George Clooney would crap A Perfect Storm if he had to endure the watery challenges in this stomach-churning thrill ride.

With an amazingly good-looking package and an incredibly fun game in both the single and multiplayer modes, Blood Wake is a truly excellent Xbox game.

It might be a bit simplistic and a bit short-lived, but Blood Wake features some great shooting action and solid multiplayer features.

Even in split screen with 4 players, the graphics and frame-rate are top notch and don’t seem to suffer with all the added chaos.

The more I played the more addicted I became to the gameplay. This game really feels like you are on a boat and I was amazed at the physics that the developers were able to pull off.

Quite impressive in the visuals department. Backgrounds, boats, weapons, explosions and characters are all quite detailed, and the little things like Kai turning to look back when you go in reverse are really neat.

It's fast pace and good graphics are impressive, but the game doesn't have the staying power to make it a classic.

A fun and enjoyable game that is immediately accessible. Those who like vehicle combat games will love Blood Wake, it’s everything you’d want. However the game is quite short.

A very playable vehicular combat game, and its water gimmick, along with several other elements, works to differentiate it somewhat from the rest.

Without a doubt, the best part of Blood Wake is its graphics. From coastal towns to the many scattered islands, there's always something well-rendered to look at.

There are plenty of missions to go through (and they can get VERY difficult, even on the lowest difficulty), there's tons of things to unlock, and a very nice multi-player mode to keep you playing.

The single-player mode will probably bore most people with its repetitiveness and tough gameplay. Multiplayer is excellent.

Another problem...is its incredibly jumpy sense of physics...It's far too easy for your boat to get battered around in the waves.

Blood Wake versus donuts. Point goes to donuts. Duh. [Spring 2002, p.93]

Things also tend to get a bit redundant, with the later levels feeling like larger or more populated versions of earlier missions. [Mar 2002, p.50]

Unfortunately the controls take a turn for the worse when an enemy's missile, rocket, or whatever hits you. For some reason, no matter how heavy or light your boat may be, no matter how heavily equipped it may be with weaponry and armor, your boat will unrealistically catapult into the air.

Greater variety in terms of gameplay, the freedom to configure boats with weapons of your choice, deformable terrain and an improved damage system would have seen this as one of the top games on the Xbox, but as it is, it remains one of the also-rans.

This is one of those “look at what we can do with water physics” games, and in that regard, it’s cool—but the standard mission-based gameplay isn’t nearly as deep as the ocean it takes place on.

Armandillo D. gave it a2:
S.U.C.K.S I cannot understand how this sucky game has got so high score?? This game dont have anything good in it.

Bob M. gave it a6:
Graphics are a bit better than ps2 capabilities but i dont like the story if you can even call it a story. The gameplay is good but you can only use turbo and your guns. Replay value is very low. Rent this game first.

Blue Falcon gave it an 8:
I liked this game more than I thought I would. It plays like twisted metal black, but being on water makes it feel unique.

XHead gave it a 9:
There is just something about this game that brings back memories of when the XBOX first came out and all the games had great graphics, not just a simple lackluster Playstation 2 port with last generation graphics that seems to be the norm now. I still play this game to this date, feeling like it is still brand new. The graphics killed every other game at the launch, even most out recently, yes including Halo, which I'm tired of hearing it still has the best graphics on the Box. No other game that I've played on the Box says XBOX like this one, at least to me. There has been only one other game like this before, being Cobra Triagle on the NES. There probably won't be another like it because of bad reviews when everyone was so caught up in Halo that everything else was overlooked or frowned upon. Also this game has millions of polygons running at 30 frames per second during the entire game which makes it difficult for a developer to make again since the first one was so overlooked and they won't spend all that time making another one(shame on you XBOX audience). I was hoping for a sequel but the so called professional reviewers screwed that up for everybody. I will only buy or play Xbox exclusives from now on because every time one of us buys a game that is also on the Playstation 2, we are not only having to settle for barely upgraded PS1 graphics, we are telling developers we will settle for barely passable games. Maybe I have forgotten what gaming is all about, but I haven't forgotten why I bought an XBOX in the first place. The most powerful hardware in a console bar-none, capable of blowing Gamecube and Gaystation 2 away. What every happened to the whole reason the XBOX was made for anyway? The graphics engine in the Box has been overlooked for far too long. It is time to awaken the monster and "freakin' use" the damn hardware. I might as well start backing Sony and flushing my money down the toilet if my XBOX games aren't going to look any better than Sony's garbage!

[Anonymous] gave it a 9:
Great multiplayer, cool boats, and awesome storyline make this the next best xbox game (behind halo). Only downside is single player mode has several levels that are impossible to beat without cheats even on the easiest setting.

Adam N. gave it a 10:
A Twisted Metal on water and in boats.
