The Sam & Max episodes let players guide the Freelance Police through a series of bizarre—and often sidesplitting—mysteries. Sam is a six-foot dog in a baggy suit sporting a trombone-sized .44 hand-cannon. Max is a three foot "rabbity thing" with a saw blade grin and the impulsive nature of the average piranha. Together they patrol the sticky streets of a fantastical New York City, righting wrongs, pummeling perps, and ridding the urban landscape of the shifty legions of "self-propelled gutter trash" that litter their streets. Sam & Max have appeared in comics, video games, an animated TV series coming soon to DVD, and an Eisner award-winning webcomic. [TellTale Games]

Armchair Empire
For both the young (who were either too youthful or not even born to have been around for the point & click adventure gaming rage of the early 1990s) and old (those who were lucky enough to have experienced the golden age of LucasArts point & click adventuring, including the classic Sam & Max Hit the Road), the Wii version of Sam & Max Season One is sure to bring more than a few rib-tickling chuckles and guffaws along with the superbly written story for a hilarious gaming journey.

Sam & Max: Season One may just be the best. It's a smooth, smart point-and-click, simple when appropriate, perplexing when needed, and quite possibly the funniest game you'll ever play.

Pelit (Finland)
The kings of the silly and witty make their way to the consoles. Sam&Max is still one of the funniest games on the shelves. The Wii version suffers a little inaccuracy of the mote control but fortunately it doesn't spoil the fun. If you crave for an adventure and haven't tried this out, now is the time. [Feb 2009]

Worth Playing
The soundscape may be imperfect, but the sheer sense of writing quality makes up the difference.

Sam & Max makes almost everything right. Also the characters and the story are funny as hell.

The adventures of Sam & Max are without a doubt the best point and click adventures ever. Despite the fact that the game doesn't even come close to the PC-version, we still recommend every gamer that has never played a Sam & Max before should start playing it. If you already played the game on your PC than there is nothing new for you to explore. But cheer up, season three is nearly coming!

The conversion could have been better, but we've been dying to see this on Wii for ages and it's still bags of fun to play. [Issue#26, p.76]

While graphically inferior and less wieldy than its PC counterpart, Sam & Max: Season One on the Wii still captures the wit and humor of the franchise very well. An enjoyable and refreshing game in a sea of Wii mediocrity.

At the end of the day, Sam & Max Season One is an excellent game with enough punch to overcome its deficiencies.

The point-and-click genre isn’t for everyone, and a port of an episodic PC sequel to a 1993 computer game may not be as exciting for most gamers as it was for me. However, if you’ve ever been a fan of Sam & Max, or point-and-click games in general, then you should play this game.

Each episode presents its own challenges, humour and fun -- and for the Sam & Max fan, it will be worth picking up and playing through. For those not familiar with the Sam & Max franchise, the game is probably of most interest to adventure game and puzzle game fans.

When the laughter dies and some of the jokes fall flat, however, Sam & Max teeters as its gameplay is unable to support much interest for some stretches. [Sept 2008, p.105]

There are moments of genuine hilarity, but the humor too often feels overwrought or simply falls flat. [Oct 2008, p.89]

Five months later, the port of the first six adventures of Sam & Max comes to Wii. Managed by the Wiimote pointer and without any visual improvement worth mentioning, it is still a good opportunity for those who was not able to play them already, as the port retaini the same comedy value and high quality.

Saying that, if you've enjoyed the characters in the past, there's more than a good chance you'll like these adventures, especially as they get better as you move along, even if the video presentation doesn't make a similar improvement.

The first six episodes may not be perfect but they certainly show glimpses of the greatness that could well be on the way as the team get to grips with their new way of producing adventures for the duo.

Point and click-adventures aren't exactly released in abundant numbers these days, but Sam & Mac: Season One is one such release that manages to breathe life into the genre and add a healthy dose of humour into the mix at the same time. The sence of humour, the voice acting and and the script are all fantastic and the only annoying factor is that the puzzles can become a bit illogical at times. This might turn some people away from the experience, but have no doubt that this is a great and fun adventure.

Sam & Max: Season One is a game that, from a technological perspective, just won’t do anymore. The game falters, wavers, stutters, and even crashes on occasions. It’s easy to overlook those shortcomings though, because some of the episodes are hands down hilarious, the puzzles are fun, and the game packs a large cast of comical characters. Nostalgia’s just around the corner, because Sam & Max remind once again us of the good old days.

Because of the clever story and interesting characters, it's worth struggling to the end through the more tedious puzzles (or cheating with an online walkthrough). But if you were hoping for a more player-friendly adventure, you might want to skip straight to Sam and Max Season 2.
