Summary

Based on the all-new CGI TMNT movie, Ubisoft's TMNT video game takes place in New York City, a city plagued with fast-moving shadows and attacks from strange creatures. Could the wealthy and mysterious Max Winters be involved? New York City needs the Turtles now more than ever but they face their most trying time both as heroes and as brothers. With the fate of the City and their family at stake, it's up to Leonardo with Zen Master Splinter to restore unity and ninja discipline to the Turtles. In this highly immersive experience, join the Ninja Turtles team and experience intense acrobatic navigation, collaborative combat and powerful fighting moves. Engage in over-the-top Ninja action to reunite the Turtles and save New York City. Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello and Michelangelo are playable, each with unique acrobatic moves, weapons and combat skills, such as Michelangelo’s fast nunchuk face slap and Raphael’s powerful Sai throw. Play Magazine

TMNT does only 2 things--platforming and fighting--but it does them so right that the replayability is off the charts. [Apr 2007, p.38]

75

GamePro

The cool platforming elements make this one worth at least a rental--if only so one can revisit the days when "Cowabunga" was a socially acceptable thing to say.

Game Informer

The best Turtles game in years, which admittedly is kind of like saying you just got the best punch in the gut you’ve had in years. Nonetheless, TMNT entertains pretty consistently, delivering fast-paced thrills but almost no genuine challenge.

GameSpy

If you judge TMNT on its own merits as a platform-hopper with a dash of semi-imaginative combat thrown in, then it's a fine game.

GamingExcellence

Though the running and jumping portion of the game is pretty decent, the fighting is monotonous and repetitive, and is just plain dull.

Worth Playing

While it was definitely on the right track to restoring the brand to its former video game glory, the surprisingly boring and simplistic gameplay absolutely kills it.

VideoGamer

It should provide an entertaining ninja experience for the under 10 market but in doing so can't be recommended to more experienced gamers. If you're old enough to remember the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on pre-32-Bit hardware, you'll sadly fall into the latter category.

GameSpot

TMNT has some legitimately neat platforming sequences, but it's more frustrating than a kid-oriented game ought to be, and the combat is completely brain-dead.

NGamer UK

This is by no means the car crash of a game that Ubisoft's withholding led us to expect; it's more of a severe car scrape against a bollard. [June 2007, p.42]

55

IGN

Videogames are fun because they challenge us or stimulate our minds in some way. TMNT doesn't. With no co-operative mode available, single-button combat, and straightforward level design, all you're left with are some nice animations and decent platforming that just don't carry the weight.

Official Nintendo Magazine UK

A missed opportunity. [June 2007, p.88]

Gaming Target

There are some interesting moves and the environment is well done. However, as a TMNT game it’s sorely lacking.

Nintendo Power

The real shame is that TMNT once had a legacy of good video games--recent titles such as this one have sent that history to the sewers. [May 2007, p.85]

Games Radar (in-house)

A multiplayer game that required the turtles to co-ordinate their efforts and powers could have rocked so much harder. For that matter, so could a camera that chose better angles and thus caused to fewer missed jumps due to misjudged distances.

Cheat Code Central

While I think that the Wii version of this game could have been great, the uninspiring use of the motion-sensing controls in combat detract from the game's enjoyment. I found myself wishing that I could just hit buttons to attack instead of pointlessly shaking the controllers back and forth.

WHAM! Gaming

The biggest problem with this game comes down to Ubisoft really not taking full advantage of the Wii functionality like they could have. Most attack moves come down to wildly swinging the controller, and ninja-like moves such as double-jumping and wall-running are all done using boring ol’ button and analog stick combinations. Yawn.

Sydney Morning Herald

It was radioactive ooze that spawned the Turtles, but it's your brain that will turn to ooze trying to get some decent entertainment out of this sludgy beat 'em up.

Simon G. gave it a7:
Sure the game is linear. Sure there a no fighting upgrades, really! No Multiplayer. Not much collectibles. No destructible environments. And a confusing storyline. In fact, let’s be honest this games lacks dept in every corner. However at a bargain bin price, you will be the happy owner of what’s left of the game, which is a few game mechanics that work. The platforming works just great. The basic fighting system works just fine as well. The game is short (approximately 6-7 hours the first time thru, add another 6-7 hours to unlock everything), but really fun while it lasts. Jumping, leaping and hopping in many different ways and in every direction, it’s a blast. Sure it takes some time to get use to it, but once you do, you’ll constantly be looking for better ways to overcomes obstacles. For 20$ or a week-end rental, this a good pick (who said we didn’t need games to rent?).

Jason M. gave it an8:
Good game. Personally, I give it an 8 overall because I really like the interface. Games like this and Ice Age 2 really appeal to me due to the way the controls work. Control movement with the analog stick, attack by moving the wiimote, lots of button use, etc.

Alexander N. gave it a5:
I like the GameSpot review. It sums it up nicely. There are some cool aspects to the game. Like the story and the ninja-like gameplay. but there are too many flaws to really enjoy the game as much as you could. The levels seem to be too long (took me 30 minutes to beat one of the levels) and the combat does suck ass.

Jig E. gave it a7:
Two words, SINGLE PLAYER! Ninja Turtles has always been multiplayer so I was hugely disappointed that this one isn't. What is with the Wii not having any multiplayer games aside from the cheesy party ones?

Dana O. gave it an8:
Not a bad game. The controls work well, and I'm satisfied with my purchase. If you have more than one system, you might want to check reviews between the Wii version and this one. The one thing that makes the Wii version stand out is the mini-games.
