit after the game made me break my wii mote all over the damn place. The painting scenes require way too much precision. I got to a part that makes you sit through a minute long cut scene, (why you can skip through all other cut scenes but not this one is beyond me) and then makes you draw little circles over fruit for about a minute. sounds easy right. HA. goddamned pos likes to accept half ass circles, and then completely ignore perfect circles, making you start over again. After my 5th retry I snapped. goodbye wii mote. Goodbye Crap game. Oh yeah, the fighting sucked too.
Ken S gave it a5:
Played for 15 hours, got bored after 3. Ultra repetitive, super easy. Why is this a 30 hours game?
John F gave it a10:
Ok, I thought this game was awesome! I never even heard of the game at first and then one day one of my friends happens to rent it on PS2. I go over and try it out for a little, and the controls and how the game was setup seemed very good. Although the game went on for a long time, it had more thrills later on when you got in it. When it came out on Wii I bought it and yes at first I totally had no sweet clue what to do and my artistic skills were poorly bad and we all no everyone isn't that good at drawing but some people are. I managed to get used to it and I managed to beat the game easily and got every single thing including the 100 stray beads. Anyways let's get to the point, the people who have rankings for this game of like 1 or 2 maybe even 3 or 4, well sheesh, this game isn't some sort of like fighting beserk, raging mode game where you swing the controller to your lifes content. Anyways, this deserves a ten and from what I hear from other sites of them making a sequel that doesn't have Amaterasu or "Shiranui," and it's only for the Nintendo DS. I hope they manage to do a sequel for the Wii because they won't do it for the PS2 because it's too old of a system now. I just hope since it came in Japan that they might be able to make a sequel with Amaterasu.
Jordan G gave it a10:
Absolutely amazing game. An inspiring art style, epic storyline and great gameplay. Only problem I have with it are the badly translated combat controls on the Wii. The paintbrush works great but the combat controls can be an issue, but leave no negative impact on the overall play of the game. It's too good
Skye B gave it a10:
This game is the true Zelda killer! The storyline with the mix of Japan's old folklores is the best, the graphics on this game is very phenomenal because of the use of traitional artworks from ancient Japan, and the soundtrack has a very good theme that matches game perfectly. Furthermore, Capcom did the best job ever since "Mega Man 2". Nintendo should just retire the "Zelda" series immediately because of the last 5 failed me miserable and "spirit Tracks" gonna flunked big time and the new "Zelda" game for Wii is first-class butt-ugly fake that Nintendo cooks-up ever since.
John C gave it a10:
Amazing game, with great graphics. Japanese quirky humor and all around fun. A must buy.
John B gave it a10:
Okami is a great game by it's own right, but not as immersive as the greatest true Zelda games. Nearly every aspect of this game has polished near perfection. Somehow, i still felt that the game was lacking "something". Sidequests were pretty annoying and not fun, and Amaterasu's "funny" sidekick Issun was a total jerk. Some of the boss fights were truly awesome, but the final boss, oversized superball, was a major dissapointment. I'm still inclined to give this game a 10, since it does so many things right, and looks and sounds beautiful.
