With the exclusive video game license of the NFL and its players, and currently in its 17th installment, Madden NFL 07 puts you in control the running game like never before. For the first time ever, step up as the lead blocker to create a hole, and then take control of the tailback and smash through, overpower, or slash away from would-be tacklers as you fight for every yard. Innovative rushing controls give you a game-breaking ground attack featuring all-new jukes, cutbacks, and the distinct running styles of your favorite backs. [Electronic Arts]

To say that the Lead Blocking Control completely revolutionizes Madden is the understatement of the year.

So, the big question will be, then – is it worth picking up this year’s version if you already have 2006? The answer is a definite yes – the new lead blocking controls and the refined superstar mode add a lot to the Madden experience and, as a minor plus, the game seems to run more smoothly.

It sounds like work, but putting blitzing linebackers on their rumps as your halfback flashes by is beyond satisfying.

Despite just slightly tweaking last year’s game, Madden NFL 07 proves to have enough Pro-Bowl caliber features to prove its dominance as the best football and one of the best sports video games around.

The big word this year is 'depth', and with 217 new and classic teams (yes, we counted), tons of new gameplay features and both an in-depth Franchise Mode and an all-new Superstar Mode, there's plenty here to keep fans happy until 08 inevitably rears its helmet-wearing head. [Oct 2006, p.74]

The Lead Blocking adds an all new dimension to the game, the Superstar mode lets you live the life of a NFL player, and the countless number of options and features add up to hours upon hours of enjoyment.

The core gameplay elements of this SKU are down-pat, which makes the extra features such as Superstar mode that much more enjoyable. I can overlook the lack of online leagues or dazzling graphics for a stout basic foundation, which this title certainly has.

Despite the less impressive game modes added to Madden 07, Lead Blocker and the Highlight Stick greatly improves on the ground game. I was more inclined to attempt a 5-yard run than a 20-yard pass!

A few more additions would have made this a spectacular title, but as it stands, Madden 07 is still a great game.

While the remake of the Superstar makes the game extremely unique (in fact, it's probably the biggest change made to Madden in years), there's a significant issue with the influence system, which really governs the whole mode: You can perform your assignments perfectly, but if one of your teammates screws up, you get penalized for it, which doesn't make sense.

Despite the overall fun I had with Superstar mode, it's unfortunate other aspects of the game haven't been fixed. [Oct. 2006, p.92]

Madden ’07 does make an effort at improvements at the running game but everything else seems to be a bit stale. From the graphics to the defense to the lack of Madden himself, it seems like EA is almost playing out the string.

Even though Madden NFL 07 doesn't have any big, game-changing features to make it an especially memorable iteration of the series, its roster of small, but useful changes are ultimately more compelling than anything Madden 06 had on offer last year.

The game, though, hasn't changed much since "06." It's little more than a roster update, ultimately. [Oct 2006, p.84]

EA's challenge is not to simplify their simulation or stop adding detail, but to integrate those features so well that players can simply marvel at how advanced the game has become. The Superstar revisions are a step in the right direction, since they allow players to focus on the entire game one player at a time, but otherwise that's just not the case.

While Madden 07 does have a couple of great changes to its basic gameplay, it's beginning to feel like the same old game. It's a strong fundamental football game and lead blocker is a cool new feature, but it's not reinventing the wheel, like the passing cone was last year.

Its revamped Superstar: Hall of Fame mode is phenomenal and the enhancements to the running game make busting through holes in the defensive line simply a joy. But unlike last year's fiasco with next-gen Madden on the Xbox 360, this year Madden 07 on 360 is clearly the superior version to own.

It's not a huge upgrade over last year's game, with nearly identical franchise modes, and most of the changes being made to one specific aspect of the offense (the running game) and the gimmicky Superstar mode.

C Bass gave it a6:
It could have been great, but fatal flaws with passing in general (especially the play action pass), make this game almost unplayable. Still not even close to the ESPN NFL game that EA forced out of the market.

Blue Falcon gave it an8:
I was surprised with how much the game improved this year. But with that said I was expecting zero improvement and maybe a pooly thought out "feature" or 2 added on. That's not the case though. But, I can't help but feel like ESPN NFL 2K5 plays better, and still has cooler features.

Jim A. gave it a10:
Another great addition to the Madden series. EA makes some minor improvements that pay off. The game continues to get better, more realistic, and more fun every year.

Slingblade gave it a10:
This game should be rated 9.9. It' the best current gen Madden. The critics complain that it didn't improve enough to warrant a high score. But, compared to the 2005 edition, the highest scoring Madden, gameplay is more tight and the game is more fun to watch. For instance, QBs are able to throw on the run whereas in 2005, you'd more often get sacked from the "stop to plant feet" glitch. Also, animation upgrades are so well conceived that the motion is as fluid as real life. Sure, 2K5 had nice strings of animation, but the runners seemed robotic and looked like they were running on platform shoes. Not as if anyone needs a reason to buy this game, but if you're like me and are trying to judge if the good reviews for the 360 warrant upgrading to next-gen, I say wait a year - or at least 'til November for the PS3 to decide. EA Sports, listen to your biggest fans and add a halftime and post-game show, and pre-game intros and you'll have ALL Madden critics so happy they'll be washing your feet.
