In Worms: A Space Oddity, players enjoy the ultimate blend of classic Worms game modes and re-invented single-player missions, as well as multiplayer modes that include a host of all-new party games and even more customization options. The game takes advantage of the Wii’s intuitive controls, on-screen hints and the redesigned interface with an in-game help system. Worms: A Space Oddity demonstrates significant visual, technical and design advancement over its predecessors with a new visual style that abandons the traditional drawn approach and replaces it with a distinctive style inspired by classic Sci-Fi looks. The Worms battles take place across six planets, each with its own, unique environments and global events. The online multiplayer experience pits up to four Worms fiends from all over the world against each other. [THQ]

The space theme could've been carried further, and the weapons need way more originality, but that doesn't stop A Space Oddity from being one of the most refreshing Worms in quite some time.

Game Chronicles
A Space Oddity continues the great gameplay and adds in some new modes like the story as well as the customizable mode where you can create your own landscape to conduct your Worm Warfare.

A decent and enjoyable, if quite silly, game.

No online multiplayer! Not like we generally expect that from Wii games, but we should be able to by now.

Official Nintendo Magazine UK
This is, in most areas, a brilliant Worms game with great gameplay mechanics, new weapons and nice visuals. But without online it's simply inferior to its DS counterparts. [Apr 2008, p.86]

Continues crawling forward in the same vein as its predecessors, and it does very well for itself in the Wii.

The weapon control is fresh and fun, there’s still a huge list of options, and the CG and voice work inclusion certainly helps. If you were hoping for a robust online experience, however, that will have to wait for A Space Oddity 2, which we’re sure will be coming sometime down the line.

While it may not offer series vets much in the way of innovation, Wii owners hankering for a new game could do worse.

Worth Playing
Perhaps the most damning criticism of Worms: A Space Oddity is that, aside from the motion controls, it's the exact same thing that you've already played a hundred times before.

The worms have set their sights on the Wii, and although it's limited in terms of weaponry, A Space Oddity is still a lot of fun.

Cheat Code Central
The game gets the controls right, and it's to be commended for that; too many times a game is ruined by tacked-on Wii controls, but such is not the case with A Space Oddity.

Beware, waggle controls go from amusing (hammering with the dropship) to pesky (the shoulder-dislocating astro punch).

Gaming Age
While Worms: A Space Oddity makes a solid first showing for the series on the Wii, it doesn't feel nearly as full fledged a Worms title as previous console versions. The lack of an online multiplayer mode definitely hurts things, and the less than stellar weapon and tool selection feels like a step backwards in the series.

Worse still is the complete lack of online play. Why are Wii gamers constantly gipped of this mode? [Issue#21, p.72]

GameZone
A decent Worms game, but nothing more. The game lacks polish in many areas and doesn’t distinguish itself from previous versions. That said, the game is still fun, especially in multiplayer.

This is not going to be everybody’s perfect Worms, but the odd controls and odder mini-games definitely set it apart from the rest of the series. As the subtitle suggests, Space Oddity is unique.

Nintendo Power
Multiplayer skirmishes still make for a good time, and I definitely support the return to 2-D, but this series just can't seem to take a real step forward without taking two steps back. [Apr 2008, p.85]

Gameplayer
Aside from a story mode and some amusing unlockable minigames the only discernable difference between Space Oddity and the Worms games of ten years ago are the Wiimote controls.

Space Oddity is worth a look for the fantastic implementation of motion controls. It is great to see they nailed the core control and gameplay mechanics but it was disappointing to see some basic things such as the visuals and worthless modes fell through the cracks.

Gaming Target
As for the gameplay itself, Worms: A Space Oddity is neither ground-breaking nor a bore. It is simply a Worms title for the Wii; fun to play, best in multiplayer and always a good laugh.

This is one Worms game that should be left to float off in space. [Apr 2008, p.76]

A distinctly average Worms game that will likely only be tolerated by exactly the opposite audience it hopes to enthral. [Apr 2008, p.114]

One of the worst Worms games in memory. [May 2008, p.62]

Jolt Online Gaming UK
The 10 year old PC game is better looking, easier to control, has more weapons and features; it doesn’t have average mini games and it has online multiplayer. What’s more, it can be had for 99 pence on eBay.

Worms: A Space Oddity is another uninspired game which brings nothing new to the series. The special Wii-controls to use weapons is funny, but also very gimmicky. Besides that the space theme brings absolutely nothing special, unless you've always wanted to blow up blue worms.

It's one thing to churn out the same game ten years after it was made. It's another to churn out an inferior version and charge people full whack for it.

Jimmy W. gave it a1:
hard to control, only 17 weapons, no rope to swing around with anymore, you can get more weapons on the xbox arcade version for about $10. I'm only giving it a 1 because a zero would mean it doesn't exist and it does and it costs $65.

Tim B gave it a2:
I'm a huge worms fan and was very disappointed with Team 17's turnout here. First and foremost, the camera controls are TERRIBLE. It's nearly impossible to consistently get the camera to pan across the screen. Those good old days of just move your mouse to change the camera view were tossed out of the window when they made this game. I have no clue how this game passed QC or any usability testing. The other huge downside is that there are so few weapons in the game, it gets boring. the whole fun of worms is wondering what's gonna pop out of that crate, a crazy old lady, a mad cow, an iron donkey?? No clue why the limited the game to about 25 weapons. Finally, the other annoyance i s that you have to play a rather boring story-mode to unlock the mini-games and other sound banks. This is just a pet peeve of mine, but if I shelled out the $50 for the game, I shouldn't have to complete boring, pointless challenges to unlock content that I paid for. One other major drawback - no online game play. Honestly, looking back on this... I have no idea why I bought this game. I'll most likely post it to ebay this weekend and see if I can get some of my $$ back. Overall, I'd say save your money and buy a different game. If you must have worms, I heard there's an XBOX live version of Worms 3d for $10 instead of the $50 they charge for this game.

Clay S gave it an8:
The game is fun. very customizable and the good humor continues. The controls take a bit to get used to, but are interesting once you get used to them. The only drawbacks are the price and the lack of online multi player.

Abo McHafil gave it a0:
SUCKS SUCKS no online, bad choice of weapons, WA had freaking 65!!! And well, even tho its 2-D it sucks a*s.
