The Sam & Max episodes let players guide the Freelance Police through a series of bizarre—and often sidesplitting—mysteries. Sam is a six-foot dog in a baggy suit sporting a trombone-sized .44 hand-cannon. Max is a three foot "rabbity thing" with a saw blade grin and the impulsive nature of the average piranha. Together they patrol the sticky streets of a fantastical New York City, righting wrongs, pummeling perps, and ridding the urban landscape of the shifty legions of "self-propelled gutter trash" that litter their streets. Sam & Max have appeared in comics, video games, an animated TV series coming soon to DVD, and an Eisner award-winning webcomic. [TellTale Games]

Worth Playing
The soundscape may be imperfect, but the sheer sense of writing quality makes up the difference.

Official Nintendo Magazine UK
We loved it, but we understand a lot of people might not. A niche experience then, but a great one. [Sept 2008, p.88]

NGamer UK
Finally, point 'n' click done right. [Oct 2008, p.58]
82
Games Master UK
A nice change of pace and that rarest of things: a genuinely funny Wii game. [Oct 2008, p.74]

n-Revolution Magazine UK
The conversion could have been better, but we've been dying to see this on Wii for ages and it's still bags of fun to play. [Issue#26, p.76]

GamerNode
While graphically inferior and less wieldy than its PC counterpart, Sam & Max: Season One on the Wii still captures the wit and humor of the franchise very well. An enjoyable and refreshing game in a sea of Wii mediocrity.

Destructoid
At the end of the day, Sam & Max Season One is an excellent game with enough punch to overcome its deficiencies.

Gamervision
The point-and-click genre isn’t for everyone, and a port of an episodic PC sequel to a 1993 computer game may not be as exciting for most gamers as it was for me. However, if you’ve ever been a fan of Sam & Max, or point-and-click games in general, then you should play this game.

It’s a good package of short and amusing episodes for new players to dig into. Series vets may want to stick with the PC version.

The slow pace of these games isn't for everyone, but if you're a fan you'll probably get your fix with Sam & Max: Season One.

Game Informer
When the laughter dies and some of the jokes fall flat, however, Sam & Max teeters as its gameplay is unable to support much interest for some stretches. [Sept 2008, p.105]

Nintendo Power
There are moments of genuine hilarity, but the humor too often feels overwrought or simply falls flat. [Oct 2008, p.89]

Meristation
Five months later, the port of the first six adventures of Sam & Max comes to Wii. Managed by the Wiimote pointer and without any visual improvement worth mentioning, it is still a good opportunity for those who was not able to play them already, as the port retaini the same comedy value and high quality.

Saying that, if you've enjoyed the characters in the past, there's more than a good chance you'll like these adventures, especially as they get better as you move along, even if the video presentation doesn't make a similar improvement.

A few technical issues get in the way, but the hilarity of this adventure series still shines through.

The game's still fun and unusual, and it's worth checking out if only to enjoy some of the more clever writing in gaming. But don't forget your patience -- you'll need lots.

Sam & Max: Season One is a strikingly niche title very much in love with its PC predecessors from LucasArts and Sierra.
