Summary

(Currently available in the UK/EU only) Pit your wits against chess experts from around the continent and prove yourself a master strategist in Wii Chess. Featuring state of the art artificial intelligence and the option of going head to head in two-player mode (with a friend at home or online via Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection), Wii Chess will test your knowledge of the game to the limits and bring the intensity of international competition into your living room. When you take your seat at the virtual table you will be able to control the movement of your pieces by simply holding the Wii Remote vertically and using the +Control Pad and A and B Buttons. Extensive options let you customise the look of the pieces and board you are playing with, while beginners can choose to get a helping hand in the form of on-screen prompts that remind them where each piece can move. You can even record and replay your games to see where you went wrong or enjoy your victory all over again. Perhaps your stiffest challenge will come when facing the game itself. Boasting one of the best chess-dedicated artificial intelligence systems available, Wii Chess will have even the most experienced players racking their brains to avoid being backed into a corner. But don’t worry; you can ease yourself in by setting the difficulty to an appropriate level before working your way up to the ultimate test. Can you take on the best and capture their kings or will you find yourself facing checkmate in the blink of an eye? [Nintendo UK]

Official Nintendo Magazine UK

It does exactly what it says on the tin. Even so, we can't help but think it'd be more fun, and cheaper, to get a real ches board out. [Mar 2008, p.78]

Eurogamer

I like chess, Wii Chess has lots of sensible options, and the online play works, but it's missing a few things that would make it better, like voice comms, correspondence options and of course motion sensor controls for dangling a piece over a square and then putting it back down again.

VideoGamer

Because Nintendo has completely ignored the Wii's unique control system, Wii Chess does nothing to break out from the shackles of its sport - and won't be of interest to anyone who isn't a chess enthusiast already.

n-Revolution Magazine UK

Remarkably conservative and unambitious for a game appearing on Nintendo's hardware. [Issue#22, p.82]

60

Maxi Consolas (Portugal)

If you like pure chess you will, obviously, like Wii Chess. It’s simple and accessible, but doesn’t take any advantage from the motion sensor. It’s worth mainly for the AI and online mode. [Feb 2008]

NGamer UK

This must be what happens when Nintendo gets writer's block. As a WiiWare title, this would be decent. As a boxed game, it's two fingers to every environmentalist on the planet. [Mar 2008, p.53]

PTGamers

Wii Chess is a poor game, and a tremendously lazy depiction – yet somewhat faithful – of this sport. You’ll be better off with a real chess set and a few friends at home.

Although it's one of the few games you can play online, that doesn't make it worth playing.

Boy Racer gave it a5:
Well, it's chess and nothing more. If you need to play chess either against and ai opponent or online on your wii then this game gives you what you want. There are no real extras of any sort, presentation is bland, and everything smacks of minimal effort being made just to cash in on the Touch Generations label, which previously has had some interesting titles. This really should have been a free channel or an inexpensive WiiWare title. Quite why they decided to release it on a disc is beyond me. Anyway, it's a basic chess game , and that's all there is to say about it.
