Even though the game feels dated (and looks it too), Rygar: The Battle of Argus is extremely fun. Being a virgin to the series the ease of play and amount of enjoyment truly surprised me. This is the type of game that anyone can pick up and play and have a good time.

GameFocus

The Battle of Argus feels like a bit of a missed opportunity here. While the controls work well, and the music is still amazing, nothing has been done to address concerns that popped up six years ago when the original game was released. Newcomers are definitely getting a great game that they may have missed on the PS2.

Nintendo Power

Worth at least a rental. [Holiday 2008, p.77]

N-Europe

Rygar is an admirable revamp of a once classic NES game, it is still a port of a six year old title though and it shows; however it's still worthy of attention if you missed it the first time around and are looking for a reasonably competent adventure game.

For Wii owners looking for a traditional action game in the vein of Castlevania or God of War, right now, this is still one of your best bets.

GameSpot

Rygar feels every bit as old as you'd expect from a six-year-old game, but it still has some really fun moments.

IGN

What may have been impressive in 2002 feels pretty dated today. This is an unnecessary port that doesn't add enough new content to warrant strapping your disk armor back on.

AceGamez

The Battle of Argus is reasonably entertaining in short doses, but there's nothing revolutionary or truly engaging to keep you coming back for more - it's just a competent port of an old PS2 game whose mechanics and design are really showing their age.

Whilst it's good to see a decent forgotten game given a second chance in the modern day market, it is a shame that the original flaws weren't ironed out for this revision.

The main saving grace for Rygar: The Battle of Argus is that it’s one of the easier Wii action games to play. Unfortunately, it suffers from a total lack of originality for those who are familiar with the 3D action game genre.

Game Chronicles

It’s playable and even fun; more so when you don’t have any way to compare it to the original. Even so, there are better Wii games out there so use some discretion with this one.

Game Informer

You might have some fond memories of this series, but I suggest you avoid eye contact with this game the next time you're at the store. [Feb 2009, p.86]

NGamer UK

Hardly epic and in no way legendary, but this contains mild thrills - if you can come to terms with how outdated it all is. [Aug 2009, p.71]

Official Nintendo Magazine UK

Rygar may have been decent six years ago, but with no updates it's now dated and shoddy. [July 2009, p.86]

Teletext GameCentral

Low budget, low effort port of what is otherwise one of the PS2's more unfairly forgotten action games.

Newcomers may enjoy this remake, but everyone else should stick with the superior (and inexpensive) PS2 version.

Enemies almost always react faster than your character, he turns as if he’s in a particularly unwieldy chariot. Jumping is a chore, thanks to the awkward mapping of the function to the nunchuk’s Z button.

GameTrailers

Rygar: The Battle of Argus is sub-standard in every area, and while it has its moments, most are filled with boredom or outright frustration. The PS2 version is readily available for a few dollars, and the meager additions to this Wii iteration provide little incentive to pick it up.

Gamervision

With its baffling design choices and shoddy controls, Rygar: The Battle of Argus fails to deliver as much fun and satisfaction as the original game.

Everyeye.it

Rygar: The Battle of Argus is totally not a good game: some of the good ideas linked to the potential of WiiMote are ruined by an old game structure that frustrates the player a lot during the game and there's no point in graphics that are under the today's Wii average.

Rygar: The Battle of Argus should have been a challenging and thrilling Wii experience, if only more care and attention was put into the final package.

Even if you remember the PS2 game with fondness, don't buy this one; your rose-tinted glasses will smash and you'll be left picking the splinters from your eyeballs as tears of blood roll down your cheeks. Also it's not worth £29.99.

t is not just bad, it is bad in an incredibly Wii-specific, low-effort sort of way you just don’t see on other consoles.
