Summary
One of the biggest names in boxing returns after a 15-year hiatus. Grab a Wii Remote controller in one hand and a Nunchuk controller in the other and step back into the ring with a modern update of the classic Punch-Out!! Little Mac is back! Everyone’s favorite underdog from the 1980s joins the best of the original Punch-Out!! cast in a modern re-imagination of the series. Players will find familiar names like Glass Joe, King Hippo and trainer Doc Louis. These boxers come to life again in cel-shaded 3-D, complete with hilarious fighting animations and back stories that capture all the fun and flair of the original Punch-Out!! games. The motion-sensitive controls of the Wii console mean that when players throw punches, Little Mac throws punches as well. Additionally, you can control hooks and jabs by combining motion control with control-stick movement. The motion-sensing Wii Remote and Nunchuk controllers turn real-life swings into on-screen punches, so anyone can play. The game can also be played with classic NES-style controls by turning the Wii Remote sideways. Characters: Little Mac, Glass Joe, King Hippo, Doc Louis, Von Kaiser and other unannounced favorites. Special powers/weapons/moves/features: Players can obtain special "Star Punches," which allow Little Mac to take more Health from his rival in a single punch. Motion Control (Wii Remote and Nunchuk controllers) Punch-Out!! uses the Wii Remote and Nunchuk controllers to simulate throwing punches. Use the Nunchuk to throw a left punch and the Wii Remote to throw a right punch. Classic Control (Wii Remote NES style) Fans of the NES version and core gamers will be excited to see Nintendo has also included the option to play Punch-Out!! using the classic layout from the original NES controller. Use the 1 and 2 buttons along with the cross pad to throw hooks and jabs or to dodge. [Nintendo]

While Punch Out!! makes for an entertaining enough solitary experience, the back-seat driving aspect makes it positively shine as a party game. There's nothing quite like having a few friends over, passing the controller around, shouting advice, and just generally bonding over some hilarious, bloodless violence.

Not to harp on this point too much, but save for the inclusion of Mike Tyson, I'm not sure you could expect much better from a Punch-Out!! remake.

Punch-Out!! is a fantastic game on almost every level. It's entertaining for those who have thoroughly enjoyed the previous two games, and still accessible to people who are brand new to the series. The game is a one-of-a-kind boxing experience that transcends the boundary of sports games. The controls are great, the humor is there in spades, and the gameplay is almost unparalleled.

Next Level has taken one of my favorite NES titles and turned it up a notch, making it feel right at home on the current-gen hardware but still managing to capture everything that worked so well in the original. Wii owners owe it to themselves to pick this one up; it's not one to be missed.

If you're a fan of the original Punch-Out!!! you probably already have this game. If you're a causal gamer and want a more fully featured Wii Sports boxing-type game, give this a shot. If you're hardcore and starved for a true challenge, give this a shot. And last but not least, if you're as nonplussed with the Wii as I have been recently, give this a shot.

From the music to the controls and Doc’s worthless advice between rounds, everything in Punch Out!! hearkens back to a time before bump-mapping and load screens, a time when games didn’t have to rely on downloadable content or pre-order bonuses to be great.

While I’m still a bit bitter that it’s taken 15 years for Nintendo to deliver a new Punch-Out!!, it was unquestionably worth the wait. As a Punch-Out!! fan, I couldn’t ask for more -- classic gameplay that feels familiar, with a handful of fresh and unexpected challenges that are as entertaining as they are challenging.

Just for you, Metacritic! Punch-Out!! expertly walks the line between casual punchy-punchy and “serious gamer” depth. As with all the best fighting games, it’s not about seeing the end, it’s about how you get there.

Punch-Out!! is destined to become one of this generation's top classics, right up there with Super Mario Galaxy. It's one heckuva peace offering for Nintendo's jilted lifers, an elaborate brainteaser for everyone who picks it up, and absolutely the best Punch-Out!! to date. If you're still fishing for a reason to own a Wii, this is it.

It's quite incredible when we find out that an original classic is not only remade with an impressive taste, but also that it's one of the best games on the Wii console so far. There's a mixture between graphics, gameplay and funny situations that makes the game almost impossible for anyone to stop playing it. It's a must-have if you like sports, and if you don't, you still have plenty of things to find with this one.

As much as I was pummelled by the higher echelon of boxers, it was (and continues to be) fun. It’s also open enough to be kid-friendly and punishing enough to offer the kind of experience many of us from the NES era remember so fondly.

