Pelit (Finland)
A refreshingly different game in the Sims 2 series. There’s something addictive in collecting banana leaves, vines and such and building a whole lot of improvised tools and buildings out of them. I think the game hits it’s mark quite well. I’d say Castaway is the best Sims game for ages, if not for the clumsy, Wiimote controlled interface. Unfortunately, it just takes some enjoyment out of the game. Well, you can’t get everything. [Jan 2008]

This is a title that finally brings new life to the console versions of The Sims, and if you're a fan of either The Sims, or just being deserted on a island, this is a game you need to check out.

Armchair Empire
It’s certainly the best Sims game to wash ashore any console in awhile, and will please fans of the Sims franchise while being a alluring adventure for those Wii owners not already acclimated to the Sims PC gaming juggernaut.

In the end, Sims 2: Castaway is one of the more entertaining Sim titles to come out in a while and you'd be doing yourself a disservice by not giving it a shot. It's certainly not a stereotypical Sim title and almost anyone can pick this game up and give it a whirl.

Sure, it's not one of the three things I'd take with me to a desert island - those three spaces are reserved for a helicopter, a trained pilot and a good flask of Yorkshire Tea for the ride home - but Castaway is something that I'd look forward to playing upon my safe return from the island.

Castaway might just be one of the best iterations of The Sims 2 on consoles yet.

A beautiful example of how Maxis' long-running series can renew itself and even become appealing to console owners. There's plenty to do, a lot to discover and even when everything is done players can decide to stick around the islands and keep tinkering.

The only thing I think the developers could have improved on would have been the diversity of the animals in which you hunt. They could have also added some island natives for you to interact with.

Worth Playing
I found the gameplay in The Sims 2: Castaway to be quite entertaining and, to a point, addictive, especially after delegating a large amount of the repetitive resource gathering to island primates and other castaways.

Survive like Ray Mears while fretting over how good you look in a grass skirt. It's a whole news Sims experience. [Christmas 2007, p.50]

IGN
While it gives an interesting twist on the standard shipwreck concept, the hampered nature of the guidebooks, strange placement of plans in menus and continual micromanagement does hamper some of the fun of the title. However, Sims fans will find this to be a good break from the traditional Sims formula.

It may be an acquired taste, but if you’ve ever wanted a Sims game that really jumps ship (silly pun intended), The Sims 2 Castaway has all the island-dwelling excursions you could hope for, minus the unfriendly encounters with the Others.

The Wiire
Great game. Easily among my favorite games, but could be improved considering the true potential of the Wii. Nevertheless, The Sims 2: Castaway manages an experience that surpasses the GameCube iterations in every way.

Even though the Wii controls work extremely well, you'll spend most of the game mashing the Z button to harvest every stick, stone, and pineapple you see. [Nov 2007, p.148]

A pleasant enough diversion that’s unlikely to hold the attention for any great length of time. It’s fun enough while it lasts, though.

One game-breaking aspect of The Sims 2 Castaway is the load screens. The loading times are much too long and occurs much too often.

Concepts and premises like this whimsical survivor tale are fresh at least; now EA needs to escape from Suck Island and find fun gameplay.

M K gave it a4:
I can't believe I bought this...I think the visuals are ugly, completely last gen, the sound is okay but in no way great, and the gameplay...is mostly boring. you just gather, gather, gather...and the zones arent big enough, too many load times...another unecessary sims game on the consoles. This series has seriously gone down the tank.

Pat D. gave it an8:
Awesome game, a nice departure from the previous ones in the series. Solid control scheme, lots of fun exploring the islands and the world are simply gorgeous. The audio is fantastic. Some performance issues here and there. Really enjoyed this version!
