Hot Games
The game play appeals to the young and hopelessly naïve gamers who think they're reliving the movie experience. Good luck to them - to the rest of us, spend your X-bucks on something a little more sophisticated.

This title is a good pick for players ages 13 to 17 (especially those who liked the film), though older players might grow tired of the gags after a while.

If you can look past the smelly parts, Shrek is worth farting around with. [Feb 2002, p.59]
Xbox Nation Magazine
The sheer number and monotony of the challenges, however, gets boring at times. [Jan 2002, p.88]
IGN
Visually, Shrek is a great example of what the system can do...The structure of the game quickly becomes repetitive, and more importantly, the individual goals of the game just aren't fun.

It's really a shame, because Shrek is exactly the sort of movie that could be made into some highly entertaining platform games.

Shrek's gameplay is sub-par. [Jan 2002]
GameSpot
Amazing visuals have come at a price--as a gameplay experience, Shrek is pretty unsubstantial. Only the youngest of players will find its gameplay compelling in the least, and even they, by now, have become accustomed to something more.

The problem here is that the levels are either two small, or laid out in ways that are counter-intuitive. There's also the problem of challenge.

Shrek himself is a visual marvel. The thing is, once youve taken your jaw off the floor, youre stuck with a dull and frustrating game thats too difficult for younger players and not engaging enough to hook older gamers.

The excitement is just too short-lived and even the biggest fans of the movie are more than likely to be disappointed.

Sure the graphics are fabulous, but the gameplay, sound effects, replay value, level design, and camera system are so poor that few people will find this game fun.

Repetitive action and sloppy control in lieu of an enthralling adventure.

It misses on all counts beyond the purely visual - it's not similar enough to the movie to attract Shrek fans, it's not playable enough to attract platform game aficionados, and it's too difficult for the kids to enjoy once they've stopped laughing at the fart jokes.

The fact is, just about every task the game asks you to play is simply no fun. [Jan 2002, p.230]
Game Revolution
There's nothing like trying to make the same jump over and over for ten minutes solid to make you give up in frustration and try to do a different "good deed" instead.

A fantastic graphical showcase for the Xbox hardware, but once past that, adult and child gamers alike will have a hard time finding anything to keep their interest in this adventure.

Simply put, this game sucks. [Jan 2002, p.42]
Game Informer
Shrek can burp and light his farts! Well, so can my old college roommates and I don't see you paying 50 bucks to hand out with them. [Jan 2002, p.86]
