You’d be extremely hard-pressed to find a more complete tennis package on Wii – Virtua Tennis 2009’s offline and online career modes offer the most engaging representations of the sport on any console.

What Virtua Tennis lacks in panache or style, it makes up for with substance, including a comprehensive World Tour mode and the best tennis controls on Wii. [July 2009, p.62]

A quite good tennis game. The MotionPlus-support makes all the difference. Without it the game feels clumsy ja awkward. What's with the constant and annoying MotionPlus-activation, though? [July 2009]
Cheat Code Central
It’s a solid step up from what’s been on the Wii so far, and it’s addictive enough that we kept playing well past the point where our arms got sore.

The best version released this year. Wii MotionPlus turns this game from average to excellent.

Virtual Tennis 2009 is definitely a more detailed experience than what we’ve seen in Wii Sports.

A beast of a tennis game, with MotionPlus support and more options than you'll ever use. [Aug 2009, p.79]
Zentendo
Virtua Tennis is easily one of the better tennis games on the Wii right now.

A really good tennis game, primarily due to its variety of satisfying game modes. Unfortunately, the game is weighed down by several glaring flaws.

It's not the prettiest looking game, and it does have some minor issues, but the motion controls make all the difference, they do take a bit of getting used to, but once you get the hang of them it really makes it feel authentic.

As a first attempt at Wii MotionPlus controls this is a decent effort, but it's not quite the definitive article. [July 2009, p.88]

If you’re looking for the definitive version of Virtua Tennis 2009, look no further. The Wii affords players the best tennis action around, despite lacking game design and aesthetics.

Without any doubt, the Wii version of Virtua Tennis 2009 bests its Xbox 360/PS3 counterparts The lacking visuals and sound may be a disappointment, but the awesome online and intuitive controls make this well worth it for any fan of the sport.

The controls of this game are working well, although at first you have to practice a little. Wii MotionPlus is supported but the difference isn't groundbreaking. Fortunately Virtua Tennis 2009 from itself is already a strong game.

In conclusion, Virtua Tennis 2009 shows up as what it is, without experiments in its gameplay. It just modifies the control to adapt itself to Nintendo's machine, and makes use of the Wii MotionPlus to optimize its control.

Virtua Tennis 2009 is an excellent tennis game that offers the same modes and gameplay as the other versions, but the implementation of Wii Motion Plus could be much better.

Despite the fact that all the evidence suggests Virtua Tennis is a series stuck in a rut, Virtua Tennis 2009 is still great fun and this Wii version feels different enough that it'll be worth a shot for many.

Good fun; you just have to do some work to get the most enjoyment out of it. [Aug 2009, p.89]

Grand Slam Tennis was a false start after all, as Sega demonstrates the full potential of Wii MotionPlus.

If you're a Wii-only player without other options, Virtua Tennis 2009 is worth a few swings; otherwise, you might want to rent it and leave it at that.

It is very fun to go wild with the Wiimote in Virtua Tennis 2009, but there is a lot of room for improvement. The career mode is very boring and the Wii Motion Plus need some fine tuning. The minigames are however very funny and it is entertaining to play with some friends.

The most realistic tennis game on Wii, the title's depth will be challenging to some but a joy for others.

Virtua Tennis's motion control satisfies with a trademark pick-up-and-play experience that nevertheless mirrors the sport to an authentic degree. [Sept 2009, p.127]
Game Informer
The Top Spin series, despite its gameplay issues, at least made an effort. Virtua Tennis needs to try much harder if it’s going to regain its title as the preeminent tennis franchise.

Virtua Tennis 2009 is a solid, enjoyable game however lacks the finesse of other Wii tennis titles in the market.

As a first attempt at Wii MotionPlus controls this is a good effort, but it's not the definitive one.

Virtua Tennis 2009, as an arcade, is worse than Wii Sports Tennis; as a simulation, is worse than Grand Slam Tennis. Game mechanics were thought to work with a traditional pad, and they were just adapted later to Wiimote and MotionPlus; compared to Grand Slam Tennis, it seems from another era.

The fact that this is one of the first titles to use MotionPlus shows badly. At times it feels at best poorly implemented and at other points it just feels like it has been tacked on as an afterthought.

VT2009 for Wii makes a new experience in the genre thanks to the Wiimotion Plus add-on. Become one of the best 25 world tennis players with tons of jaggies and poor court details, but with different gameplay choices combining the Wiimote with or without Nunchuck and Wiimotion Plus for all kinds of gamers.

Thanks to MotionPlus, Virtua Tennis 2009 is a good game, with its limits. Lack of innovation starts to be a problem as happened with the other versions but the good number of choices and a good multiplayer could be interesting for someone still loving this sport.

It's a pretty lackluster effort overall, and not at all what I was anticipating. I'll stick to my fonder memories of the original, and hope that at some point Virtua Tennis can bring back some of that excitement and fun that I had with the series when it began.

Steve H gave it a2:
This is a ridiculously easy game. It is impossible to hit the ball out wide and opponents are awful. So far I have won every tournament entered. It's a shame because the idea is great but it's much much much too easy.
Ben D gave it a7:
I love the way the game plays & how each of the professional's personal body motions have been incorporated. What I'm finding annoying is the on-line play. I've only had a couple of games but I'm guessing the ping times are too high between players so there's lag. It means for many missed shots you easily could have returned. Surely just putting a caveat in that it won't connect betweem users if the ping times are greater than (whatever doesn't work) should be included. On another point it's far to easy to beat the AI players - should be a lot more challenging.
Max C gave it an8:
This game looks awesome but i hear alot of good reviews aswell as bad ones but one thing that bugs me is J S made me think that in 2 player its NOT even split screen and also ive seeen the gameplay and the scoreboard thing J S was talking about would start to annoy me too, for me its a toss up between this and grand slam , but my brother hates games with bad graphics soo even though grandslam might have better gameplay the graphics are too cartoony for me i just hope wii motion + will actually work and make it a more realistic fun game :)
Laurent gave it a3:
I like tennis games and was thrilled to see this one on the wii. It's a disappointment. As somebody said it takes skill to get it to work with you but to me the skills it takes are the wrong ones. 1. The way you choose the direction is really odd sometimes you have to swing a whole second before you would based on the ball position 2. The control is overall unreliable -or I didn't find a reliable way that is natural enough to me
Jorge P gave it an8:
It's funny to play and controls are good.
Gareth M gave it a10:
Best tennis game on the Wii! It's great without the motion plus and the motion plus just makes it all the more fun.
J S gave it a4:
I bought this game based on good reviews but was very disappointed. I play the Wii games with my 5 year old son and although a good video game this is not a good "Wii" game. For multiplayer there is no split screen so you are essentilaly playing backward if you are in the far court (I would think for the Wii this would be a no brainer) (and half the time your player is obstructed by the scoreboard that overlies the back upper area of the screen which I found extremely annoying. The online multiplayer was not of much use as I could not find someone to play with (this may change as more people buy the game). The game also does not take advantage of the motionplus (main reason i had bought the game) (Compare with Tiger Woods 10 and Grand Slam Tennis (which I bought after this). Overall for a single player it is OK but for multiplayer look elsewhere.
