Created by Texas-based Gearbox Software, Brothers in Arms is the most realistic and authentic WWII shooter ever. While other WWII games have sugarcoated the war experience, Brothers in Arms is based on a true story and will immerse gamers into the gritty, uncensored and emotionally-charged side of war. The game puts you in the shoes of Sgt. Matt Baker, a D-Day paratrooper squad leader, and asks you to lead the squad as you balance their lives with the success of the mission. The true stories and historical events you experience on your perilous journey take you through real battlefields meticulously recreated from aerial reconnaissance images, US Army Signal Corps photos and eye-witness accounts of war-torn Normandy. Players of allskill levels can battle their way through this intense experience because of Brothers in Arms innovative and accessible command and control system. [Ubisoft]

Just about every aspect of the production is top-notch, from the stunning graphics to the realistic, graphic dialogue. Although there might end up being better Xbox games this year, you won't find a better WWII shooter anywhere.

It's not just its uncompromising realism or its emotive theme, it's the whole package -- great looks, fantastic sound, and a gameplay and plot structure that promotes bonding with the men under your command. Wrap that up with a slick control method and, for once, some tactical depth, and you're left with a very special recipe.

Where "Full Spectrum Warrior" offered a fairly straightforward series of forking streets, Brothers' battlefields are big--so much so that you never feel bound by arbitrary barriers, wondering why you're funneling into forward fire when crossing the low wall on the left or the field to the right will take you well around it.

Brothers in Arms is a good start for Ubisoft WWII franchise. The drama of the story, frantic fire fights and well implemented squad command system makes other WWII shooters feel, well, just like your average shooters. Brothers in Arms is more of an authentic WWII combat experience. [May 2005, p.66]

Could have been a four-star game, were it not for a couple of things that don't work well. You can press a button to give you an overhead view during missions. But instead of helping to advance the plot, the swirling, zooming view left me dizzy. And the enemy intelligence is set pretty low, meaning they don't pursue you with much cunning.

Rick gave it a7:
Yeah I have to agree this game is over-rated. Either that or I am not playing it right. Ive made that mistake before. However I got through the first one and really wasn't raving about the accomplishment. The reviews I read talk about cinematic and having a real feel for your fellow troops. I didnt really get into the storyline too much and the gameplay consists of bogging down the enemy with suppressing fire - whilst they do that walking around the side of them and then taking them out. I wouldnt have minded that if that if it wasnt so repetitive. Chuck in some straight out bunker/corridor action where you can mow down the enemy rather than having to wait for them to pop their head up over a fence for a headshot which rarely hits the target even when you know you are spot on. I got through one or two missions on this sequel before putting the game down in boredom. Maybe I might have to re-hire and give it another go - personally I just don't believe the hype.

Peter G. gave it a9:
First of its kind, great game which offers first person shooter and bit of strategy. You are in command of either one or two squads and some levels control a tank. Great game, want a sequel.

Peter L. gave it a5:
Not as good as the critics would have you believe. In fact how could anyone give this game more than 6 is beyond me! The story is good, the detail is OK but it's hardly realistic. The gameplay is predictable and far too linear and engages for only the first few hours. Those that doubt the lack of realism might want to think about the enemy standing static in a room and not reacting to shots fired outside. The linear nature of the missions and the inability to explore reeks of porting to PS2. Full Spectrum Warrior and Fable were major disappointments on this score too and they were extremely linear too. The interludes and storytelling are very good, mind, but the ropey graphics and limited sound do not do the Xbox justice. Buy this title at your own risk.

Alex K. gave it a9:
This is a really good game. It is so intense I forgot to breathe when I was taking out a German tank.

Pete W. gave it a9:
A engrossing war game with fantastic realism and innovative gameplay. Some have accused it of being too linear and repetitive by using the suppress, flank, kill method. Isn't this what war was about? For e.g MOH:Frontline was a great game, but let's face it, in real war you couldn't run in to a room with 5 Nazi soldiers and just continually strafe while picking them off one by one and maybe only take the odd bullet yourself. Rush the enemy in BIA and you're lucky if you make it 10 feet. The enemy AI is exceptional - they're not stupid and will defend their territory resiliantly and intelligently. To advance requires careful planning, execution, and utilisation of your rescources primarily protecting your men and your health(No miracle health packs!) There are some criticisms, mainly - The occasional dubious cover saught by your soldiers contrary to your orders tellling to "move to THAT position!" - and the slightly average last level, which admittedly is reputedly historically correct but still a bit of an anti-climax. If you're looking for a bit more flow then try Call of Duty. If you want a bit more realism the check it out. (Those who doubt this can check out the extras on the game which prove how the boys did it back in the day).

Jack C. gave it a10:
