Summary

Embark on a journey through a changing world of oddball creatures, off-the-wall action, and outlandish goons in this, the third game in the Oddworld series. Take on the role of Mudokon champion Abe, and his aquatic Gabbit partner Munch, in a fully 3D, fully odd, adventure across Oddworld. Abe and Munch are a pair of lab rats that have taken one prod too many, and now it's up to you to help them turn the tables on the evil Glukkons and their gun-toting lackeys. [Microsoft]

G4 TV

Stunning. "Oddworld" is better than it's ever been, and everything about "Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee" is refined, polished, and utterly playable.

Electronic Gaming Monthly

So wholesomely original, so finely polished, so expertly crafted, that you can’t help but fall in love with it. [Jan 2002, p.227]

A splendid, imaginative romp. [Jan 2002]

The thing that Oddworld does that’s so fascinating to gamers is that it transports you to another world, a totally believable place where you’re more than happy to stay and play for a while.

The game is beautiful and offers plenty of platform gaming excitement that wouldn’t be possible on the PS2 or even the GameCube.

If you liked the previous games you’re going to love Munch’s Oddysee – it’s as simple as that!

Huge lands, lots of moving characters, and plenty of special effects all show off just what the X-box is capable of.

Games Radar UK (Pre-2006)

While solving these puzzles is great fun, the crane work gets a bit repetitive and it's not the seamless platform adventure we'd hoped for.

GameSpy

This is by far the most creative Xbox launch game, but it suffers from repetitiveness and unresponsive controls. Still, it will clearly appeal to platform-game aficionados.

Not too stressful or repetitive, but with a strong plot and graphics that'll satisfy most. Replay value is medium.

Xbox Nation Magazine

Shines like a sequined dress at a Hollywood premiere. Though not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, Oddysee is pretty to look at, and remarkably fun to play. [Jan 2002, p.78]

Total Video Games

A well-polished adventure title that will tax most gamers, whilst it’s luscious visuals, slick presentation and good humour will appeal to most, however it’s slow pace isn’t for everyone.

Yes, it's complicated, but really a deep and fun game once you get into it.

I can't think of any other series which so successfully takes satire and political commentary in such a delightfully twisted and fun way. Oddworld is to bizarre as the Monkey Island series is to humor.

Munch has risen above its storied past to provide a unique, ultimately fulfilling gaming experience. [Jan 2002, p.41]

GamePro

The newest Oddworlds feel rather canned, confined, repetitive, and contrived, and Munch and Abe control more stiffly than most characters put in similar situations.

A very smart game with great puzzles, yet there's not enough variety in those puzzles to keep it completely entertaining throughout.

This game is not going to appeal to the mass gaming public. Sure, it has garnered a good sized following, but this is a genre game if I’ve ever seen one.

This isn't a complete failure per se but it certainly was not the Halo-level of title that Microsoft was looking for.

Voodoo Extreme

While previous Oddworld installments were relatively fast-paced, Munch's Oddysee ends up slowing things down quite a bit...a result of the character-switching mechanic. The repetitive nature of the gameplay will have action fans squirming in their seats, wondering when things are going to pick up.

The graphics are very good and the story is original...I would have expected better. The dialogue and music bring the game down.

IGN

The final product comes off as anything but polished, and suffers from a lack of variety, and an overabundance of repetition that keeps this game from truly shining like I wished it would.

The cartoon-like graphics are very cute — especially the pre-rendered cut-scene sequences — and the game play is challenging, though it might be a tad repetitive after a while.

Armchair Empire

It lacks the certain fun factor that elevates a game to "must own" status instead of sitting at "rent a few times." Some of this is owed to the basic design of the game.

[Anonymous] gave it a10:
I enjoyed this game even more than Abe's oddysee and Exoddus. The game is short, but surprisingly pleasing.

Sue Y. gave it a9:
I played the game all the way through without a strategy guide, had a blast! I still think of it to this day, it was like a vacation on another planet, a funny jumping planet. I hope i can play it again in a few years, relive the magic.

GreenDayroxandiamsuchagamefreak gave it a10:
This game is the best freakin game ever graphics, gameplay, and puzzles rock a#@!

Hunter H. gave it a 6:
It is an okay game, but far (almost nothing) from what it could and should have been. The puzzles are way too easy if not repetitive and require quick reflexs rather than actual thinking. It would probably be found entertaining to young gamers due to the lack of some type of seriousness and difficulty. To understand the plot you had better have played the other previous games and looked on the internet. The only thing this game has going for it really is that it is 3D and good graphics.

Nalle K. gave it an 8:
Great graphics, cool sounds, and lovely puzzles! -but isnt 'oddworld bigger than this!?

Chuck F. gave it a 10:
All time great game, just one more reason to buy an xbox.

Lance F. gave it a 9:
Short but very pleasing for a launch game.
