Summary

For the first time, players will have the freedom to define their character, story and style based on the choices they make, the paths they choose and the style of skating they use on the proving grounds from Philadelphia and Baltimore to Washington, D.C. Tony Hawk's Proving Ground features deeper customization than ever before, including a Video Editor with full-featured editing tools and visual effects for creating "epic skate videos," and a fully customizable online Skate Lounge where players can skate with friends in the ultimate pad. In addition, players have the freedom to skate from single player to online seamlessly, as well as utilize new gameplay mechanics such as skateable terrain altering and building, and Bowl Carving. Tony Hawk’s Proving Ground also features even more Nail the Trick moves such as Nail the Grab and Nail the Manual intensifying the thrill of pulling off big tricks. [Activision]

PGNx Media

Tony Hawk’s Proving Ground does a great job of bringing the Proving Ground experience to the Wii and PS2. The game is a port of the next-generation versions and includes many of the same environments, goals, characters, etc.

Game Chronicles

The Wii version is very good with a few problems with the controls but the graphics and other portions of the game are really very good.

Cheat Code Central

Tony Hawk's Proving Ground for the Wii is a good game with classic gameplay and creative controls. The graphics fall short and there is no online component, but it is a very entertaining title on the whole.

Only the most hardcore fans are going to persevere with it, and even then it just doesn't work properly. [Jan 2008, p.52]

GameSpot

This version of Proving Ground makes it pretty clear that the priority for the Tony Hawk series is not on this platform.

There really is no excuse for such a poor Wii version. Sort it out Activision. [Jan 2008, p.87]

IGN

Extremely shoddy controls mean that you'll likely be throwing your Wii Remote and Nunchuck around the room and ejecting the disc before you even come close to getting your money's worth.

Jake M. gave it a4:
Both of my predecessors are being far too kind. The game is fun, could have been great, however, controls are complete crap. Seriously, at first I thought it was a learning curve type of thing, and then realized that they are just horrible. On top of button layout being horrible, you can't change it to remap controls, so yea, losing effort. I'm selling mine right away so I'll at least get something for it.

Total J. gave it an8:
I love skateboarding, and every Tony Hawk game. So they'd have to really mess up for me to dislike the game. That said, the Wii controls are fun to use and don't feel awkward at all. After a couple days playing, it feels completely normal, natural, even better at times, than the traditional controller. This version to Tony Hawk seems more difficult than the others, however. This is not a bad thing. It means more replay value. Since Project 8 didn't come out for the Wii, this is the premier skateboarding game right nowfor the Wii. It's not groundbreaking, but very solid. Tony Hawk fans and skate fans like me will have lots of fun with the game. Even though it would have been way better with online features!

Ron R. gave it a9:
With VERY low expectations from this game, once the controls were learned, yeah it takes some time to learn, but the fun factor takes you back to the days of THPS2! You will have fun, so deal with it!