Luckily the second half of the game brings back that sense of discovery with character upgrades that change things considerably. Punch Out works due to the tight mix of concise, simple gameplay that has not grown stale despite being over two decades old, a superb slapstick sense of humour, a style that matches it perfectly and because it caters to everybody without being detrimental to anybody on the control front.

If you're not a fan Punch-Out!! is still worth trying, but with caution. It's approachable at first but a hard taskmaster later on, an endurance test for your nerves and temper. Nintendo played it safe this time, and it’s hard to blame them, but it still is somewhat disappointing that they didn’t go the extra mile and expand the game’s content. Nevertheless, Nintendo seems to have given fans exactly what they wanted, no more, no less.

Taking the simple and aged concept of Punch Out and updating it for a modern day console is no obvious feat, but Next Level Games has definitely pulled it off with grandeur. The boxing is fun, the roster of fighters is both charming and well assembled and the different modes offered does give this title some bang for it's buck. Although there are some flaws to be found they are nowhere near enough to deter gamers from punching their way through what's definitely one of the most entertaining experiences you'll find on the Wii.

Brock J. gave it a9:
It's as good as a Punch-Out! game can be without Mike Tyson. They do make them like they used to. The motion controls are perfect, and it's also great with the balance board and the classic NES controls! Anyone who wants to play a great Wii game should pick this up, anyone who is a fan of the series MUST pick this up!
Jorad T gave it a10:
This is easily the best Wii game this year so (even exceeding Little King's Story) however there could be a couple of minor improvements. As far as graphics go they are stunning, cell shaded and beautiful. The animations are wacky yet smooth and the characters are full of personality. The soundtrack is awsome and I especially like Disco Kid's and King Hippo's themes. I also liked how each character spoke in their native tongue (though subtitles would've been appreciated). The gameplay is fantastic. It isn't a boxing game as such but more arcade with a hint of strategy. You have to learn each characters techniques and using dodges and blocks find a way to counter and win. It all works flawlessly and as you get better you find newer, faster ways to beat down your opponents. The multiplayer mode, whilst still pretty fun, is no where near as fun and addictive as the single player mode and some Wifi would've been nice. But beggars can't be choosers and it's still a fantastic experience. As far as difficulty and length goes, at first it seems easy. Beating the first 13 opponents all in all won't take too long. However after that you have to face them all AGAIN and they are all much harder. However even here overall the story mode will last around 7 or 8 hours. But there is the hardest part of all. The Exibition mode. This allows you to fight off against the characters you have fought in the Career mode however you have three challenges to complete, each requiring you to learn the moves of the opponent back to front before you can beat them. Overall the game is awesome. It offers a great challenge and will last for ages due to it's massive replay value. Both newcomers and nostalgic Punch Out fans will adore it!!
Dan L gave it a9:
Instantly nostalgic. Punchout!! is more about strategy and problem solving than it appears to be on the surface. The developers relate the game to a puzzler more than a fighter and I wholeheartedly agree. Punchout!! does little different from the original, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. I think older gamers, like myself, forget just how old the original Punchout is. There is an entire generation of gamers who have never seen an NES in person, let alone played one. For them, this game is an exciting new experience. It may not be a new experience for gamers like me, but it's still every bit as exciting. Punchout will frustrate you to no end at points, but that is part of the beauty. Discovering the trick to a one shot knock down or the pattern to avoiding a boxer's attacks provides an overwhelming sense of accomplishment that very few games can emulate these days. All in all, Punchout does enough to make it worth playing over the SNES version, but it sticks close enough to the roots to avoid ruining what made the originals so great.
Caleb h gave it a10:
This game is amazing. I can't believe how great of a job the developers did in bringing the old game into a new, exciting experience. I really enjoy playing the game - as well as soaking in the nostalgia from my childhood. It's perfect.
Shawn D gave it a10:
This game brings me back to those carefree days when I had to leave the NES on all night to "save" my progress right before Mr. Sandman. I'm so glad they didn't try to add too many frills to the controls. I'm very impressed that the boxers speak their native language, too!
john v gave it a10:
Its a great game with pretty good motion control, a lot of difficulty, pretty good multiplayer and enough stuff in the game to play for hours and hours. also it brings back good memories.
Hans H gave it a10:
This is how you revive a classic franchise. Brilliant visuals, insanely (yet fun) difficulty , and tons of character make this a must-own. Little Mac is back with a vengeance and Wii, my old friend, you have truly arrived tanks to this modern day classic.
